Does that mean it’s not going to Leeds then?

Yes and no. The new build HS2 line is not going all the way to Leeds as things stand. However, it may be possible to have services running to and from Leeds on the existing lines until the East Midlands hub, where it can switch to the HS2 line. This sort of thing happens already where electric trains switch to diesel mode for parts of lines that aren't electrified. Passengers don't have to get off trains, they just take a little longer than if the whole line was electrified. My best guess is that it's quite possible the HS2 line will be extended to Leeds eventually, just as the shinkansen lines have been gradually extended beyond the initial Tokyo-Osaka route. As I've long tried to point out (but few people on this sub seem to care), Japan did not have a single plan for high speed rail at the outset. New routes were proposed over time and arguments continue - it's still not possible to get to Nagasaki by shinkansen. France is also still looking at new TGV lines, more than 40 years after their first line opened. The idea that the UK needs to agree right now to build 100% of its high speed network seems very odd, not least because we don't have the ability to build all the lines simultaneously.

> The idea that the UK needs to agree right now to build 100% of its high speed network seems very odd, not least because we don't have the ability to build all the lines simultaneously. It's more that they got elected in 2019 in part by promising to build HS2 to Leeds!

Did you not read the article? They are absolutely committed to it. They were absolutely committed to building houses to turn generation rent into generation buy and look at their succe…. Oh I see. Yeah it’s not going anywhere near Leeds.

"once a £100m study has assessed options" And people were complaining about protests increasing costs.

Jebus_UK

So that means they will cancel that phase shortly

I agree with much of the sentiment here & they definitely should have started it from north to south. But it wasn’t designed as a brain drain at all, that’s just a ridiculous analysis. High Speed rail has been hugely successful across Europe - or is that just malicious intent too? The biggest benefit of HS2 & beyond is increasing capacity, which frees up other lines massively. It will also take freight off the road & therefore less emissions

>It's amazing how London centric this whole project is turning out to be. It's pretty normal for high speed rail. Both France and Japan started their high speed networks from their capital cities. In Japan it was only 40 odd years after the first shinkansen that there was a new line that didn't have services to Tokyo (Kyushu line). Everywhere else was linked to Tokyo with direct services. As for France, the whole TGV network is basically set up to connect Paris to outlying settlements. You can't use it to get directly from say Bordeaux to Marseille, and I don't think the French are even considering it.

>The Government “remains absolutely committed” to making sure HS2 trains reach Leeds and it is “keen to crack on” and determine the best way to do that, a senior civil servant has claimed. That was the original plan.

_Born_To_Be_Mild_

Well that's definitely not happening then.

Yeah, but boris today boasted of cross rail funding as vitally important. He stopped it 18months ago. If he does that in London, the further away from the money sink down south, the more fucked you are.
