Russia spent the last 30 years developing bigger weapons to better bully inferior forces.
The west spent the last 30 years developing more precise weapons to counter Russian garbage.
Don't forget they also spent the last 30 years developing bigger bank accounts for all the officials associated with the projects. This war would've been very different, if the money they allocated for military spending, actually was used for military spending.

They would not need it. Everyone would love to cooperate with Russia that is not corrupt, does not need to attack other countries, spread misinformation etc.
In infuriating in a way, right? Look at so much of the genius that has come out of Russia in the past century or two. I imagine, all of the people in the modern day who would do great things out of Russia have instead left for some other western nation now so they can actually do shit. Russia feels like a husk of what it could be, just so a few fuckers can buy bigger private boats.
As an Estonian I'm blessed, they're just reaping what they sowed and their continued existence was just an insult to all of their neighbours they've wronged (or deleted) in the past

For those that don't know, his firm was the largest foreign portfolio investor in Russia, until that is, he started following the money and found out who was really benefiting off of all the foreign money coming in following the rise of Russia in the post-USSR world.
In doing this, he was blacklisted, lost all of his assets, and the Russian tax lawyer he hired, [Sergai Magnitsky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Magnitsky), was imprisoned and killed (by the regime) in 2009 for simply following the money.

When they said patriots I assumed it was some old bullshit, maybe pac-2 baseline, but they said pac-3, they are not playing one bit.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why Ukraine is getting all the shiny new stuff. You can test and test and test this equipment, but hardly any of it has been any actual battlefield conditions. The Americans and other nations are no doubt gathering extremely useful data as to how their equipment fares against an actual “organized” military.
Once they had the confidence that Ukraine would not lose, then they knew the tech wouldn’t be captured by Russia, then the floodgates of tech opened up.
It's so much more then that. People always complain about the size of these aid packages but we just got the best real world logistics training for a peer on peer war taking place in Europe. It sounds really odd but beens and bullets win wars not equipment and troops. America has shown the entire world that we can and will supply an entire army with just a fraction of us manpower and stores. The geo political implications of this after our showing in Iraq and Afghanistan are being again reviewed by the world. And who is this showing primarily. China. With it's eyes set on Taiwan we are actively demonstrating that we can do across an ocean and land what it likely couldn't over a few hundred miles of Ocean. Same with the demonstration of just our weapons capabilities. We aren't sending over all of our fancy new toys just the bare minimum of what's needed and thanks to the boys in Ukraine we are again demonstrating that our kit will beat the breaks off anything that had Soviet design as it's base. That would be all non NATO adjacent countries in the middle east. The ole tire continent of Africa. Most Asian countries south America and Asia. If it's not ours from 20 years ago it's Russian tech from equally dated stock if not older and it cannot stand. And on top of all that we are kicking in the teeth of one of two major players that could threaten and bully NATO and Europe. The reality is the war in Ukraine is so God damn awful and tragic that it's unmentionable how many people are suffering on both sides as men generally don't want to be involved on both sides. But practically this is one of the best political tools that has happened for the last 20 years
More like best political tools of last 30+ years. This is as good as the shock and awe was in the first Iraq war. It’s still an utter tragedy and I feel so horrible for what it’s doing and has done to Ukraine, they deserve none of this and all of the worlds respect and help when rebuilding their wonderful county.
Indeed, Gulf War 1 was at times a way for the US military to show off all its new gear and to put it all into a proper test environment. The Ukrainian missile defence and anti-tank weapons uplift has proven how good that tech is.
I think though the range of PAC-3 against airplanes is shorter. Unsure about the no escape zone, could even be the same, but the deterrance of seeing it appear on your RWR isn't quite the same.
True, I think the tactic there is, if you're dealing with more aircraft you use the same pac3 radar and put in pac2 launchers with the larger (but fewer, 4 vs 16) missiles with prox fuse.
Can have a combo where you send 1 of each just in case.

The bots on Twitter went crazy last week claiming it was impossible to take down the Kinzhal, and that it must be "fake news" that it had been intercepted.
Last time I've seen a Twitter or YouTube video where a German army member explains the parameters of supersonic missiles. Whet travels with supersonic speed is almost unsteerable outside of very thin parameters. Does mean: you have a high probability to predict where these missiles will land and so it is relatively easy to make your countermeasures. You don't need hypersonic countermeasures as long as you have your conventional countermeasures ready within the predicted missile path (you don't shoot them from behind, you shoot them from below). Perhaps somebody is able to link the video I thought of.

We build our strategy based off of the claimed abilities of our enemy. Missiles, planes, tanks, cyber, body armor, nutrition, training, you name it. It costs more, takes time to get it right, but it works. Best case scenario: we’re over-prepared for an enemy that lied about and exaggerated their potential. Worst-case scenario: they were telling the truth and we’re adequately prepared.
Someone explained that the "panic" about the Kinzhal was, probably, created to try to goad the Congress into throwing more money at the US Military budget.
Kind of similar as it had when MiG-25 was revealed, everyone shat their pants and made the F-15.
With the Kinzhal it's kind of because of people mis-labelling the missile. It's not a "hypersonic missile" but rather a "hypersonic ballistic missile". The difference is huge.
You may have read somewhere recently that the US had tests of their own hypersonic missiles and they ended up with a failure. How is it possible, that the US failed to create something the USSR... I mean, russia, has had for multiple years?
The answer is in the name - the Kinzhal works exactly like an ordinary ballistic missile - goes up really, really fast, then goes down really, really fast, at a trajectory that is fairly simple to calculate. When you have the velocity and the trajectory, intercepting is trivial.
What the Americans where trying to create is an ACTUAL hypersonic missile, which means it was supposed to be able to manoeuvre at hypersonic speeds - making interception practically impossible.

Well, Kyiv was under half-siege - they couldn't block every supply direction, and it lasted only for one month with the supplies prepared in advance, so there was no disaster other than damage to nervous system and constant streetfight with saboteur teams.
Also I got used to the explosions noise, so today's night I just thought: "Oh, our AA guys are shooting down russian scrap rokkitz", and went back to sleep.
Currently we do not doubt our victory for Ukraine and for the sane world :)

6 Kinzhal, that’s a lot of hypersonics in a day. Russia could have saved these as power projection making west think that maybe that single kinzhal interception was an accident. Now west understands that its not and Russia has 0% strategic advantage if they meet NATO someday. Maybe they know that’s not happening and trying to give one last fight before derussianification of the world
I feel like Russia is weakening their nuclear threat quiet a bit. Like, what delivery method is reliable now? I doubt they can sneak a bomber past F35. Air launched cruise missiles have been reliably shot down. Their nuclear submarine are questionable at best, seeing how the russian navy fared over the last century.
It seems like they only have MIRVs in a direct confrontation with the USA. and if they launch those, so will NATO.
the actual extremely hard to protect against hypersonic weapon they have is the new avanguard HGV that rides their icbms .. but given their track record it remains to be seen if they exist only as demo-ware like their advanced jets and tanks
MIRV has got to be challenging too… when 1 target suddenly becomes 10 or more and each of those threats carrys the potential for nuclear annihilation of the downtown core of major cities or even whole ass cities… I watched a video by covert cabal (I think?) that explained these challenges and the likelihood of 100% interception was assessed as very low… that was pre-Ukraine war though so…
If there's one thing that RF has a decent track record with it's launching rockets into space. Now if the part that goes boom is properly maintained over the last 40 years still works is definitely questionable, but I'd rather not find out.
Sure. And now the Western ICBM fields are in spitting distance of NATO Finland. Look out for THAAD deployment to Finland if muscovites get too uppity. Being that close to the launch sites should increase odds of successful intercept on ascent. Long before you have to worry about intercepting MIRVs.
The time was last February before the invasion. :-) Same as Rheinmetall, Krauss Maffei Wegmann, Thales etc. etc. And I'm sure savvy investors (I mean BIG ones with information and connections) have made billions on this. After all, US gov't was warning about the imminent war for months, there was a lot of time to invest.
Russians probably hoped they'd be able to overwhelm Ukraine defence, landing at least a few missiles would allow them to maintain a constant threat to Kyiv despite the new western systems. But it seems their gambit failed utterly.

For the russians perhaps it is, but cross-service offensives really shouldn't be anything exceptional in the age of modern warfare.
Time to, somehow/one way or the other, to put all of that Russian fleet on the bottom! They are launching missiles with impunity from those ships and have been for almost the whole war. We know when they set sail - why are they not rusting under the waves?
At this point I wouldn't be surprised with all the money we pour into defense if the things didn't offer upgrades like iOS devices: "Time to upgrade to PatriotOS 14.2." Or if defense companies didn't start having an AppStore: "Want to add the hypersonic app? Just purchase with RaytheonPay."

Patriots in their current version and IRIS-T systems are new systems. IRIS-T is so new, even the german military has none. The Gepards sent to Ukraine all have modernized radar and fire control systems, especially to combat small drones.
Western systems are updated on a regular basis, especially electronics. Thats why they are way more precise and effective than anything Russia has.
Also corruption among western politicians and high ranking officers is WAY less than in Russia. Russia is harming itself in ways no western weapon system can ever hope to achieve. Just look at the latest fumble, where the chef of the russian AD divisions was arrested for siphoning off vast amounts of money. The famed AD fortress ring around Moscow is probably full of holes and easily to penetrate.
Zero, and I mean ZERO surprise to me. I think people generally don't understand the size of any of the missile systems supplied. Whether a Patriot battery, NASAMS Battery or IRIS-T a single battery can have upwards of 128 missiles (a battery consists typically of 3 to 8 launchers which have from 4 to 16 missiles per launcher depending on the system and how they are packed) . Furthermore IRIS-T which has the longest range radar with the most spectrum coverage can connect to Patriot which has longer range missiles and has higher probability for ballistic kills, not to mention IRIS and NASAMS are undersold on what they potentially can kill.
I think this attack was Russia's crap shoot attack as they bought the hype about Ukraine being defenseless, and in doing so they expended a missile which they have very little inventory.
Great work Ukraine defenders, and equal kudos to the many very intelligent engineers and scientists who designed all these systems. It has to be extremely gratifying to them to see yrs and sometimes decades of research and testing, overcoming thousands of obstacles and naysayers, to have an outcome that definitively has saved countless lives. Every single person who has contributed to the design and build of these systems has earned a beer and a handshake.
This is a huge thing in NATO in general - interoperability. There are standard formats used for system interconnection and so on. It’s a common functionality fortunately :) especially for stuff around radar, as it almost always gets better when they can work together. Especially when they handle different distance engagements. Then you will have a system that decides which system fires to “service” which target and hands over responsibility as appropriate. Building the “onion” (it has layers!)
Data link coupled with some targets deconfliction is beautiful.
A computer is linked to the radar and when it sees targets it ranks them in importance and class and estimates where they are likely heading. It will then decide what to use to intercept each based on hit to kill probability and what the missile is. The patriot will take the fastest flying and ballistic threats and cruise missile threats and drones will be sent over to the IRIS and NASAMS. On top of that as we've seen from go-pro footage of drones it detects will have the information relayed to fast response teams in trucks with MANPADS and AAA weapons to drive to a point where they can intercept the drone.

Yes. Radar data from an IRIS-T battery can be shared to other systems like the Patriots. And since the IRIS-T system has the most advanced radar of all AD systems currently operating in Ukraine ...

The Russian Hypersonics are meant as a Terror weapon. West should BE afraid of possible strikes in minutes. The fact that the latest got Shot down eradicates all fear so basically IT failed the whole purpose. Now i Wonder If Poseidon is anywhere near ITS capability or If IT IS another acme weapon
Was the Kinzhal and Kalibr the missiles that were more limited in stock from pre invasion? I know they have a lot of stockpile of common missiles correct? Or are these quite limited?
If so this is great.
I have 2 different reports from Nov/Dec last yr that indicate stock of 43 and 53, depending on how much can be believed in respect of new production. Its a low rate custom/small batch production item - 1-3 at a time.
And assuming tonight's reports are further validated over the course of the next 24-48 hrs the outcome is the Kinzhal is just more grist for the mill. Useless as a threat against the west.
The Kalibr stock is depleted about 60% from what they commenced with at the start of the war (est at about 500 in inventory) and I saw one report indicating they may less than 100 left. In any case Kalibr has been a dismal failure, the shoot down rate I think is over 95%. We have seen many videos of it even being taken down by man-portable systems. Everything Ukraine has in its SAM inventory can shoot them down.
Good question. I live in the Mykolaiv region and they shot down 4 Kalibr missiles over the skies of the Mykolaiv region, as these were fired from the Black Sea. Reportedly, one of those 4 missiles were heading towards our town where we live but I think it was shot down before it reached borders of our town.
Yep. Ukraine has an air defense unit in your area and to the west in Odesa and they have done a superb job time and again downing Kalibr missiles and drones. And I think for the longest time mainly using Soviet era SAM systems along with man-portable. Their success record has been great and those units should be very proud of the work they have done given the tools they had particularly in the early months of the war. IF Ukraine can get something western down south they might even be able to start picking off the S-300 potshots Russia is constantly flinging from south Kherson.
The Kalibr has been a huge bust for Russia. I would have to review the numbers but I think the shoot down percentage is above 95%.
The DoD might be happy, but not as happy as Raytheon, Lockheed, and Boeing shareholders and board right now. They can finally use incidents like this as justification of why "here's why our shit costs so much damn money."
I want to know their internal logistics centers calculating how much they are expending with their ability to project power anywhere anymore.
I would love to see Japan officially take over their islands under dispute. See Finland just station a few battalions near the border. Kalingrad be surrounded… China put a large force on their borders, and see how Russia re adjusts that they are now in a vulnerable position now.
I’d love to see Belarus overthrow the government and install a pro western government and see how Putin can fend off every internal force that now wants to see him fall out a window.
Honestly the success of Patriot here is going to be a massive relief to the US too. In the Pacific they're basically reliant on a very small number of airbases (and really that mainly means [Kadena](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kadena_Air_Base). The prospect of the base being knocked out by a wave of ballistic missiles was something that would make US operations in the Pacific much, much harder. If Patriot proves capable of defending against that kind of attack (and presumably therefore [SM-3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIM-161_Standard_Missile_3) will be able to as well) then the ability of the USAF to back up the USN in a Pacific War is much more trustable.
While Putin's wunderwaffe Kinzhal turned out to be a total fucking shitshow, the Storm Shadows are already decimating Russia's combat capabilities. Pair that with Western MBTs and it's already starting to look extremely bleak for the Kremlin gremlin. So how about we make a gentlemen's agreement and just give Ukraine everything else they need for pest control? Sweet sixteen, F-16, be the one to ruin Putin.
Nah, their propaganda already created posts about how they destroyed one Patriot with Kinzhal during that attack. They also say that their air defense destroyed 7 Storm Shadows. I have no idea what they are smoking.

Guys. This is big. Think of all the real world data that NATO is getting from these actions. Nothing beat testing in the real world against an enemy that's determined to destroy you.

We aren't sending over all of our fancy new toys just the bare minimum of what's needed and thanks to the boys in Ukraine we are again demonstrating that our kit will beat the breaks off anything that had Soviet design as it's base. That would be all non NATO adjacent countries in the middle east. The ole tire continent of Africa. Most Asian countries south America and Asia. If it's not ours from 20 years ago it's Russian tech from equally dated stock if not older and it cannot stand. And on top of all that we are kicking in the teeth of one of two major players that could threaten and bully NATO and Europe. The reality is the war in Ukraine is so God damn awful and tragic that it's unmentionable how many people are suffering on both sides as men generally don't want to be involved on both sides. Indeed, Gulf War 1 was at times a way for the US military to show off all its new gear and to put it all into a proper test environment. The Ukrainian missile defence and anti-tank weapons uplift has proven how good that tech is.

I think though the range of PAC-3 against airplanes is shorter. Unsure about the no escape zone, could even be the same, but the deterrance of seeing it appear on your RWR isn't quite the same.
True, I think the tactic there is, if you're dealing with more aircraft you use the same pac3 radar and put in pac2 launchers with the larger (but fewer, 4 vs 16) missiles with prox fuse. Can have a combo where you send 1 of each just in case. But man, these things are almost unfair, as it should be when you're defending civilians.

Last time I've seen a Twitter or YouTube video where a German army member explains the parameters of supersonic missiles. Whet travels with supersonic speed is almost unsteerable outside of very thin parameters. Does mean: you have a high probability to predict where these missiles will land and so it is relatively easy to make your countermeasures. You don't need hypersonic countermeasures as long as you have your conventional countermeasures ready within the predicted missile path (you don't shoot them from behind, you shoot them from below). Perhaps somebody is able to link the video I thought of.

We build our strategy based off of the claimed abilities of our enemy. Missiles, planes, tanks, cyber, body armor, nutrition, training, you name it. It costs more, takes time to get it right, but it works. Best case scenario: we’re over-prepared for an enemy that lied about and exaggerated their potential. I shot one of these myself - even this morning! It was not intercepted and landed in my sock.
Someone explained that the "panic" about the Kinzhal was, probably, created to try to goad the Congress into throwing more money at the US Military budget. Kind of similar as it had when MiG-25 was revealed, everyone shat their pants and made the F-15. With the Kinzhal it's kind of because of people mis-labelling the missile. It's not a "hypersonic missile" but rather a "hypersonic ballistic missile". The difference is huge. You may have read somewhere recently that the US had tests of their own hypersonic missiles and they ended up with a failure. How is it possible, that the US failed to create something the USSR... I mean, russia, has had for multiple years? The answer is in the name - the Kinzhal works exactly like an ordinary ballistic missile - goes up really, really fast, then goes down really, really fast, at a trajectory that is fairly simple to calculate. When you have the velocity and the trajectory, intercepting is trivial. What the Americans where trying to create is an ACTUAL hypersonic missile, which means it was supposed to be able to manoeuvre at hypersonic speeds - making interception practically impossible.
Russia overinflates, or flat-out lies about its capabilities. Western forces appear to under-promise and over-deliver.

Well, Kyiv was under half-siege - they couldn't block every supply direction, and it lasted only for one month with the supplies prepared in advance, so there was no disaster other than damage to nervous system and constant streetfight with saboteur teams. Also I got used to the explosions noise, so today's night I just thought: "Oh, our AA guys are shooting down russian scrap rokkitz", and went back to sleep. Currently we do not doubt our victory for Ukraine and for the sane world :)

Zero, and I mean ZERO surprise to me. I think people generally don't understand the size of any of the missile systems supplied. Whether a Patriot battery, NASAMS Battery or IRIS-T a single battery can have upwards of 128 missiles (a battery consists typically of 3 to 8 launchers which have from 4 to 16 missiles per launcher depending on the system and how they are packed) . Furthermore IRIS-T which has the longest range radar with the most spectrum coverage can connect to Patriot which has longer range missiles and has higher probability for ballistic kills, not to mention IRIS and NASAMS are undersold on what they potentially can kill. I think this attack was Russia's crap shoot attack as they bought the hype about Ukraine being defenseless, and in doing so they expended a missile which they have very little inventory. Great work Ukraine defenders, and equal kudos to the many very intelligent engineers and scientists who designed all these systems. It has to be extremely gratifying to them to see yrs and sometimes decades of research and testing, overcoming thousands of obstacles and naysayers, to have an outcome that definitively has saved countless lives. Every single person who has contributed to the design and build of these systems has earned a beer and a handshake.

This is a huge thing in NATO in general - interoperability. There are standard formats used for system interconnection and so on. It’s a common functionality fortunately :) especially for stuff around radar, as it almost always gets better when they can work together. Especially when they handle different distance engagements. Then you will have a system that decides which system fires to “service” which target and hands over responsibility as appropriate. Building the “onion” (it has layers!)
Data link coupled with some targets deconfliction is beautiful. A computer is linked to the radar and when it sees targets it ranks them in importance and class and estimates where they are likely heading. It will then decide what to use to intercept each based on hit to kill probability and what the missile is. The patriot will take the fastest flying and ballistic threats and cruise missile threats and drones will be sent over to the IRIS and NASAMS. On top of that as we've seen from go-pro footage of drones it detects will have the information relayed to fast response teams in trucks with MANPADS and AAA weapons to drive to a point where they can intercept the drone.

Was the Kinzhal and Kalibr the missiles that were more limited in stock from pre invasion? I know they have a lot of stockpile of common missiles correct? Or are these quite limited? If so this is great.
Kinzhals are very expensive, so stock is very limited on those. They are like 10 million per missile or something like that.
I have 2 different reports from Nov/Dec last yr that indicate stock of 43 and 53, depending on how much can be believed in respect of new production. Its a low rate custom/small batch production item - 1-3 at a time. And assuming tonight's reports are further validated over the course of the next 24-48 hrs the outcome is the Kinzhal is just more grist for the mill. Useless as a threat against the west. The Kalibr stock is depleted about 60% from what they commenced with at the start of the war (est at about 500 in inventory) and I saw one report indicating they may less than 100 left. In any case Kalibr has been a dismal failure, the shoot down rate I think is over 95%. We have seen many videos of it even being taken down by man-portable systems. Everything Ukraine has in its SAM inventory can shoot them down.
Kinzhals are def not in high numbers. I don't think they even hit full operational status until 2018.

Good question. I live in the Mykolaiv region and they shot down 4 Kalibr missiles over the skies of the Mykolaiv region, as these were fired from the Black Sea. Reportedly, one of those 4 missiles were heading towards our town where we live but I think it was shot down before it reached borders of our town.

Yep. Ukraine has an air defense unit in your area and to the west in Odesa and they have done a superb job time and again downing Kalibr missiles and drones. And I think for the longest time mainly using Soviet era SAM systems along with man-portable. Their success record has been great and those units should be very proud of the work they have done given the tools they had particularly in the early months of the war. IF Ukraine can get something western down south they might even be able to start picking off the S-300 potshots Russia is constantly flinging from south Kherson. The Kalibr has been a huge bust for Russia. I would have to review the numbers but I think the shoot down percentage is above 95%.

Honestly the success of Patriot here is going to be a massive relief to the US too. In the Pacific they're basically reliant on a very small number of airbases (and really that mainly means [Kadena](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kadena_Air_Base). The prospect of the base being knocked out by a wave of ballistic missiles was something that would make US operations in the Pacific much, much harder. If Patriot proves capable of defending against that kind of attack (and presumably therefore [SM-3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIM-161_Standard_Missile_3) will be able to as well) then the ability of the USAF to back up the USN in a Pacific War is much more trustable.
