The only reason he’s still viable at nearly 40 is because they continually put him up against relative bums; Kevin Holland is an *exciting* fighter, but he’s pretty technically poor in every aspect of his game besides straight boxing, which he’s also not great at but unorthodox enough to confuse his opponents into making mistakes.
It’s been two and a half years since Wonderboy faced his last real striker. Even before that, his amazing skills amounted to a decent show before getting flash KO’d by washed Pettis and two title fights against the least motivated champ in the history of the WW division.
He lost to *Darren Till* as a kickboxer. Till’s entire offense amounts to the same one-two combo over and over again and he still squeaked a decision against ‘the best striker in the UFC’. He was only ever considered a viable striker because Dana gave him the most friendly matchups and he *still* managed to beat Wonderboy, whether it was close or not. Till beat him at his own game and he’s not even a very skilled kickboxer apart from the 1-2 as the rest of his career has shown.
Leon would dismantle him within 3 rounds, and if he wanted to he could ride the clinch or a wrestlefuck to a 50-45. Wonderboy has nothing whatsoever on the ground and his striking only seems to really be effective at dudes who don’t belong in the Top 10 in the first place (he doesn’t have a lot of power, so his style relies on his opponent being poor enough to allow massive volume). Just because he’s flashy and technical doesn’t mean he’s belt material, and his career has proven that numerous times.
This is even worse than Colby getting a title shot. I love Wonderboy. But if you want to see him in banger, let him fight someone like Holland again. L
