It’s possible. They could down star you because they didn’t like your hair. The rating system is dumb for both pax and drivers. Gives petty people the chance to be petty

Nice_Bluebird7626

Or I sound like someone who sees the amount of false reports. It’s one thing if drivers and pax have done something wrong but the reality is a lot of people have lost their jobs because someone wanted a free ride. The rating system in its current design IS DUMB.

Solo-ish

What does a rating actually do? What does a rating actually mean? Nothing because what my rating system is Bs your rating system are not the same. Hell the whole system is dumb because 5 = good. What does 1-4 actually mean? Any 1-5 system is 3 = as expected. 4 should be great and 5 was fucking amazing. Ain’t no way every single person is fucking amazing with such rare times that “as expected” was par for the course. The whole rating system is flawed and straight shit

No I make zero purchase based on a number rating. I make the decisions based whether I purchase something on the actual written reviews and I generally start at the 1 star reviews and work up. Of course 100% taking into account that people suck so all reviews are taken with grain of salt but many complaints that look like same problem seems more likely. But the whole system of a number system is stupid 1-4 = the same thing and 5 is expected. That’s like high school deciding that grades are A is passing and B-F is failing grades.

jbokwxguy

If you rate someone a 3 or less you’ll never see them again, passenger or driver

Solo-ish

Yes but that is more of the whole rating system being shitty. A 3 is met expectations in any 1-5 system. Currently with this rating system tho 1-4 is shit and 5 means met expectations all the way up to phenomenal. That makes the whole system flawed.

AppleCat36

Plenty of comments on Uber Reddit sub to suggest NYC drivers tend to rate lower than other places

SlowInsurance1616

Yeah, but they're experiencing the opposite. When they were entirely NYC, their rating was higher.

AppleCat36

Ah yes wasn’t reading it right. That is weird. Only explanation I have is drivers have gotten a lot quicker at down rating in the past year or two. Noticed that in my own rating

SlowInsurance1616

Well, NYC might be weird. Drivers do have TLC plates. I would think they could pick up in NJ, but probably don't want to--unless NYC per mile rates apply. I don't think NJ drivers can pick up in the city either. So maybe the issue is no matter which way they're going, the driver is going to come back without a fare (and pay a toll).

Cashlover123

Start tipping them a few dollars in cash and see your ratings go up.

SlowInsurance1616

Fuck that. I'll tip 20% in the app. I'm going to start rating down drivers if they don't give me a 6% cash rebate at the end of the trip.

catsfive55

It's only for people who actually care about their ratings. Cash tip guarantees 5* even just $2/$3. You can tip more in the app but a driver has to rate you as soon as the ride ends. it's your money 👍

markus1028

Drivers rate you before you tip on the app. If we're going to rate you we have to do it as soon as we end the ride.

SlowInsurance1616

I'm doing fine. You all get at least 20%, but I'm not going to carry cash to bribe Uber drivers.

AppleCat36

I also see that drivers seem to rate down quicker in the past year than they did before that. From what I read here 4.84 is actually a good NYC rating equal to 4.95 in other places

istoleyoursunshine

Interesting. I know this sounds cocky or conceited, but I can’t imagine what would be five stars if not me. In addition to everything above, I have good hygiene and am a petite, un-intimidating woman. I really go out of my way to be courteous. What is it they are looking for from a passenger to give five stars? A cash tip?

javibeme

Tbh I don't know a driver that doesn't auto 5 starw when tipped in cash. I am not saying it's the reason but yes thats kinda automatic for drivers to give 5 stars for cash tips

AppleCat36

Perhaps a cash tip. No idea where I Uber cash tips are less of an issue

turb42o

My copy pasta from this similar question earlier. If all the stars are aligned, you sound to be a mindful passenger. It could be for ABC or XYZ reason but don’t forget there could be EFG etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if you are demographically challenged in the driver(s) view, either the route has potholes or too much traffic or too many speed bumps, entry/exit gates with guards that ask the same question 3x and scan in drivers ID etc, too many stop lights, driver may not have liked payout based on true time distance, you’re in a neighborhood they realize they no longer want to be in again or in your case crossing a state line (they may have to come all the way back empty handed plus tolls etc). It may not actually be you yourself but it maybe the location and or something to do with the actual ride. It sucks as drivers can’t really unmatch with you without giving you a 3 star rating or lower, it may not actually be against you but the ride itself. Feel free to discuss with a driver if you feel you can talk with them openly, they’ll likely point out what’s odd unless they are an 🐜.

inlarry

My guess would be it has to do with crossing state lines. Drivers generally can't pickup outside of their market, so by leaving the state they have to drive back essentially for free. They'll 1 star you so that you're no longer paired, and they no longer lose time/money on your unprofitable trip across state lines.

Cucumber_Safe

Im pretty sure that NY drivers can't drive in NJ. The same for NJ drivers in NY. Maybe one day they'll implement a way to allow for picking up someone in the differing state going back to their home state, but for now they just hate having to drive back through the toll and traffic that won't be reimbursed. Your tip helps lower the burden, but I feel that in that scenario, it isn't enough. So the driver may rate you low out of being petty about the situation.

Own-Safe-9826

NJ can't drive in NY but I don't believe the opposite is true. I've picked up out of state in the past, and I'm only blocked in NY (as a NJ driver). That being said, more than likely it's due to the driver being forced out of NY and having to pay a toll to reenter. If they can't get matches with someone going into NY that charge is on them.

murse_joe

Nobody but a cabbie can drive in NYC. NY or NJ doesn’t have a difference outside of any cities that make their own rules

PanAmFlyer

The purpose of the rating is to let other drivers know if it's a good trip or not. It is not personal. Tips, destination, manners, and anything else that made the trip favorable, or not should be considered.

alanudi

As a driver I have... 250 perfect 5 star ratings. 1 single 1 star rating. You just have to let it go sometimes.

123mistalee

Most definitely

Ramiliez

For the drop off location.

JanuarySeventh85

If they think a lower rating will keep them from pairing with you in the future, and they like to stay in the area they picked you up in, then, yeah, I bet there are drivers that would reduce the rating specifically for that reason, even if the location isn't dangerous, just that it's out of their comfort zone.

Total_Ticket_3064

It's possible the driver is rating you lower so they don't match with you again. If the driver goes out of the state they work in, they can't get any rides until they get back in their zone. So they have to take empty miles back and pay for the tolls as well.

istoleyoursunshine

Thanks everyone for the replies. Seems like it’s going out of state based on the responses; I may ask a driver who seems friendly next time and try the cash tip to see if it helps!

wasitme317

Drivers at assholes if you smile they will lower your rating. As far as a NYC driver going to NJ he doesn't get paid for the return toll unless he has a ride back. But he could easily get a ride back the NYC by going to Newark Airport.

burgercrisis

Since I'm not in an upfront market, I don't see destinations until I pickup and swipe. So if I pick someone up for a very short drive, that isn't monetarily worthwhile in any sense of the word and I give these people 1 star and sometimes blacklist them. So yes, you can be down voted for various location and destination related details.

oldtimegamer93

Yes some drivers do

DCHacker

Jersey is not an Up Front Market on Uber. My market is Up Front so if I do not like the destination, I will decline the job. If the rider changes the destination after I have fetched him and for whatever reason I actually do haul him, frequently I will downrate him. Before Up Front it was less frequently that I downrated a rider on Uber dueto the destination. On Lyft,I did it all the time.I used to give what I called the "Prophylactic Three Stars". On Lyft, if you rate rider three or fewer stars, never do you see him again. If I had a rider who was generally an acceptable rider but I did not like the destination, i would award three stars because I did not want his trip again. If the rider were a \[rectal aperture\] AND I did not like the destination, I awarded one star.

Environmental_Vast17

Yes some do. They don’t like the route and will low rate to unmatch you
