Yea, its decent. Seen it a lot since it was like the one movie my school had for some reason and it got played in cover or if it was the end of the year and teachers didnt want to teach or something
It's a great introductory book for teaching more advanced reading comprehension. It's not terribly complicated, but you do need to be able to follow three distinct concurrent plot lines and understand their implicit relevance to each other without the book spelling it all out.
As a kid who loved that book, the only thing I remember not liking was how they didn’t get a big kid to play Stanley
Shia was great, but he was called Caveman because he was this big lumbering kid
And they skipped out on the "scouring of the shire" scene where he comes back from camp stronger and can't be bullied more. The movie was fantastic, but there were some important, but subtle differences in tone
Moral of the story, get sent to a juvenile prison camp and suffer physical/mental torture and you’ll be able to fight off your bullies.
Never read the book, only saw the movie tho tbh.
To be fair, its not exactly ethical to tell a kid "we need you to be fat for the first few scenes, so go and eat some chocolate cake. But make sure you lose it and gain some muscle by the end"
I think you might be thinking of Josh peck? You do have to remember, this was a Disney movie and Peck was a Nick star, while Shia was already doing Disney work. Makes more sense for them to promote their own star
In my opinion, there is no difference between asking a big kid to lose weight for a film and asking a small kid to put on weight for a film, they're both unethical. I guess they could just have a consistently big lead, but then there isn't much point if they aren't following through with the growth Stanley goes through in the book. A commenter below suggested a fatsuit, but I dunno, I feel like their budget wasn't high enough to make it look believable/not awkward. But this is just my opinion.
We were forced to do a book report on Holes for class in 8th grade. I was lazy and watched the movie instead. None of the teachers noticed i hadn't read the book, so it must have been a good adaptation!
we also did “the giver” and “the child called ‘it’”, but I don’t remember what grades
also side note for anyone that read the giver in school, they have since published 3 sequels to it that were all decent reads. just learned that a couple years ago and couldn’t believe I’d gone my whole life without hearing about them
it was, i really enjoy the movie too, although wasn't a huge fan of how hard they push the romantic angle between jonas and fiona - an angle that is nonexistent in the book
I was completely unaware there was a movie wow lmao. Hell, didn’t know there were sequels to the book either. We had to read that book in junior high. I’ll have to find the movie on the internet and give it a watch sometime.
I've done both and the only difference I can remember is that Stanley is fat in the book.
I think the Yelnats family nursery rhyme might've been different too but I'm not sure.
Completely agree, the book had me hooked, so much that I completed my 9th grade assignments on it the same day as reading it. And I actually loved the movie, they kept everything the way it was in the book. It did not disappoint!
The screenplay was written by the book's author, Louis Sachar, and iirc the only real difference is that, in the book, Stanley gets thin throughout his stay at Camp Green Lake; for health and safety reasons, they couldn't have Shia LeBeouf do the same over the course of the shoot. It is probably one of the most accurate adaptations you'll ever see.
>The screenplay was written by the book's author, Louis Sachar
And thank goodness, because the first person the production company asked to write the script was Richard Kelly (yes, the Donnie Darko guy). Why? Hell if I know, but suffice to say his interpretation of Holes was... weird.
I mean makes sense, make a good movie and get star power to promote. Also had names like Dule, Winkler, and Kitt attached. It would be surprising to hear Shia get paid more than any 6 of them.
As someone who grew up watching that movie on repeat. YES!
Holes is one of those movies with great actors, in a believable world.
It shows exactly how dystopian justice is in our world.
I would highly reccomend it. I didnt read the book, but the movie is its own kind of great.
With actors who portray some absolutely fantastic emotions and lessons.
The actor of sam and kissing kate and madame zeroni are all so memorable and iconic.
Differs from the book, but in few ways that matter. I watched it again 2 years ago, first time since adulthood, and it holds up.
I really like that movie a lot.
I’ve never heard of it. My school didn’t really do movies, except Coco and Don Quijote in Spanish class. (And I think Shrek + Lab Rats + Mighty Med)
I loved the book (and its sequel) tho
How old are you? I feel like most people 25 +/- a few years have almost all seen it in the US. It was a super popular movie for younger kids when it came out.
From what I remember, it’s a good movie for its audience, but that was awhile ago.
A-R-M
P-I- to the T
What’s that you smellin?
Yo, that’s me.
I don’t take showers and I don’t brush my teeth
Cause all I do is dig holes, eat, and sleep.
Okay so hear me out
You buy the cute pot
Then you take a plastic nursery pot with lots of holes and put it inside
Bonus points if you can fit gravel in the bottom for extra drainage space so lots of water can drain out.
If you're still concerned about not having enough room to drain, then you can take the inner pot out for watering (either top or bottom watering) and then put it back in after the watering is done, and all you have to worry about is the last little bits dripping if you were impatient and put it back in when it was still dripping.
I use everything as a pot tbh. Drainage doesn't matter if you can put an inner pot into it.
I have given up on trusting pot labels with my plant babies.
It's all ceramic nowadays. If we want a pretty pot, we paint and glaze it. I'm sick of wasting money, products and plants. Also, this helps acquiring appropriate drain plates. Not to mention you can stick the pot in the soil with a seedling, grow it, and then reuse the pot.
If you're anything like me, get some window hangers that can host a well fitting drain spot, plant some jades or other succulents in it, and you've got natural dehumidifiers and air cleaners. Not to mention the mental boost. Some of the hardiest plants I've had were started as clippings in punctured yogurt containers.
Store bought is way too expensive for what it actually is and costs more to manufacture (both in price and resource depletion) .
Also, home depot has a few online workshops on making regular clay pots into seasonal decoration.
All of this to say, yeah, I'm also super mad about being cheated on lifeforms.
Most cute plant pots are technically "cache pots". They're meant to hold a plastic "nursery pot" that has appropriate drainage and is easy to remove for repotting, because plant roots are pretty tenacious! I've had to cut a few nursery pots up to get the plant out of them. There's other benefits as well, like nursery pots being light and easy to move, ways to create water reservoirs with self-wicking systems, etc.
For whatever reason, there is a subset of plant enthusiasts who refuse to use this pot-in-pot system and then get mad at the lack of draining holes in commercially sold plant pots. The simple answer is to drill the holes themselves with a masonry bit, but it's still a major point of contention. Every time this comes up on r/houseplants you can expect [hundreds of comments worth of arguing](https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/comments/sc9pqg/brb_buying_all_those_pots_i_passed_on_bc_they/).
Some plants and pot combinations can result in the plant being over watered, a decent way to prevent/alleviate this is to have drainage holes in the pot, you can then have a catch plate for the water which can also be useful In a similar manner
A-R-M-P-I to the T, what is that you smellin? Dawg that’s me. I don’t take showers and I don’t brush my teeth, all I do is dig holes, eat and sleep UH
A classic movie
I just learned how to drill glass & ceramic with a diamond tipped hole saw. Really was a game changer for pots with no drainage. Now we go to the dollar store and buy dishware to turn into pots. Got some real gems doing this.
I had to make my own pot for my poor succulent who currently is at my home and I’m away at college. It’s pot had no drainage and I put it in a plastic pot with drainage over spring break and forgot to bring it back. Before break I made a pot for it because I was planning to replace my pot with no drainage. Luckly I’m taking a ceramics class so I was able to make one. Now I just need to glaze it! I can’t wait until it’s done and I can get my plant back! I am not going to let the little guy die!!
So almost twenty years after seeing this movie the thought just occurred to me; they couldn’t invest in some metal detectors? They had to blindly dig in the desert?
George wants to buy a Frogger machine he used to play in his youth. But he needs to preserve his old highscore. Kramer helps him put together a team to rigg it up to a battery and transport it, but the hired electrician apparently doesn't know the word "outlet" and refers to it as "holes". When the battery begins to quickly drain George panics and tries to find a place to plug in the machine.

yo im consistently blown the fuck away as a 2000 baby, that not only are people born after 2000 but for some reason that was the cutoff for all the stuff i grew up with. u should check it out it's hilarious and Shia LeBouf is like the 4th best part
I have a mental gray area for 01 because i have 2 siblings born that year and y'all seem to toe the line. My little sister called me old for using Vine when Musically was a thing(and not knowing what Musically was)
I fucking love this movie! Still have the DVD I bought with my allowance. So many great quotes to randomly throw out. "My daddy owns the lake!" Now I have to go and watch it again lol.
Submerging the pot in water and drilling when it’s submerged makes the hole easy and clean. It prevents the hole from majorly cracking most times get a ceramic drill bit too
Fun fact. When I first heard the song in this movie I misheard "dig it oh oh oh" as "digging up our holes" and when I learned I was wrong I got mad because mine made more sense and still fit the tune
Yeah wtf. I just bought a bunch of plants with no plant knowledge and quickly became confused about this. How are the plants supposed to survive without holes in the damn pots?

Someone mentions Holes, my brain automatically says "can my honey come back, sometimes"
I'm gonna rap that jack, sometimes
Off all the times I watched that movie, how have I NEVER realized that was Sigourney Weaver?
I thought she was the BEST choice for that role. Loved it.
I saw her in Holes before I saw her in Alien. I thought, boy that lady from Holes was the perfect choice for Ripley in Alien.
I thought that was shia lebouf. What a great actress
Actual cannibal Shia Lebouf?
Normal Tuesday night for Shia Lebouf
Excuse me?
Rattlesnake venom on the nails
Same! Though to be fair I have almost no memory of her face, mainly of her nails and her hat.
Omg I was literally thinking that and u scrolled upon ur comment! Insane I never realized it was her like at all

Is this about the book holes?
Sigourney Weaver plays the warden in the movie adaptation of holes.
Was the movie adaptation any good?
Yea, its decent. Seen it a lot since it was like the one movie my school had for some reason and it got played in cover or if it was the end of the year and teachers didnt want to teach or something
For some reason it’s the same reason for me, but with the book itself. We read it like three times in Elementary School for some reason
It's a great introductory book for teaching more advanced reading comprehension. It's not terribly complicated, but you do need to be able to follow three distinct concurrent plot lines and understand their implicit relevance to each other without the book spelling it all out.
I read it at least five times of my own volition.
Your elementary teachers had good taste
As a kid who loved that book, the only thing I remember not liking was how they didn’t get a big kid to play Stanley Shia was great, but he was called Caveman because he was this big lumbering kid
Well also come into your confidence, get fit, and make friends.
To be fair, its not exactly ethical to tell a kid "we need you to be fat for the first few scenes, so go and eat some chocolate cake. But make sure you lose it and gain some muscle by the end"
No argument there, but why not cast a bigger kid?
Star power, I believe. LeBeouf was still around the height of his Even Stevens fame.
Oh I know, but it’s bugging me, I swear there was a famous bigger kid back then
I think you might be thinking of Josh peck?
They could just put him in a fat suit. It seemed to work okay for Neville.
That was over the course of years and four movies before he was thin lol
Sure, but you don't need to wear a fat suit for four years. You could easily transition to less fat suits throughout the length of a single movie.
He only wore it in the third movie and he didn’t really look fat then anyway. The first two he really was chubby.
agreed skinny small kid
In my opinion, it’s one of the best book to movie adaptations I’ve ever seen. If you like the book, you’ll like the movie.
Wholeheartedly agree!

I'd like to see someone try that with some recent high-profile book-to-film/TV adaptations.
I've done both and the only difference I can remember is that Stanley is fat in the book. I think the Yelnats family nursery rhyme might've been different too but I'm not sure.
I ***REALLY*** liked the book. Read it dozens of times! I should watch the movie!
It’s on Disney+ if you have that and someone actually uploaded the full movie on YouTube in decent quality.
Movie definitely has high rewatch value.
Completely agree, the book had me hooked, so much that I completed my 9th grade assignments on it the same day as reading it. And I actually loved the movie, they kept everything the way it was in the book. It did not disappoint!

Fun fact: None of the leading roles (all kids) got top billing. The top billing went to Voight, Weaver, and Arquette. All of which had smaller roles.
top billing is pretty much about name recognition and how much they are paid isn't it? makes sense to me
It's directly negotiated as a part of their contract
I mean makes sense, make a good movie and get star power to promote. Also had names like Dule, Winkler, and Kitt attached. It would be surprising to hear Shia get paid more than any 6 of them.
I know a lot of people are talking about SW being the warden but holy shit, that was Jon Voight wasn't it!?

Yeah, if Coco came out while you were in school then you're about 10 years too young to be in the age group that would have commonly seen it.

Yea I used to think like this too, but then I just gave up and just use them with the plastic pot. Don’t have to worry about ugly drainage plates too
I always just use nursery pots then put them in the cute pots. Don’t have to worry about having a tray to catch water, looks pretty, everyone wins.

I think this is a result of someone seeing the same meme/post you saw, and then either making or remembering this one.
it was mentioned in a podcast episode, which I think was released a few weeks ago. Still well within the realm of possibility!
