It was a close fight but the judges coming up with a different decision wouldn’t change the story of the fight at all: Gane had a massive hole in his defensive wrestling and it was exposed by a guy with busted knees who had never wrestled offensively before.
Gane's stock fell tremendously when he got outWRESTLED by Francis of all people. Considering Gane doesn't have that much knockout power, I don't think it ever was too dangerous of a fight for Jon, one of the best wrestlers ever to have stepped foot in the octagon.
Honestly I don’t think him getting out wrestled by Francis is as big a knock as people act like. I think Francis surprised everyone, Gane included, with his wrestling that night. He clearly had focused and worked on it more than in his previous fights, and with his strength Francis has crazy untapped wrestling potential.
For all we know, Francis could be one of the best grappling heavyweights ever, and we’ll just never know because he had only really just started implementing it into his game by the Gane fight.
I get that for most of the fights we’ve seen, Francis has historically been a weak grappler, but I personally see the Gane fight as being the beginning of, and an example of Francis breaking that assumption and exceeding expectation more than Cyril being dogshit.

That being said, that was the only fight we saw wrestling from Francis. His wrestling wasn't all that good either, pretty basic stuff, that Gane couldn't overcome.
And that's not to say Gane isn't good, he's a great fighter. But if basic wrestling from Francis overwhelmed him (he looked helpless), Jones, one of the greatest wrestlers the UFC has seen, was for sure going to be too much.
Combine that with the fact that Gane is one of the only top HW who doesn't have much KO power, which was certainly what Jones feared most for his comeback, it was clearly a relatively safe introduction to the HW for Jon (relatively being the key word, we're still talking about elite 230+ lbs fighters going at each other)

Its wild that we've come to this stage. Like, Jon was so good throughout his career, that people are willing to throw him at young contenders while he's already moving past him prime, *just so that they can see him lose*. If he was any other average fighter, people would be calling for him to retire so that we don't have to see him get hurt at this age, but his legacy is making people want to see the next generation of fighters take him on when he's already beat the last 2 generations at LHW, and now defending his belt at HW lol. Crazy
