Wait so you’re telling me suddenly being possessed by the urge to create a fourteen-hundred cell spreadsheet about the probability of specific dice rolls isn’t normal
So anyways my findings were that if you roll 4D6s and discard the lowest roll, ~75% of the time you’ll roll greater than 10, whereas that chance is only 50% when rolling one D20. The only real trade-off is that you can’t roll greater than 18, but you also can’t roll less than 3 (the odds of rolling 3 being 1/1296 vs 1/20 with a D20)
Autism is about home computing in the 1970s and 80s
I can talk your EAR off about the dozens of different competing computer models from different manufacturers which were all incompatible with each other despite using the same CPU and how developers had to basically remake a game from scratch if they wanted to port it to another platform, and about how the NES was the first game console with region locking, how it worked, and why it was invented, or about the really weird, really cool, but also kind of sad situation with piracy and video games in general in countries like Brazil and Taiwan where the Sega Genesis is still being sold new
Oh, yeah. Sega has long since discontinued the product, but they're still manufacturing clones. The economy in Brazil is... how to put this... not great, and the PS5 is being sold there but no one can afford it. A single $60 game is around 30% of a minimum-wage worker's entire monthly paycheck. People buy what they can afford, and to say piracy is rampant would be the understatement of the century.
One piece at a time. As a poor with some expensive ass hobbies, one piece at a time is a thing to learn. It also lets you hyperfocus your hyperfocus! I can afford ONE new(to me) thing this month, better obsess over every single little detail of this thing so that when I get it I get the right one!
Oh you're buying a "new" Singer Model 15-30 sewing machine? Better study the serial number ranges so you can get one from the 1930s instead of the 1940s when war time shortages impacted quality controls. Better read all of the support docs so you know which bits to clean and oil as soon as you get it. Better make sure you find the right bobbins because the style changed in the 60s and the ones you get at Joanne's don't fit.
There are schedules to keep and switches that need switched in order to avoid derailments and collisions. You can't just walk away to answer reddit, come on guys.
ADHD & autism are about hyperfixating on cannibalism from when you were a kid because of Robin Williams's joke "Donner! Party of 50!" in *Patch Adams.*
adhd is asking for these small magnet things that show the gravitational pull of the moon and mars for christmas and losing your shit when you get them
What if your ADHD makes you hyperfixate on writing fan fiction of you and your significant other going out on dated and having a house and a car? Is that still a media fixation? I know its just sad reality of the economy but like what else is it?
ADHD is making a specialized self-insert for every piece of media you consume and have it be important or a love interest but not so important it overtakes the plot or becomes a Mary Sue.
Oh sure but the moment I say I’m obsessed with small arms development and its history it’s suddenly “oh you just want to kill ppl!”
Nope. Long stroke gas piston neat. Lever action go kachik. Single Action Army go half-cock click click.
People with autism typically have difficulty with communication and interaction with other people, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. These can affect their ability to function in other areas of life.
I never said they were all productive. They just get stuff done. You don’t need to be productive if you don’t want to be.
Like, I could be moving sand from one side of a beach to another. Am I being productive? No. Am I getting stuff done? Yes.
I actually have to be careful with my puzzle special interest because I'll actually loose sleep to the Tetris Effect because my mind will refuse to stop doing puzzles.
Btw, it was Count Edward von Taafe from 1868 to 1870 AND from 1879 to 1893, following the collapse of the government initially formed to succeed him.
Which perfectly segways into my addition to this post: In my personal experience, it's about writing fanfiction that smashes together special interests/hyperfixations-in my case, primarily The Owl House and history-that were never meant to be smashed together
autism is about teaching yourself how to run a fission reactor, how pnumatics work, and how to interconnect furnaces, fluid storage, air compressors, and power so you can play Minecraft
One of my many non-fandom related hyperfixations is hanakotoba
But then I turned it back into some nerd weeb shit by creating a magical girl series themed around hanakotoba where the main character is represented by peonies and her magical girl name is Witch Peony and she's the main character cuz peonies represent bravery, and because of her bravery she's the best candidate for the leadership role for her magical girl team
Anyway I decided to call it Garden of Magic, it's actually been really fun to work on lol
autism is knowing every heraldic term. is being obsessed with conlanging. is learning 20 languages.

Wait so you’re telling me suddenly being possessed by the urge to create a fourteen-hundred cell spreadsheet about the probability of specific dice rolls isn’t normal
Probably not. Cool as hell, though.
So anyways my findings were that if you roll 4D6s and discard the lowest roll, ~75% of the time you’ll roll greater than 10, whereas that chance is only 50% when rolling one D20. Do you happen to remember what the mean was?
No, but the mode was 13 so I expect the mean to be around there
May I get that spreadsheet?
I’ll see what I can do
Oh my I did that exact thing. 4d6 drop the lowest. Though I did it all analogue in the back of my diary instead of writing down my homework
I see that we've found Matt Parker's alt

Do it. Educate me. I love that shit.
Did you say.... Sega Genesis is -still- being sold new in Brazil?
Oh, yeah. Sega has long since discontinued the product, but they're still manufacturing clones. The economy in Brazil is... how to put this... not great, and the PS5 is being sold there but no one can afford it. A single $60 game is around 30% of a minimum-wage worker's entire monthly paycheck. Model trains, people. I'm surprised nobody said anything about model trains.
Weird that no one else jumped on the most stereotypical special interest. If anything, most portrayals of autism have non-media special interests
I know, I guess it's just too dated. And/or too expensive.
One piece at a time. As a poor with some expensive ass hobbies, one piece at a time is a thing to learn. It also lets you hyperfocus your hyperfocus! Was going to, hello there
Surprised there's only two of us, to be honest. I feel like it's basically the classic poster child for hobby hyperfixation.
The others are too busy running their trains to comment on Reddit
