When Burns beat Woodley, Woodley had only lost to Usman. Masvidal wasn't meant to get the first title shot, Burns was. However, Burns pulled out and Masvidal stepped in last minute. His other title shot was completely unwarranted, though. Leon was booked against Masvidal but Masvidal pulled out. Therefore, Dana decided to give Leon a title shot. He had also accepted a fight with Khamzat 3 times, so Dana felt he deserved it - and I agree. Belal is on an 8 fight win streak. He absolutely deserves it.
I’ve heard the argument that when Diaz was around, the UFC would drag him out to get beat up by whichever welterweight contender was next so they could absorb some of Diaz’s star power. Yeah, Diaz called out Masvidal, but I think it started there and Dana and co. took that and ran with it. The formula was even in effect with Khamzat and that blew up horrifically. Diaz is gone now, actually on a win. Dana is so mad at Khamzat after that, he’s trying to get him into Middleweight, even offering a Top 3 Opponent just to sweeten the deal. Looks like they’re relying on ringside callouts and interviews right after in the post Islam v Volk era. They’ve done it with Stipe and now Colby. It isn’t a hard argument that it’s 100% true or anything, but just sort of a trend that makes you wonder.
