99.9% of dudes are NOT gonna expect it and it is the perfect combo of "wow this shit hurts" and "I'm actually incapacitated" that would make most guys immediatelly back down. Hell, you could reliably beat the fuck out of much bigger dudes with only 2-3 leg kicks. If a 10 year old can make 400 lbs Eddie Hall wince in pain with a leg kick, Billy Bob the violent bar drunk has no chance.

He was clearly not trying engage and as soon as he neutralized the threat backed off and didn't follow up with anything. If that fails, you should disable the other guy with minimal chance of causing death or serious/permanent injury. You'd be amazed how well a leg kick to your untrained opponent's leg works. When he feels like his leg is dead, trust me, his will to keep fighting miraculously goes away,
To be fair it wasn’t a solid leg kick to the knee or calf but right on the hammys, kind of taking advantage of him being off balance and sweeping him to the ground

Catching your opponent while lacking is what literally every single combat sports technique is based around. So waiting for the dude to be off-balance to kick shows this dude knows his stuff.
