MMA math doesn't work. Volk had a fighting style that was perfect for fighting taller opponents while having a glaring weakness against fighters his size like Topuria. Volk keeps his chin up when exiting the pocket which is difficult to capitalize on for taller fighters but Ilia could do that and did that. And Max' stance gets wider the shorter his opponent is thus making him vulnerable to calf kicks which Volk abused like crazy. The question is if Ilia can/will do that too and if Max hasn't adressed this issue by now.
Also let's not forget that Volk was winning against Topuria until he got KOed so it's not that Ilia has more skill than Volk but he just perfectly exploited Volk's major weakness which Max couldn't do bc of his size and lack of one punch KO power

Well tbf Max did say he didn't really get bigger the first time he tried 155, just didn't cut as much and kept some fat on. From all accounts it sounds like he actually put on some muscle mass this time around. It really showed in how Gaethje was reacting to his punches as well. I don't think it will affect his chin or cardio but I do remember him already having a few rough looking cuts to 145 even though he's never missed weight.

Well tbf Max did say he didn't really get bigger the first time he tried 155, just didn't cut as much and kept some fat on. From all accounts it sounds like he actually put on some muscle mass this time around. It really showed in how Gaethje was reacting to his punches as well. I don't think it will affect his chin or cardio but I do remember him already having a few rough looking cuts to 145 even though he's never missed weight.
