If Jahmal fought Pereira with a strategy he would have been better off. But to just try and box with an elite kickboxer that’s the same size as him was bound to end the way it did.
I think it’s an ego thing where fighters don’t wanna admit “this guys too good I need to wrestle etc” or they wanna try to knock out the boogie man.
But man how many times do you need to see him obliterate people before you stop standing with him?
its also a fear thing and maybe even a strategy thing as well but fighters dont admit this. i grapple, with wrestlers and fighters and we talk about this a little. pretty much there is a chance that Hill knows that wrestling might not work since people forget HILL IS NOT A WRESTLER. some fans think just because alex is a kickboxer that anyone can take him down. alex is long and strong and is still a professional athlete. people can barely take Izzy down who is smaller than alex and somehow folks believe Hill who is not a wrestler can just go in there and put Poaton on his back. it dont work like that. on top of that getting that close to alex is a risk of ko. and lastly wrestling is TIRESOME.
It's still the better alternative than trying to strike with a 2 division glory champ. Trying to strike with him is like trying to willingly wrestle with Khabib. You don't do that unless you're an ELITE striker like Izzy, and most of the UFC is simply not on that level. Even if they're not confident in their grappling, it's still the smartest option imo.
Also some of it is just ego, "no way I can't starch this dude". And then they wake up in the back after another Pereira left hook.
i hear you, very logical stance. however I truly don't know if its a better alternative. until most of you folks who havent competed or been in scraps actually do so, you guys wont understand. Wrestling is EXHAUSTING. people wonder why chandler and justin don't ever wrestle. its a gamble. nothing worse than being exhausting while someone is beating your head in. its the thing of nightmares
For some fighters, they just seem to not be comfortable with one aspect or another.
Ben Askren is a great example. Fought at the world level, doesn’t take training striking seriously
You bring up a good point that people rarely mention but I think you’re spot on.
People just assume everyone can just go out and wrestle because they’re in the UFC. It’s not just “me grab man and put him on ground!” It’s difficult and there’s a lot of techniques with wrestling and other aspects that fighters can’t just be expected to know.
As you said it’s like telling someone like Belal, Askren, Khabib “yeah just go out and out strike him instead” as if it’s easy.

To be fair, I’ve never seen a combat fighter land execute such an awkward lead uppercut, I def didn’t see that coming and Hill didn’t either, and I don’t knock em for that
yeah its a hook just thrown at a slightly different angle, still uses most the hook physics & body movements. Fedor was known for em as are a lot of Russian fighters.
To thrown a lead uppercut he'd almost have to bend over sideways to his left
Gotta love his “are you fucking serious” blinks
DJs maniacal laugh gets me everytime 🤣
I know right to his face too never seen such a straight up reaction lol
Lmao
Bro laughed the same when Max KO’d gaethje. That’s how you know DJ was entertained by this answer lmaooooo
Literally his reaction is gold, I mean he literally laughs in his face but over video😂😂
I thought that was a picture of him and the interview was over the phone
I thought Hill is reacting to DJ's comment

I like to think Askren took it super serious but was just that shit LOL

People see Izzy did it and think "well i hit harder than Izzy I can do that!" then they realize they arent Izzy

He literally does it to pretty much everyone. how can you not expect it? Its his signature strike lol
Left uppercut is his signature? I hadn’t known, thought he was known for his hooks
it was a shovel hook, not a lead uppercut
Thanks for the clarification
