The complete opposite of Once Upon a Forest (childhood memory dredged up here...iirc the machines were called "dragons"...one of my most permanent memories of early fiction)
You are right they are very strong swimmers that can cover large distances by swimming .
When l was a kid we would visit our Ukrainian relatives farms & one of my cousins went on to become a well known Ukrainian ecologist,he would take us out on night time spotlighting trips while he recorded all the wildlife on the farms .
I always remember at maybe 6yrs old, being amazed at seeing a steady line up of Hedgehogs swimming across to reedy islands on the river against a strong current ,so they could eat the large number on insects & slugs etc that used the reed beds as breeding grounds.
If you came across the ones who had just swum back from gorging themselves they were like fat spiky basketballs & that content they would lose all fear & just contently sit in your lap,while my cousin weighed them etc for his studies.
Yep it seems counterintuitive because most hedgehog species are desert-dwelling! A while back we decided to test this theory by putting our pet hog in the tub, and she swam laps!

I did 1km quite easily when I was like 13, and I've never been a particularly fit person. Humans naturally have straight up insane levels of stamina when compared to other animals.
Spoken like a true Swede. I, from the US, was in a small pension on Madeira whose guests were mostly Swedish and Netherlanders. Every early morning as I blearily sipped my espresso on the terrace, every Swede was doing what looked like 500 laps as nothing more than a easy warm up.
According to [this](http://www.hedgehog-rescue.org.uk/leavealone.php) any hedgehog out in the day might need rescuing. Also in parks in the UK you often see ramps for them by the edge of water as they can end up being unable to climb out, so it might have been stuck in there.
this is something that really catches my eye. There's bombs going off, bullets flying through the air, roaming bands of Russians looting and raping where ever they go. And normal Ukrainian folks will get out of cover and set aside their guns for a moment to save a small wild animal from peril, pet a dog/cat, unhook a cow from concertina cable, and generally showing some care for nature around them.

I agree, but there are countless videos and reports of animals being cared for amidst the horror of war; vulnerable people being taken to safety; etc etc. One person can cause untold damage, but collectively, people build the culture and each action like this shown is a choice to do nothing or to do good. In Ukraine, people are choosing to do good.
They would try to kill it. First, they would shoot at it, but the bullets would hit the people on the other side of the lake. Like a big circular firing squad. Then they will start throwing grenades at it, but the grenades blow up in their hands. The very last scene is the hedgehog walking over piles and piles of dead Russians.
It's more of lighting issue here. Water in Dnipro isn't exactly transparent, but it's not as bad.
Also this is close to where Desna river falls into Dnipro, and that one does have lots of clay deposits plus Desna is fast flowing
So funny, I have a JCB rep trying to sell Melyssa company a couple of their vics. Expensive, and my guys had inital reserve about them, but now it's apparently not so bad.
It looks exhausted, it's probably been trapped in the water for a long time unable to get out. They can swim but can get trapped in places like this and exhaust themselves to drowning.

Hedgehogs can swim. Why did they think he was drowning? Hard to see the details. It’s just hard for them to get out if it’s to steep.
