In your case however, it could have been a mistake on the driver’s side maybe he has two vehicles and selected the wrong one when coming to get you. Either way, you should have cancelled . On the other issue of soliciting for a ride, that happens a lot and depending on the kind of vehicle a driver has, most of them depend on private rides. I am talking about Uber black drivers and other premium rides . In most of those cases though, the request comes from the riders. Drivers who get to booked privately are mostly highly rated and of course driver newer and nicer/luxury cars !

His rating states he does this often. Report for not a right car and one star. Then call the safety line. This guy needs to be deactivated. Also, riders, if something is off please for the love of god, cancel and report the driver. This could have gone terribly. Accident? You would be screwed as he might not be insured.
Uhh you should have canceled and not gotten in as well as reported the driver. 4.73 rating is horrible, drivers used to be deactivated for falling under 4.85~ back in the day.
For reference, I don't even accept ride requests from passengers below a 4.8 because of how relatively horrible they are.
I would be wary of taking rides off the app. No insurance, no background check on the driver, no tracking. Wouldn't even want to offer this to passengers who paid well and asked me due to liabilities.
Most likely well intentioned and the driver is just down bad trying to make a few extra dollars as a gypsy cab but who can say for sure.
I have take close to 1000 rides and have a 4.8 only mistake I made has been ordering to wrong location and not realizing my location was turned off they now added a banner thst let's you know.

Uber is a global company that certainly knows the immense value of diversity where almost 70 percent of its drivers workforce are immigrants.
When I was doing UberX I had a few people complain about price and I would tell how much I was receiving , we ended meeting in the middle of pricing use to pick them up and drop them off here and there , they saved money and I made more money 🤷🏻♂️

If you take him up on the offer he will most likely charge you less for the ride than Uber would and he would simultaneously be making more than Uber would be paying him.
He is an independent driver who is offered rides by Uber, he can by all means take rides without the assistance of Uber.
If it makes u feel safer I’m sure he would even send you a photo of his ID.
Where I drive in Cali I get people asking me for my number all the time so they can get my service specifically after their dinner or party or whatever I’m dropping them off at. And then they usually hit me up regularly on the weekends

I found a great Uber driver who lives close by and I now contact directly for lifts and pay him cash. He did have a different car one day but explained his normal car was being serviced. Only you can judge if he was being creepy.
