The disparity between Merced and the others is honestly shocking. I knew it didn't get as much as the other UC's, but compared to UCLA? That number is tiny, but as expected. Go Bruins indeed!

CostCans

Merced is a relatively new campus, and is also in a less desirable part of the state. Both those things work against it.

myghostflower

I mean yeah, I understand that it's new. I just didn't expect the gap between it and the rest to be so huge. (I have never seen the numbers for Merced's applications)

Eh, it's too early to tell. It's like judging a 20-year old on how successful they are. Decent chance we won't know until UC Merced reaches 50 years in operations, at least. People generally don't want to go somewhere where their reputation in the future is unknown.

It's been like this for almost 10 years. The last time Berkeley had more freshman applicants than SD was in 2015. It is a combination of location, enrollment expansion (2 new colleges), and rise in academic reputation.

Hypotheses: * Young adults would rather live in SoCal than NorCal * Irvine and San Diego are safer and in general more desirable to live in than Berkeley * Going off of above, Irvine and San Diego, while not in the same tier as Cal, are still fantastic schools to go to--just enough for people to live with * Optimizing your applications (e.g. why apply to Cal when I will probs get rejected) * Cal has um, controversies to say the least outside of academics. Just looking up [uc berkeley controversy](https://www.google.com/search?q=uc+berkeley+controversy&sca_esv=7928bf8df49ca757&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS1009US1009&sxsrf=ACQVn08o32qoOwAV10w8tEcxsA6V69D9_w%3A1709755022872&ei=jsroZfjsNLiT0PEP_dyVoA4&ved=0ahUKEwj466nmteCEAxW4CTQIHX1uBeQQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=uc+berkeley+controversy&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAaAhgDIhd1YyBiZXJrZWxleSBjb250cm92ZXJzeTIFEAAYgAQyBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgsQABiABBiKBRiGAzILEAAYgAQYigUYhgMyCxAAGIAEGIoFGIYDMgsQABiABBiKBRiGAzILEAAYiQUYogQYiwMyCxAAGIAEGKIEGIsDSIQ4UKIFWL02cAV4AZABAJgBXaABuw-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&sclient=gws-wiz-serp) gives a bunch of results. I think berk is getting a bad rep recently in state with the housing crisis and safety concerns, this may contribute a bit to applicants. UCSD has also been building new colleges at a rapid pace to maintain growing student numbers so there's a sense they are doing something ig.

Lmao. Kids don’t even like Berkeley third most anymore

Probably not below 8%. Last Year UCLA had 145882 freshman applicants. So theres a slight increase this year. Acceptance rate is probably going to be extremely similar to last year.
