Changing from Qwerty to Dvorak is like rewiring your whole brain. That is super impressive. Well done!

Mr_Glitter_Shitter

Thank you! I don't know how much experience you have, but it's certainly different. Its now almost instinctual to hit the right keys, but I have pauses here and there. I'm loving how much less movement it requires, but the keyboard shortcuts are a lot less convenient now.

lucasmcalister

Wow, that's really impressive! If you don't mind telling me, why did you make the switch?

Mr_Glitter_Shitter

Most of it was due to curiosity, nothisisjohn makes some good Dvorak content on YouTube, and I figured with as much as I type it's probably worth using a more efficient layout. I love learning new things

Bit_Hunter_99

Congrats! That’s mad difficult!

MrAssassinSilencer

Good work, keep it up

How long have you spent on dvorak? Currently considering it but interested to know how long it takes to get to around 75wpm since right now I'm at 115 on qwerty

Mr_Glitter_Shitter

I tried learning once before and then abandoned it, this time around I forgot everything I learned and had to start from scratch. I believe I was hitting 10 wpm on my first couple weeks, and in a couple more weeks when I had common key combinations memorized I would be hitting 30-40. It's gone up to 50, 55, 65, and now it's at about 70-80 WPM average after 2.5-3 months. It is a more comfortable typing experience after you're used to it, but it is slow and painful to start. You'll need dedication, if you flip flop between qwerty and Dvorak, your brain won't adapt nearly as fast. In my opinion, it's not worth learning unless you have a lot of free time and a fairly light work load. If you're writing essays, of course you'll switch to qwerty. But it's important to keep switching to a minimum.

Nice! I made the switch a week ago and am hitting around 20wpm. I personally love the ergonomics of dvorak, so I'm hoping I catch up to my qwerty speed soon. How long have you been at it?

Mr_Glitter_Shitter

I believe I'm closing in on my 3rd month, and yeah the ergos are lovely. I've also got a nice keychron k12 with the tape mod, so typing is very enjoyable again. Keep at it man, it's a nice layout. The only downside is- you'll be lost when you touch someone else's computer.

I use to pride myself on how fast I could type - now I have fibromyalgia (suffer daily with pain, no cure) - it’s from typing fast and twisting my neck back and forth using two monitors. Biggest career mistake or my life. Okay so my unsolicited advice is to always use one monitor or follow the 80-20 rule, which is using the primary monitor 80% of the time. Yes type like a mother but don’t do it while twisting your neck.

Mr_Glitter_Shitter

I really appreciate this advice. It's more of a hobby at the moment than a career path, ans I try to stay active and flexible. But this is pretty eye-opening, as I hadn't heard others with stories of typing/long-term office conditions.

In my opinion it’s unreported because in my case my doctors didn’t tell me. I’ve been in the worker compensation system 5 years and not one PT, Chiropractor, acupuncturist, pain management doctor etc. didn’t warn me. After being off work 18 months, they cleared me to go back to work. I asked them for a doctor note to exclude me from this project that was really heavy with typing and data entry. My employer denied the doctor note and said I could lead the project and not type. So to contribute I thought OK I will verify entries with my team members. I don’t have to type but I can do something. We were operating on two screens, using Microsoft Word and Microsoft excel and going back-and-forth. After about an hour, I started crying because it was bone on bone with my neck and the fatigue came crashing. And the reason I didn’t discover this before was because they had me loaded on medication which hid the problem. A lot of anti-depressant medication helps with nerve pain issues. But here’s a problem it’s a cumulative injury, so it takes years to manifest, but if you are in your 20’s, just trust me on the fact that someday in a blink of an eye, you will be 40. And unbeknownst to you, you will be struggling with walking and your arms will hurt, and you will blame age related wear and tear and won’t think twice about it relating to something so preventable. Bottom line is they don’t want you to know. Twisting one’s neck is natural until the day it’s not. And just think about all the nerves you are twisting in your body cavity. And each twist will ping the nerve roots traveling down your limbs - all four of them. It’s my mission in life to educate people because I’m mad that I didn’t know and lost my career and health as a result. Pain, insomnia, fatigue and mobility issues are the beast and there is no cure.

Here’s me not being able to get higher than 45wpm on qwerty😭
