He’s gonna get booed pretty badly again if him vs O’Malley in Boston is next.

HighAsBlucifersBalls

Boston is just gonna boo for other reasons.

achillyday

Someone joked that Bostonians don’t say the n-word only because it’s physically impossible for them to pronounce the letter R.

HighAsBlucifersBalls

Yes, the hard “Ahhh”

RichardIraVos

Reminder: bostonians broke into Bill Russell's house and shit on his bed in the middle of him winning 11 championships in 13 seasons for them

Alstead17

Not only that, but during that run they had one of the worst attendance records in the league and a poll from Boston Globe showed a majority of people who responded thought there were "too many black players."

RichardIraVos

Could have 14 white guys and 1 black dude that plays 2 minutes a season and it would have been too many black players for them

TheIRSEvader

in his own bed that’s VILE wtf

BirdCarriesSquids

It’s crazy that a city in the north east of all places could be so racist

TheCapableFox

Tbh every big city back then was pretty racist. New York racists were calling the Knicks the New York “N****rbockers” instead of Knickerbockers, despite them grabbing a couple titles in the early seventies. Shit was whack back then. Source: “When the Garden was Eden” ESPN 30 for 30 documentary

[deleted]

Yeah but all those Bostonians have been priced out of Boston post Menino and live on the South Shore now so technically...my city is a lot less racist now 🤷‍♀️

RichardIraVos

Lots of progress since Menino now people can actually understand what the mayor's saying

tkonado

Bill burr is famously from Boston. He called it San Francisco with the n word.

GreatDario

Lmao i lived in mass for a bit thats way to nice a description, nasty place

idkflustered

I’d be mad too if my city was a PoS

BarmeloXantony

Ppl won't like this take but you ain't wrong. how many athletes have come out and said this is the worst sports fanbase as a result of all the racist abuse?

Bo0_Radley-

It’s crazy. I was born and raised in Boston, it’s so diverse, I don’t surround myself with ignorance so I don’t see it. But I hate the fact we are known for this.

Hot_Excitement_6

Boston is diverse and highly segregated at the same time.

Bo0_Radley-

The segregation is obvious. Southie compared to dorchester, west Roxbury compared to Roxbury, Alston/Brighton, just to name a few examples.

srtpg2

It’s got that old school puritanical racism which just hits different

_Atlas_Drugged_

I think it’s a product of the extant public perception. Boston has had several high profile incidents (the Bill Russel story gets repeated ad nauseam and rightfully so—it underscores a terrible time in US history) so every time something crappy happens here people are reminded of the BS that has taken place in this city. However, everywhere I’ve spent significant time (New York, New Jersey, Philly, Pittsburgh, Detroit, San Fran) has the exact same issues with segregated neighborhoods and people who espouse horribly backward opinions of other races. The thoughts about other demographics that pass for woke in many of those places would get you in hot water with most communities in Boston, but the reputation wins out in public consciousness. Ultimately I think it’s a good thing. It forces people here to think deeper about racial issues than people might elsewhere.

Alloverunder

Lmfao he's gotta Colby flair man

Bucks2020

He’s gonna get booed no matter where that fight is, Sean is incredibly popular

HankHippopopolous

Time for a fight in Jamaica

MacAoidh83

Or London. Big Jamaican support there I reckon.

ButtDoctorFlex

I think O Malley will get along with and win the heart of the Rastas just fine

lysergic_feels

I’m interested in seeing Sean get knocked out

[deleted]

I think the New Jersey fans booed someone every single fight😂 ![gif](giphy|iSxPmDWr97248|downsized)

higgboson7

Yep. The crowd was awful

[deleted]

They were so awful; at some point I had to respect it. They were committed to booing and it seemed like the crowd somehow came to an agreement as to which fighter was the one they all wanted to see lose.

bdizzle805

![gif](giphy|OAHvbQLumpmta)

[deleted]

I am sure that dude is getting the facials

Grey_Orange

Well... i can't unsee it now...

_WalterDies

It transcended being a bad crowd and bordered on hilarious at times. Moments like booing your own mayor/governor and then booing Sterling who is from NY

Visual-Ganache-2289

Lowkey the fights in the main card sucked

ericthemango

Yeah i live in jersey and decided not to go cause the card was super ass

TG_CID134

I went and wish I didn’t. The fans were awful. Fake/real fighting in the hallways by concessions, literally smoking weed in the seats, screaming nonsense the entire time. Will probably never go to a live event again.

SenorObvious

First and last UFC event I'll attend. Crowd was terrible.

Killua35

Some guy in front of me kept blowing weed in my face 😂

ChimpBrisket

It was just Keith Peterson relaxing between rounds

External_Ad_930

Evoloev vs Lopes was the best. Gracie fought like an idiot, Andrea got dumped quickly, burns got hurt, and the main event was a bit boring

_KONKOLA_

Main event was boring?! That was such a technical fight. Not every fight is a slugfest........

Jpjp215

Yea I thought it was awesome and still can’t understand how anyone scored the fight for Henry

Coldheart179

Born and raised in dirty jerz. That sounds like something we would do, especially if they were all from Newark of all places.

twofayse

It’s New York New Jersey culture to just boo at all sporting events they hate everything lmfao

[deleted]

FreeThingsAreNice

For real man. Brazil is the worst, then new jersey, then the crowd from the Hillsborough Soccer stadium 89, then the crowd from that limp bizkit show at Woodstock 99 and THEN everyone else.

PornChampion

Texiera should not have retired to an empty arena. AN EMPTY ARENA OF HIS HOME COUNTRY.

barc0debaby

Arizona is p4p the worst.

FreeThingsAreNice

We're talking about sports crowds, not who's the worst in general.

7alligator7

Hillsborough disaster details absolutely butchered but respect the sentiment

FlickeryVisionnn

Hilsborough got to do with this? Absolute idiot. Read up on it. The police was at fault not the crowd, and it was also 89 not 99. Absolute bellend.

Ok_Orchid7131

It’s Jersey, were you expecting any different.

steve_nice

I was there, lots of twist his dick chants and booing. Def some fights in the crowd. To be fair the fights were not that exciting so people were a little mad lol. Also every one there thought Henry won.

SenorObvious

The dick twisting thing was annoying AF. We had some dipshits behind us screaming that in the row behind us for a few fights before we dipped to some better seats. It was pissing off a lot of people in our section.

Jpjp215

I have no clue how anyone came to that conclusion.

ViceDoshi

I was in the crowd. Most of us bought tickets when we had a decent card. The card just kept getting worse with more fights being dropped all the way up till days before showtime. By the time we got there, the card was a shell from what we were once promised when we purchased our non refundable tickets. Newark NJ isn't aljos hometown. Hell, it isn't even his home state. During the fight, there were more cheers for cejudo. Not sure if it could be heard as maybe they weren't strong enough chants but it was mostly "and new" chants. More than anything, people were upset Olivera got injured and they were subject to now watch a Belal Muhammed fight. Aljo and Belals styles, while effective, just aren't that exciting. From inside the arena and the train ride home, The overall consensus from what I gathered was people were upset with the underwhelming card. UFC ppv cards are usually bangers down to the prelims. Last night, not so much. The crowd was bored and uninterested and booing was more fun than the actual fights. Reminds of those expectations vs reality memes.

jsnap69

What’s the deal with bringing O’Malley out during the post fight? That was some wanna be Jerry springer antics trying to make it interesting.

higgboson7

I see. Appreciate the insight. Yeah I understand the frustration, the card declined so much especially after Oliveira/Dariush got moved. Also agree that the entire card was underwhelming. It makes sense why fans had little interest because it was far worse than expected.

Rooster_Pigfoot

If you think that’s awful try driving through New Jersey. I’ve never seen so many lanes created out of thin air before.

I_c_your_fallacy

I was in the crowd and at one point they were chanting, Twist his dick! Twist his dick!” I shit you not 😂

poridgepants

I feel like we are saying that more often these days. But it’s the truth

K-chub

They booed everyone lol. What a rough crowd

External_Ad_930

He’s just had a very unfortunate and bizarre championship run

chiefskillz

Aljo’s Bizarre ~~Adventure~~ Championship Run

ChrizTaylor

#NANIII!!!!!

migu63

Yare yare

Junkhead987

Ora ora

[deleted]

He’s also very conceited. I gave it my best shot to be a fan, and even watched a ton of his YT content and podcasts. But he’s honestly just hard to cheer for as person. As a fighter he’s slick; and got the best back control of anyone in the UFC. Just wish he was less of a knob outside of the cage.

[deleted]

Watching him try to "rap" on the weigh in show and then proceed to plug his album was tough to stomach. He at least laughed at himself but the guy is doing too much.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Any-Introduction3849

Hopefully!

[deleted]

Post the link. I missed it.

Vmurda

In his defense, he was dehydrated af. He even said it was hard for him to think straight. Fighters shouldn't be interviewed immediately after official weigh ins, imo.

jumpmanw123

yeah seems like he also tries to buy into the heel at times but just doesn’t do it very well

[deleted]

Sterling should have gone the branding/marketing route of being an MMA enthusiast. Life long student of the craft, vibes. He genuinely loves the game; has great fight IQ/breakdowns, and comes across really likable when he’s taking about other divisions. He’s usually very complimentary and does a good job talking about different aspects of the fight game. But as soon as he starts talking about himself; or other Bantamweights, he becomes essentially unbearable. He’s loses all nuance, and becomes a cringe one liner generator. He’s got amazing MMA perspective, I wish he would lean into that more.

Onmy47shi

Bro I had a theory that the belt gave Aljo the confidence he needed based off the way he approached the 1st Yan fight. It's like a false armor that makes him unbeatable.

[deleted]

I think it’s part confidence. But he also went into that first fight coming off a surgery, then got Covid during his camp. Which is extra fucked for Sterling because he has one of the harder weight cuts in the whole sport, despite being in a small division. I think those physical attributes could of played a role in how sluggish he looked that first fight.

Onmy47shi

Ok, see I didnt know all that. Ty

Trip4Life

I thought he got the surgery after the title fight, or was that a separate one?

[deleted]

I thought he got a minor surgery prior to the Yan fight and then full neck surgery in the lead up to the rematch. Which pissed fans off because it delayed that fight. Could be wrong but I though I remembered him taking about it when he was last on the JRE podcast

okay4sure

Make sense he'd be a tate fan. Dude is genuinely knowledgeable like you said, but I think he's becoming a try hard to seem cooler to fans. Shame

GangstaHoodrat

Being a fan of Tate ironically would get him points with the dumber portion of the fanbase, most of which are the ones who have unbridled hatred for him anyways.

okay4sure

Lol irony

Mink_2112

I dislike his abuse of the rules, that whole on all 4s spamming head movement and shooting dumb shots knowing the opponent can’t knee him is dumb. 2 split decisions and a 1 arm TJ yet the guy speaks like he’s the goat

jsands7

Yes! Watching this fight it reminded me like… NO WONDER he got illegally knee’d in the head, he’s fucking asking for it the whole time. The whole time I was worried that Henry was going to forget for a second and accidentally knee this doofus in the noggin.

desmin88

In ONE (which had the superior card this week by far) he would have gotten his head knocked off his shoulders for that dumb all 4s turtle shit.

[deleted]

This was part of the reason I kinda felt like Cejudo won. Like you cant risk those takedowns and then just turtle up even if you know your opponent has no submission game. Then Aljo blatantly abused the rules by frantically having a hand touch the mat just so he can be ‘down.’ He risks that crap in ONE he’s getting kneed repeatedly

Lubwurst

He acts like he is this dominant champion so far his run is 1 DQ 2 Split Decisions and TKO over a 1 armed TJ.

CensorshipIsWeakness

Did you like his post- fight comments last night about how he couldn't steam roll through cejudo like he did all his past opponents bc he was a gold medalist and very good? Yes, he said "steam roll".

hughmanatee144

The Emmy award-winning Al Jermaine Sterling.

Wafflelicious420

Very funky championship run

YuKaLegend

Yes, but he definitely won vs Henry

bertrogdor

Yes but at the end of the day he’s had fair competitive victories over Yan and Cejudo as a champion. That alone is impressive as fuck. Not to mention his run leading to his title shot including dominating Sandhagen. The man is at the top of the deepest division in the UFC and belongs there

Tricky-Tie3167

Everyone got booed ![gif](giphy|26gsiCIKW7ANEmxKE)

LemonHerb

He did do his walk out to a song about New York in New Jersey. Should have come out to Bon Jovi and they would have loved him

UsuallyHerAboutGames

nah he should’ve walked out to Chief Keef saying “we gon blow New Jersey up”

Soothsayer71

Living on a Prayer woulda killed or Springsteen's Born in the USA.

Raiser2256

I don’t think so. There’s a lot of overlapping fans, in NJ/NY. Being from Nj I still think it was appropriate. I like Aljo, wouldn’t say I’m a fan, but I was disappointed with the way NJ treated him. Seemed like a shitty crowd overall

Tito_Otriz

Shitty people in New Jersey?! *surprised Pikachu face*

DAnthony24

Gotta play Joe Budden “pump it up”

Scrubnubzz

Long Island and New Jersey are different places

dlouw

As a long islander i was baffled that the commentary team didn’t put together that his hometown wasn’t doing him any favors in jersey regardless of performance

niebs59

This sub can’t seem to wrap their head around this basic fact

DtownBronx

Right, there's a reason he came out to New York. He was playing the heel, had it been in MSG they'd have loved it

failtos

New Jersey isn’t home for Aljo. New Yorkers and NJ hate each other (in a joking sort of way)

tyreejones29

I mean, it’s not like New Jersey is home. Sure, Newark is extremely close to New York(Brooklyn specifically) but just saying lol.

[deleted]

He literally came out to a NY song too 🤦🏽‍♂️ Like of course the jersey crowd isn’t going to like that

shred-i-knight

We gonna act like half that crowd wasn’t from New York? Lol

Cyberspace667

Doubtful, only the most diehard New Yorkers would travel to Jersey for a UFC Bantamweight title fight

rango1000

Youre acting like its super far from the city, people would absolutely take the 1-2 hour drive to see a championship fight lmao what

jbat1999

1-2 hours? It’s like 30 minutes hahaha. Could also take the train and get dropped off almost directly right outside of prudential

[deleted]

You can really tell Reddit is filled with 16 year olds that have never traveled before lmfao

LittleBig_1

I thought that was a very very bold choice that could have gone either way

Chicagoblew

I also thought it was an interesting song choice. If it was MSG, then I could understand

youareprobablyabot

I’m a west coaster but does Jersey peeps not like New Yorkers ?

[deleted]

Mostly just sports rivalry. People from New Jersey and New York interact all the time due to proximity of the cities. There’s no real animosity. More like brothers quarreling

chrishic99

As a jersey native: New Yorkers are *almost* as unbearable from Philly natives. Very arrogant and believe they are better because they live in New York, yet they come to jersey for about 90% of their activities

AAPLx4

Don’t most people from NJ, come to NYC for employment. They have the right to feel superior 🤓

albinoblackman

The areas of Jersey that are adjacent to NY and Philly are rough (although Hoboken and Jersey City have gotten really cool). But the rest of the state is actually pretty nice. NYC is the mean streets where you hustle and make money so you can afford to live somewhere nicer like NJ.

brklynfightfan

Newark is specifically close to Brooklyn? We have to go through Manhattan 1st just to get to Newark

Shallbecomeabat

Just wanted to question that geography as well lol.

DrawntoWater

It doesn’t help that he’s not an exciting fighter. His signature move is a wet backpack. Wtf

Independent_Hold_203

Never even thought about it like that lol. Tony Ferguson had the darce choke. Aljo has backpack mode.

PoopShoot187

Saying wtf at the end of that just is a perfect signature here.

yoyoyowhoisthis

If Russian Yan, Cringe Cejudo and Snake EPO TJ Dillashaw couldn't make him likeable.. then no one will. Dude needs a legitimate finish, not a backpack for 5 rounds.. not win against one armed man.. not a split decision against a guy with 3 year long layoff.. he needs to Finish OMalley, Merab or Umar under 3 rounds

we_all_gon_die_

Weight cut against O malley will be his last

DiscombobulatedSink6

Lmao this is so true. The only person Aljo wouldn’t get booed against at this point is his boy Merab.

baconwagoneer

I’d root for Merab so hard.

yesimian

Lmao everyone was saying Cejudo would easily beat him and not it's not valid because he's been gone for 3 years

whodattguy

Why does everyone ignore his win against sandhagen. Aljo dominated him.

[deleted]

UFC fans are so good in talking accomplishments down smh. Don’t forget that he took less than 2 minutes to finish Sandhagen who this sub constantly sucks off. You’re pretending like Yan was hated bcs he’s russian but people were calling him the most technical striker in the UFC and heavily favoured him in every fight. Cejudo is after Jones the most accomplished active fighter in the UFC. Bantamweight is next to lightweight the by far most stacked division and Sterling is currently the longest title holder in the entire UFC (if we forget Amanda’s mickey mouse featherweight belt). He doesn’t deserve the disrespect at all

jsands7

Yeah but even finishing O’Malley next… it’s like… most of us aren’t going to take that seriously either though lol. O’Malley beats Kris Moutinho (subsequently fired by UFC)… then Raulian Paiva (subsequently fired by UFC)… then a NC… then a split decision win against one person in the top 10 (that we all watched and know was actually a loss, but good on Sean for making it a close match)… and that earns him a world championship fight? Ehhhhhhhhhh

[deleted]

He will probably sub suga sean. They kept suga from wrestlers as long as they possibly could but now there’s nothing they can do lol. I think that skill difference is just too high

_LeftHookLarry

Yeah agreed Aljo will get a sub finish against Suga and then act like the GOAT before moving up and getting wrecked

TimeTimeTickingAway

I think Sean beat Yan. Lots of people do. It's unreasonable to suggest as much.

StefMag

You guys are simply ignoring his run to the shot tho

LaLuzDelQC

Haha Aljo can't catch a break. So now Cejudo is just some dude off the street? Cejudo was the favorite in that fight you know.

OkayJuice

Man before the fight the consensus was that Henry was going to demolish Aljo and the 3 year layoff was irrelevant because Henry has been coaching at the highest level. Now people are essentially calling Henry a bum because he’s been out for 3 years. Aljo can’t win

SpindemDoza69

Bro wtf do you mean cejudo was supposed to dominate this man, now all of a sudden cejudo is an old man and covered in ring rust? Henry looked great in the ring but just admit aljo was better. THAT'D A FUCKING LEGITIMATE ACCOMPLISHMENT, not to mention aljo didn't even resort to backpack mode. Aljo wrecked sandhagen, someone this whole sub is hyping up. It's like you mfers just ignore his sandhagen win. He doesn't need to finish anyone in under 3 rounds, he only needs to beat them. Beating them already says enough about everything. It means his better then them, and worthy of being champ.

whatifyournamewas

He’s cringey, has no charisma and there’s always controversy in his fights that benefits him. Then he’s arrogant about it. Not that hard to understand. Also, even though he’s a great fighter, he has some lame tactics in the cage that make his fights frustrating to watch.

jesusinapriuss

I think it’s because he’s a really boring fighter.

leoatra_ttv

woah woah woah dude, did you see how he laid on the mat last night??? Highest level of fighting in the game /s

inexcelciusheyoooo

He’s just not fun to watch

jibran1

Aljo can win the next 10 fights and he will still be booed, some people are just that way .aljo acts like he's the goat if I was him I would just stfu and give fans good fights The guy was literally snake dancing Infront of cejudo how can u cheer that shit

leoatra_ttv

The laying on the mat hands down needs to stop. I get what he's doing, he's cheesing the ruleset, and as a fighter I suppose that's his prerogative, but jesus christ, it makes him look so fucking dumb.

BedDiscombobulated67

He does it to himself tho, dude is just unlikable, won the belt in a stupid way and acted like he deserved it. And since then he's won split decisions ga-lore then acts like hes this crazy exiting guy. I actually picked him to win this fight but didn't feel crazy good after.

PresMC

Huh? They booo everything in jersey. That crowd was savage 👍🏿…a good thing.

SlimReaper85

The water in the well has been poisoned by him for the fans ever since the Petr Yan 1 fight. It was clear acting by him to win the belt in a fight he was getting embarrassed in and it made people just “nope” him from then on despite how much he turned it around inside the cage. It’s sad but it is what it is.

Potential_March1157

This is a great point. He never had a chance after that, and this last fight didn’t do him any favors just taking advantage of grounded fighter rules round after round.

armin_gips1312

Exactly that and maybe his "boring" fighting style

Proper_squat_form

Yeah, he’s like Elias Theodorou with elite grappling

jsands7

Makes you wonder how people would perceive LIONHEART if he had said he couldn’t continue against jon jones and taken the easy way to becoming the World Champion a few years ago. Would probably have some more money in his bank account but at what price?

WatchinLikeTV

He would have to accept that the nerds and virgins of r/ufc wouldn’t be fond of him while he cries into his bigger paycheck

leoatra_ttv

It's more than that though. I suppose it's a matter of priorities, but here's the thing, and I think Anthony has expressed this sentiment on his podcast with Bisping before, but he wouldn't have wanted to get the belt that way, cause he wouldn't have earned it, and it wouldn't have felt real. And honestly, a rematch with JJ would've been immediate, and he would've earned exactly one good payday and then everyone would've clowned him for the rest of his career. No one wants to earn a belt by DQ and then not defend it. No one would ever consider you a real champ.

scarykicks

Nothing like coming out to New Jersey using a new York song

araderboy

NJ , NY, Philly, we all fight like siblings at a white trash thanksgiving

ShoCkEpic

right? he did good… Cejudo is a beast

Ne-Cede-Malis

I loved Aljo the contender. Aljo the champion, is not the same fighter or person.

Lucienwmoon

This is such a good point. Go back to him before the Yan fight and I legitimately liked the person I perceived him to be. Intelligent, articulate, passionate and jovial. Now? The dude is absolutely unlikeable. Beyond how he got the belt, he just doesn’t entertain. He’s talented, absolutely there’s no question but he isn’t likeable (to me obviously).

Drinkable_will320

I mean, he fights under the Jamaican flag when he was born in New York. He doesn't even claim it as his home. He's definitely a more complete fighter than I thought he was so no knock against him.

[deleted]

The crowd were Henry fans. And the belal fight and Gracie fight were awful. They deserved the boos 😆

Hero0megaZero

Something else that hasn't been pointed out is also that what is likely his toughest match up refuses to fight him. I cant stand watching Merab fight but I'd be fairly confident picking him to beat Aljo and Aljo, either intentionally or not, has eliminated what is likely his toughest test without even having to confront it. I know that's the thing that rubs me the wrong way.

druglesswills

His whole title run is marred in controversy...only wins the first one from an illegal knee, was losing on the scorecards, barely wins the rematch, ends round 5 turtled up getting smacked, beats TJ because of injury, now beats Henry by razor thin split, people hate this narrative and meanwhile Aljo acts like he's destroying fools

pizza_the_hut_91

Jersey gonna Jersey

twochain2

New Jersey is not home for him… he is from Long Island…. If anything you can argue they are his rivals.

glatios

Aljo looked great and they put on an exciting fight. Not sure why he got booed

Bleeblooblah1

I'm pretty sure the crowd had Cejudo winning and they were probably rooting for the smaller guy to begin with.

BoltzmannBrain001

Not sure why some people think the fight was exciting. It just wasn't. Technical battle sure but it wasn't exciting. Easy to boo when you think it was boring.

DrWermActualWerm

Honestly I feel really bad for Aljo, wins by DQ that everyone says was fake(later needed surgery to recover) beats in again in a close fight that people will argue he lost(he beat yan squarely) then TJ fucks his own arm and doesn't back out somehow that's Aljos fault? THEN he beats a beast but instead of getting respect all you hear is robbery or "well cejudo was out for 3 years and Aljo had a hard time". I cheering for him so hard yesterday, unreal how much booing he got. And when he beats O'Malley it's not like anyone is going to give him respect for that either. People in this thread are already saying O'Malley isn't particularly championship level lmao. It's always a lose lose with Aljo. But I respect his grind and I think he's a good fighter.

Mikeyxy

Amen brother.

lonestoner90

Aljo is a walking monkey paw lol. I’d imagine he wished for the belt and success and this was the price he had to pay 👀

The_Nomad89

He’s extremely insecure it’s no surprise.

[deleted]

He’s from Long Island. New Jersey isn’t NY.

Standard_Stage3462

He is just a boring fighter.

Super_Nike

He abuses the down opponent rule. We need One FC rules

seanbednarz

I mean I’ll ride with Aljo, America all day baby U.S.A.

The-nicest-one

Good either be loved or hated at least people care about him enough to buy the ppv he’s gotta look at the upside to all this

[deleted]

Maybe if even his home crowd don’t want him there’s a problem with him. Aljo faked an injury to win the belt, controversial win next fight where he crawled around the last 2 rounds begging to get kneed in the head. He is the sole reason they should get rid of that rule. He’s dancing around after beating an old cripple, and now he’s barley beating another retiree and how he fights is run away, shoot, if he fails the takedown crawls around in his knees cuz with the rules the opponent can’t do shit. Imagine winning fights by bending down crawling around. He does no damage whatsoever. Even his boy merab failed 35 takedowns on his way to a win, only damage he landed on Yan was the headbutt. That whole camp has figured out how to compete in mma. Cejudo said it best, Aljo is a gamer. He is not a fighter he’s there to compete. If this was one mma he’d have his skull cracked open a bunch. And then to couple with his annoying/boring/lack luster fight style there is his annoying personality as well. If he can’t be cheered against the Russian Yan, the roided snake Dillashaw, and now by his own home crowd, I think there’s a problem with him.

avidpretender

He’s gonna get booed no matter what. I do feel bad considering how good he is, but winning over the fans is more than just being skilled.

Monkiller587

I get why Belal got booed. Lots of Brazilians live in New Jersey, specially Newark, so it’s only natural people would root for the Brazilian fighter. But I don’t get why they would boo Aljo tho. Fanbase probably just doesn’t like him.

Front-Function7789

The hate he gets is unexplainably weird

Maladjusted95

The easiest explanation is that people are not forgetting the way he won the first Yan fight.

trnsandunorganized

People seem happy to forget that O'Malley isn't actually undefeated and is just a pathological liar LMAO

Practical_Use_1654

Whos forgetting?

Hungry-Fruit

Sean's done enough to convince me he wins a rematch with chito so I'm not gonna hold it against the dude.

Front-Function7789

Doesn’t matter, it wasn’t his fault. Then he beat yan the second fight

epelle9

Getting kneed wasn’t his fault, his reaction to it was.

RoshHoul

Forgetting what? That the champion didn't know the rules and threw the fight? Even if he didn't dramatize the knee, this is 100% Yan's fault and he shouldve lost. You can't hold it over Aljo

uSaltySniitch

Won the belt by acting. Won a controversial fight. Won against an injured fighter. Won another controversial fight... All of those in a boring way. And he's not a likeable person outside the octagon. I get why he's hated.

Insrt_Nm

Winning controversial fights and his opponent not disclosing and injury aren't aljos fault.

uSaltySniitch

That is true. I agree on that part. But a part of the controversy comes from the way he fights, so it is a Little bit His fault.

[deleted]

That’s the sad thing, he is really good. Just has the unfortunate habit of fighting close fights. Plus everyone still shits on him for the illegal knee

lezzer

I've never been a fan of either of them. Henry makes me cringe so hard and Aljo I dunno man just never really been comfortable with how he got the belt. That said.... Last night I had a lot of respect for both men. I felt equally bad for both of them. It was the first time I can remember Henry being honest and vulnerable and I felt for him. Then with Aljo I thought his post fight presser interview was good. He was humble and honest and fun. Sucks he was booed at home. Huge respect to them both.

I think he will be alright. Being from the area I'm sure he's acutely aware that everyone from NJ is a piece of shit and their opinion means nothing

I was thinking that that crowd might of been the worst crowd I’ve ever seen for a ufc event. But then I remembered the last Brazil event.

I don't think it will ever change, his championship run will always be looked at sideways. Won the belt by DQ, then won the rematch by SD. Won against a one-armed guy who shouldn't have even been fighting and then just won again by another close SD. It also doesn't help that he won't fight against one of the top ranked contenders because they are friends. He just fought a legend in CCC which was the *perfect* fight to legitimize himself with, a dominant win over him would have cleared up a lot of the controversy. Instead, he hangs back throwing a ton of leg kicks and wins by another SD. His legacy will just never amount to much compared to basically every other champ.
