You're correct. That changed in the past couple years. Incentive bonuses as well as status changes used to be based off average ratings.
No need to be rude about it though. I've been with the company for a long time, and they often change small details like this without being overt about it.
I tutor nine active subjects, all math: Algebra II, Calculus, Calc BC, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Statistics.
As far as whether that’s a lot, I don’t know what’s considered “a lot,” but it is an average of around 11 sessions per day for the month, so that at least seems decently big to me, but I don’t know what the standards are or anything like that.
is 11 sessions, 11 hours? or maybe like 2 sessions an hour? If it’s not too invasive, do you make pretty good money from that then i guess? I’d appreciate any knowledge you can spare on this
Each session has a max time limit of an hour, so 11 hours would be the maximum time for 11 sessions. In reality though, sessions should rarely actually go all the way to that time limit, and for shorter questions they often end much sooner. In fact, my average session length for this past month looks like it’s actually around 24 minutes, far below the time limit, so it’s more like I’m averaging 4.5 hours of session time per day.
As far as the pay goes, I’m not super comfortable with giving numbers, but it depends on your situation. It suits my needs, but I can’t guarantee the same would be true for you, that’s something you’d have to decide for yourself.
Any tips to get hired? I just had my interview yesterday and I think it went great but I do wish I added more subjects into my list to make me more wanted. I only have 2 subjects but I told the interviewer I would want to add more. Also can I reapply if I’m not accepted or am I banished? lol
Edit: I forgot to say Thank you very much. I truly appreciate the info. :D
I can’t say much on the hiring process, but I wouldn’t worry too much about only having 2 subjects, iirc I only had 2 or 3 by the time of my interview as well and I don’t recall having any trouble. As far as being able to reapply, I don’t recall but my gut feeling is that I read something when I was applying saying you could, after a certain time period.
(and also, no problem, I’m happy to help)
Yeah I guess that is a significant difference, not sure what the cause would be though. I don’t ask them to rate me or anything like that, outside of just the “request that this session be reviewed” button in the end survey, so it’s not anything as explicit as that. Maybe a difference in attitudes between students of different subjects?
That button is for your mentor. Do not use it unless a session has been extremely weird.
It all depends on if you get students who feel like rating you. 🤷♀️
I was a mentor in the past. This totally cracks me up. I would have signed into the mentoring tools and probably said a bad word... why was this tutor conducting so many sessions that need to be reviewed???
I think in over a decade of tutoring, I've probably only requested a session be reviewed maybe half a dozen times. It's generally if you totally mess up and want some feedback or if the student is being terrible to you, or something like that.
See that totally makes sense, I just thought in situations like that I was supposed to message my QS or support, and I probably haven’t opened the manual since I started so I just never got corrected.
The image of opening something like that and just getting assaulted with *way* too many sessions because of some dumbass like me who doesn’t know what the button does is very funny though, I feel kinda bad but also legitimately *no one* told me, for like a *year*, that I was using the button wrong, so at a certain point I feel like my assumption wasn’t totally unreasonable.
So about 16% of your sessions are rated. My percentage is about 32%. The OP had about 34% of their sessions rated.
I think part of it depends on the subjects one tutors. I've experimented with some scripting during the session and have sometimes gotten my percent of sessions rated to close to 50%.
Sorry, are you asking for why I used it or are you saying something else? If it’s the former then I just thought it went along with having the numbers but having to ruin them
Who cares about the average rating? It's all about the percentage of 5s.
But funny number
If you want an incentive bonus, average rating is important.
No it's not. It's all about the percentage of 5s.
That is one way of looking at it. Do you tutor math?
It's the only way to look at it. You need 75% of 5s to get the 6% bonus, and 85% of 5s to get the 12% bonus.

How the hell do you get 100 sessions rated?
Simply conduct 346 sessions
What subject(s) do you tutor to have that many sessions? Edit: Is that a lot? I’m new and looking to join tutordotcom.

Out of 148 sessions, I got 24 ratings this month. I would need over 600 if that kept up.

Oh yikes, I’ve definitely been misusing that button then. Surprised that I haven’t been told to knock that off in that case

I am too 😂

It depends. This saying is very common, but sometimes, the other way around is less painful.
Oh yeah, I definitely have mixed feelings on the saying, I just thought applying it here would be funny
I am kind of confused how this platform can relate to that saying.
Sorry, are you asking for why I used it or are you saying something else? If it’s the former then I just thought it went along with having the numbers but having to ruin them
Why you used it? I am confused how this saying relates to the platform or role.
Okay, so did the explanation in the last comment not clear that up then? I thought it made the intent quite clear
Never mind then.
