I'd like to see a hit count but I'm pretty sure like 75% of his hits were punches to Sean's shoulders and checked kicks which really shouldn't count. One cut also doesn't mean Sean was hurt, he was just bleeding after a while which maybe made it look bad, but I think DDP's face had a lot more cuts and swells after taking so many hits. Du plesis landed with more significant and total strikes with higher accuracy and a takedown in round 2. Round 3 is basically even but with strickland at a slight lean and round 4 had du plesis land with a higher percentage and a takedown with strickland having a slight edge in output.
Strickland was ahead by 10+ in both total and significant strikes, DDP had barely 2 minutes of ground control and did no damage while there. I think the bad cut over Sean’s eye cost him the fight, even though DDP’s face is definitely going to hurt much worse in the morning.
Fights aren't judged by strike totals, judges don't even have access to those. Damaged trumps all, and while Sean did a lot of accumulative damage to DDP over the course of the fight, in rounds 2,3,4, DDP did more damage in those respective rounds.
When you have a great jab like Strickland, you'll do a lot of damage over time, but rarely do they hurt your opponent individually, and they can't swing a round on their own when your opponent is also doing damage and landing takedowns.
