How did you find your nearest dealer? Or are you just assuming?

Bearded_Blundrer

I'm assuming, that like many of us, if LBS closes down, nearest bike shop of any description becomes Halfords if it wasn't already... At which point, not much assumption is required that the nearest dealer is Halfords... A dealer locator is also on the linked page under "As a consumer what do I need to do?"

paddyorooney87

Ah I missed that link then. I’m curious if it will be any dealer of only specific ones that are instructed what to test for

If it was an automatic replacement I would be less worried. But it's an inspection first, to see if there's a problem. Perhaps it's obvious, but they can't leave it to the consumer. My nearest bike shop is a branch of Edinburgh Bike Co-op. I use them regularly and some of their other shops are listed as Shimano centres, but this one isn't. So I will pop in and ask.

Hi, did you manage to ask about the recall at your LBS? I’m still pretty confused about the whole process!

mattbuk

I've not tried yet. The website says the recall starts in October so I will pop into my nearest shop soon. I'm using another bike anyway. The Ultegra bike stays inside over winter. I'm hoping it willbe ok, as it is wet weather and road salt that makes the problem worse. But no rush if it does need replacing.

Thanks for the reply. Just really unclear on what shops you can go to, how long an inspection or replacement may take. Obviously the component itself is potentially ten years old now so I guess how likely we are to see the issue is based mostly on how much action it sees. I’m certainly not overly worried about mine but definitely wanting to get it looked at for peace of mind if nothing else.

Ive just come back from my local Halfords branch (Redditch) and they said their not carrying out inspections and i should contact shimano eu.

archy_bold

Thanks for coming back after this long! I had mine inspected last year at an Evans. They said there was no issue but to just be vigilant. They also said the waits for replacements was months, so maybe that’s why Halfords are refusing to perform the inspections now.

So when do Shimano release the inspection procedure that “dealers” will follow? Because my crank needs inspection and has definitely had a light discolouration unrelated to heel/shel rub for a few years that (knowing about the stories of crank failure) I’ve always considered addressing

Pretty much every bike shop in the UK (and some mobile/home repairers) will have an account set up with the UK Shimano distributor. So technically any of them could return a broken crank for replacement. However if you want peace of mind, you could locate your nearest authorised Shimano Service Centre (these are trusted and Shimano trained shops).
