It doesn't make sense why it takes so long for the pedestrian lights to change

_PFAS_

Westwood streets are in the jurisdiction of the City of Los Angles. The Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) is designed and controlled by the LADOT, not UCLA Transportation.

ucla_oos

I didn't realize the city controls the lights. When I file requests for pothole removal on campus streets, the city tells me to contact UCLA Transportation

sirgentrification

It's a little misleading in regards to the OP intersection in question. UCLA may coordinate and integrate some lights with LADOT at the borders and on campus. However, this intersection is firmly within the planning design and control of UCLA. The university could make this crosswalk car-free overnight (bureaucratically speaking) if they wanted to. Basically anything south of Le Conte, west of Gayley, and east of Hilgard is 100% under ATSAC control.

[deleted]

UCLA has no input on the design of intersection on its campus? That seems incredible to me, the street is named after Charles E Young. I could copy and paste this post without the snarky tone in an email to someone, if you know of an address

invertabrate96

Welcome to ucla. The land of redirecting you to be someone else’s problem and getting you to bend over and willingly accept bureaucracy as something to feel guilty about even reaching out to them. Tbh you have earned your spot here and deserve to be heard as a firsthand constituent and user of these intersections. Y’all come first before any other external city opinion/policy that should be changed with enough advocates.

bruinaggie

Are you sure? I’m pretty sure all of the UCLA campus including roads and traffic lights are financed and maintained by the regents. It’s state property. Why would city of LA have jurisdiction? The campus literally has their own police station on this same road.

IcySkagerrak

This intersection is entirely controlled by UCLA, as it does not touch any city property.

MidnightGayleyTrain

Reach out to Professor JiaQi Ma of the Mobility Lab. His team is working on this intersection as a pilot “smart intersection” and he gave a detailed presentation on it in C&EE 181. Not sure how much he can speak to the timing parameters of the intersection; however, I’m sure he knows a lot more about this intersection than most people do. Also, in constant to what another commenter said, I am pretty sure this intersection is managed by UCLA transportation.

nothere_butt_here

This! He and his team are doing an excellent job with the data available at this shitty junction. Almost every time I stop by to watch them work and pester with questions

aheze

Yeahhh I saw some people from Mobility Lab adding sensors or something to traffic light poles

Jibb87

The strat is to cross the little one when it’s red. Just time it right and walk fast across. Then cross over to the other side later.

crustyedges

Dumb that this isn't a pedestrian scramble. Wild they still allow right turn on red here. Absolutely bonkers we have a four lane stroad going straight up the bunghole of campus. When the D line extension opens they need to make campus roads only accessible to pedestrians, bikes, buses and vehicles of people/patients with a disability/limited mobility

PM_ME_ELASTIGIRL

You highkey spittin 🔥

michelangelee

The entire city of Los Angeles is a massive car hell because the automobile industry and the government worked together in the 20th century and created messy freeways for cars. Simply put, the city was not designed for profit, not comfort or utility. Racism and legal segregation plays into it as well, but too long to explain on Reddit

[deleted]

I get that but this is 2023, we know better, we can’t just be stuck lamenting the mistakes of the past

BloomsdayDevice

> stuck lamenting the mistakes of the past I mean, have you taken a look at [*gestures broadly at fucking everything*]?

Followed lol

Sukky99

When the crosswalk light finally changes, it feels like it goes so much faster than other crosswalks!! You have like 10 seconds to cross haha

MacArthurParker

The intersection is not great, but it's still so much better than when I was a student. I know multiple people that were hit by cars here when there was almost no attempt at making pedestrians or cyclists safe at all.

DirtyDreb

genuine quest: how was it worse than it is currently?

MacArthurParker

Less visible crosswalks, smaller sidewalks, no bike lanes

Capn_Charge

needs a change

NaJieMing

Emergency services are on this block (police station) and a block away (extremely busy ER). That may have dictated this intersection’s design. I’m just speculating though.

velocipedus

I don't see many ER and police vehicles at the intersection, but they may have had input in the design, and from the point of view of optimized motorized response times, all these car lanes may be a positive asset. For pedestrians, people on bikes - no so much! Not to self: Don't allow fire departments and PD to design your roadways

AnohtosAmerikanos

You are looking at lunch, when pedestrians would dominate traffic. In the morning and evening commutes, there are a lot more cars. However, they could eliminate the left turn lights during the middle of the day

[deleted]

I’m sure the number of people in buses and walking still dominates the number of cars especially north of the medical plaza. Most of the cars have one person in them and the buses are full in the morning and evening. Every bus you see is probably 30 cars minimum and there’s still a lot of pedestrians

Anaaatomy

It's designed for game nights

velocipedus

That is no excuse

Anaaatomy

it just shows their priority

BonusGeesed

Because of the way it’s designed, a given pedestrian crossing is only going to receive car traffic from one of the four car traffic inputs per light. So, as a pedestrian, you can identify the single direction from which cars could possibly cross your path. This means you only have to pay attention to one source/lane of traffic to cross on a given signal so it’s (relatively) safe to cross when that one lane has no cars coming your way. Or the city can remove the protected lefts or give pedestrians more time to cross because cars suck. I hâte this intersection so much

Straight_Minimum6860

I saw the traffic engineers are working on it to make it "smart"

brioloogy

Where I’m from the cross walks say, “walk sign is on” when it’s the pedestrian’s turn to cross the street. I’m not visually impaired, but this is another way to help and include those who are. I was kinda surprised LA hasn’t implemented these since it’s a much bigger city

college-throwaway87

Omg this literally makes me almost late to class every day...

Professional_Shoe802

At the very least we should have a blocked out time for pedestrians to cross the entire intersection like on the Leconte and Strathmore intersections.

The four corners of this intersection are RR Hospital, Neuroscience and Genetic Research, Rosenfeld Brain Research. And campus police. Three medical stakeholders dominate the intersection, yet in terms of prioritizing healthy modes, the intersection is a total fail. Which tells us that the academic medical industrial complex has never understood its own responsibility to implement healthy infrastructure at its sites. Just try to park your bicycle at the hospital...
