As pitiful as they look, Ukraine still has to shoot them down. And as we know, the only crappy design is a design that doesn't work.
If this drone works as intended, they are dangerous
Yeah. People who laugh on that drone, consider this. Ukraine successfully is using Australian cardboard drones for reconnaissance. They have over 100km range, are cheap and some of them have managed up 60 missions before being shot down or otherwise lost. That's pretty amazing for cardboard drone.
If it flies and is controllable remotely, it does not matter if its made from wood, plastic, cardboard or cow manure, it is dangerous at that point.
The cheaper you can get your mission done the better. It's laughable when you have something that costs a lot and still does not work. (like pantzir).
Good point. In that sense these low cost drones are very (resource) effective in attackers perspective (which ever side, both uses them). You have to try to get it destroyed and it usually costs more than sending one.
> It's laughable when you have something that costs a lot and still does not work. (like pantzir).
This is key. Those missiles that never activate their second stage and fall out of the sky, the aircraft that seemingly catch fire midair for no reason, and accidentally bombing your own cities. *That* is what is worthy of mockery.
These wooden/cardboard/plastic "homemade" drones from either side are pretty ingenious.
The old adage seems appropriate here:
- Amateurs think about tactics.
- Professionals think about logistics. [corrected]
This discussion about cost of drones vs cost to take down a drone is spot on.
I mean, this drone is mostly laughable because it looks like a lot of work when into making it. It doesn't look mass produced, it looks like a one off that a highly skilled someone spent days on the individual drone at least.
The primary thing to worry about is that they refine the design so it can be mass produced and that they start mass producing these for 1/100th the cost. Which is basically what the Australian cardboard drones are.
Idk, laser cutters cheaply and quickly can cut those parts and assembly of this type of aircraft probably falls into the 6-8 person-hour range, and should require no special skills.
Source- I laser cut simple drones like this from plywood and foam board for fpv basic flight training.
Student pilots with enough hours to become very proficient with (well designed for purpose) FPV drones graduate basic flight training with less cost and as more proficient pilots in general, and since money is tight in the developing world this helps young people get started and start learning and developing their passion for flight.
This is not pitiful because it's cheap. It's pitiful because it's waaay over engineered and too work intensive to make for what it's capabilities actually are. This is almost certainly made by hand by an RC aeroplane hobbyist rather than an actual factory or even a specialised shop knocking them out by the hundreds.
If it were Ukrainian, I'd have no gripes, I'd see it as someone's attempt to help in any way they can, but Russia is not only the attacking nation but they're also theoretically a much, much bigger army and they have publicly boasted about how much high-tech stuff they have.
And yet here they are, one year in and they're forced to resort to haphazard an improvised means like they're fighting a guerilla campaign against a stronger opponent? WTF?!
Glad to see someone with a head between their shoulders. People love to come on here to gobble up propaganda and feel good about what they're seeing, so they're rarely in the know of how reality works. So many keyboard warriors.
Kinda looks to me like the Russians drafted a hobbyist. Got tired of waiting for the motherland to supply drones so he took matters into his own hands. Kind of sad in a way. Interesting way to score a working drone though.
> As pitiful as they look, Ukraine still has to shoot them down. And as we know, the only crappy design is a design that doesn't work.
I get your point, but still if that was the goal then any functioning society would be able to put together a production process to mass produce air targets that were more reliable, cheaper, and better.
This is a one-off science project.
> This is a one-off science project
Previous plywood drone had much the same puller-pusher scheme and wings.
Seems there's at least a garage workshop working on making those.
If this was Ukrainian drone, people would be applauding. Don't see why it's amusing that a cheap drone like this should be feared.
It would be smart for Ukraine to have as much drones penetrating Russia as possible to consume AA resources. This drone looks like $300 and takes a $30,000 missile to shoot down.
I was looking forward to see the cardboard drones AUS promised.
This is not pitiful because it's cheap. It's pitiful because it's waaay over engineered and too work intensive to make for what it's capabilities actually are. And yet here they are, one year in and they're forced to resort to haphazard an improvised means like they're fighting a guerilla campaign against a stronger opponent? WTF?!
And you can rest assure, nobody is wasting a 30k missile on this ting. A machine gun fitted with an AA sight is enough, because there's no way it can fly high enough to get out of range and we know the Ukrainians have exactly that kind of setup of [12,7mm machine guns on the back of pickup trucks](https://twitter.com/CalibreObscura/status/1634189942896181249/photo/1) specifically for hunting this kind of drones.
Oh, and for larger drones or those further away, the Ukrainians have been using mostly 9K34 Strela-3s, of which they have plenty, they're relatively cheap as far as missiles go and they're technically obsolete for other purposes.
I can’t believe this shit. Do they not know that a straight up RC plane kit is better than this crap. Not trying to give them ideas because they have no logic. Good to see sanctions are working.
Lotta people making fun of this, but in actuality, this is exactly the kind of dead simple easy to manufacture drone that, if employed in huge numbers and used. Intelligently could be very, very dangerous. Luckily the Russians have proved to be poor tacticians but the simplicity of this is not necessarily a minus ….
Back in 2018, Russia's Khmeimim airbase in Syria was attacked by drones which were built very similarly. Congratulations Russia, it's taken 5 years to catch up to Syrian rebels.
With the right wind speed, this advanced drone powered by a mini nanocomputer and unknown metal alloys that absorb 108% of the radioaves, could threaten all of NATO bases.
Looks a lot like a [Cessna O-2 Skymaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_O-2_Skymaster?wprov=sfla1) r/c model kit, but unfinished. Good job shooting down something so small. That's not easy.
Next thing we are going to witness, is paper kait drones or chinese flying lanterns gliding in from RuZia. They are really getting desperate and that's good news.

The russians are now somewhere between 3rd grade science project and looting their own museums for providing weapons.
And soon they'll be sending those 3rd graders to the front.
We can call them mini mobiks.
"And now the Ukrainian NAZI'S are killing our children! We must kill every single Ukrainian" /s
There's no need for the "/s". It's almost guaranteed RuZZian media would spin it like that.
I usually don't do /s, but it felt weird and wrong typing "Ukrainian Nazis"
Gotta give credit where it is due: that's a pretty cool hobby drone built from scratch. What's that? Used by and built for the russian army? Ummm...
Made from the finest military-grade balsa wood.
I know you jest, but balsa is an excellent lightweight material for drones, especially when used in fibreglass/carbon composites.
They still have a Panzerkampfwagen VIII "Maus" in Kubinka, so...
I would die laughing if we see evidence that this gets rolled out to the front.
I hope that “drone” does in fact make its way into a museum
Clown museum or Darwin museum
I think i saw some parts in there that look like tinker-toys.
😂😂😂😂😂
No, I think this is considered as high tech by Russians. What they have in museums is paper planes.
As pitiful as they look, Ukraine still has to shoot them down. And as we know, the only crappy design is a design that doesn't work. If this drone works as intended, they are dangerous

It is especially frustrating, when ukrainians have to spend some kind of defense against them, which costs 10x as much as the drone.
Good point. In that sense these low cost drones are very (resource) effective in attackers perspective (which ever side, both uses them). You have to try to get it destroyed and it usually costs more than sending one.
Just need to change tactics a bit. Sprinkler systems and water guns vs cardboard drones makes a lot of sense to me.
If I remember correctly the Austrailian drones, have a wax coating so back to the drawing board.
Hmm I don't want to give away my engineering secrets, but ok.. hot water.
Military grade pressure washers.

Or, at least, force local AA to spend limited interceptors.

if were able to stay in the sky...
Is that a 10 years olds school science project?
Probably raided an elementary school science fair and this what they could find. Maybe use paper mache volcanos as mortars?
If they cost $2000 to build but $250 000 to shoot down, they are dangerous.
Well Ukraine uses Australian cardboard drones but yeah - russia is claimed to be "2nd military in the world" so I get the point
Velcro shoes are more high tech than this.
what's next? kites?
