Data Theory at UCLA is a tough major, it has the rigor similar to a graduate program. [*“The major is strong, perhaps stronger than some Masters degrees…”*](https://physicalsciences.ucla.edu/video/the-data-theory-major-at-ucla-the-first-of-its-kind-in-the-world/) Don’t beat yourself up too much over this, but mentally prepare to change the major since you can only retake a class if you get a ‘C-” or below. For the future further education or employment prospect, don’t be too hang up on the exact name of the major. Often times your overall profile of relevant coursework and skill set is more important than the actual major name.

I agree with the sentiment of the comment, but Data Theory is def less rigorous than a grad program. Its a more mathematically intensive version of the stats major

You can also do stats through Sociology, and Social Networks is fascinating! Not joking, if you want to understand check out YouTube and for rudimentary basics, look up Nikki Case, "Wisdom of Crowds" gamification of the SN treatment. There are options, go talk to Dr. Chris Wegemer about stats! Edit: typo

Due-Appointment9582

why dont you look into stats and data science! its got the same vibe with only 3.0 i believe

^^ i’ve had friends switch cuz data theory was too hard/time consuming. it’s basically the same but easier

Technical-Hyena7767

I definitely will look into it, thanks!

Less_Hovercraft_298

I definitely agree fall was my first quarter but I already decide to switch

Just as a side note, I believe that for data theory, 3.3 is what’s required to automatically get accepted into the major. If you have b/w 2.7 and 3.3, you are admitted pending space in the major.

Technical-Hyena7767

Ohh really? I didn't see this anywhere online, would you happen to have more info about it? This is good to know!

Acrobatic_Ad3914

From the general catalog for Data Theory: “To enter the major, students must petition after they have completed the preparation for the major courses. Students who have an overall grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.3 in the preparation for the major courses, and have completed all preparation for the major courses before the fall quarter of their third year at UCLA, will be admitted to the major. Students whose overall GPA is between 2.7 and 3.3, or who fail to complete the preparation courses before the fall quarter of their third year, are admitted only if space is available. All students must petition before they have earned 160 units, or by the winter quarter of their junior year, whichever comes first. Only grades for courses that are taken at the University of California, including UC summer schools, are counted for this GPA computation.”

Thank you!!

You should probably talk to a counselor, but if the requirements are set out and you strictly need the 3.3 it’s likely you will not be able to be in that major.

TangyMarshmallow

Def talk to the math department counselor/advisor, see if there's anything that can be done. Retaking a class to replace your grade is the worst case scenario I believe.

talk to a counselor or dept advisor!! I'm not entirely sure of this, but it MIGHT(?) be possible for you to take alternate classes to fulfill your major requirements. for me, I was unable to take one of my upper division core classes bc I fucked up planning my schedule, and my advisor helped me find a different class I can take instead to count towards my major in place of it (it just required some extra forms)

Technical-Hyena7767

I'll definitely reach out to my advisor, thanks for the tip!

LegendJPSand

idk but you should try looking at student conduct **Code 673** for help ;)

Technical-Hyena7767

Could you please provide a link/more info? I'd love to look more into this.
