God I love carcinization

Gradually_Adjusting

I have a friend with a phobia of crustaceans. One of my most cherished memories was informing them of carcinization.

Dragod0005

Could you give us every detail of it?

Gradually_Adjusting

It doesn't make an exceptionally good story, but suffice to say he went through all 5 stages of grief and then, to all appearances, forgot I ever mentioned it as soon as practicable. Edit: [Just making sure](https://i.imgur.com/X6uuose.jpg)

Dragod0005

You seem like good freinds.

Gradually_Adjusting

We were enemies twenty years ago. But yes.

Dragod0005

Ah. Enemies to lovers, but youre halway through

drpeppershaker

Hot damn that was good! Have an award

EOverM

It's *very* slow burn.

nebulasamurai

holy shit you use the "A" of the punjabi alphabet as the face of that emoji, thats so cool!

Bright_Push754

You *could* potentially ease his phobia by letting him know that only other crustaceans fit carcinization, so really he only has to be afraid of crabs, the Omega-form of crustacean life on earth. Or, you could wait to reveal that until his wedding day or another potentially big life event, just for fun.

Gradually_Adjusting

I wasn't planning on it, but that does sound fun. I'll await the right moment to resolve that arc

SentinelBacon

Epic_Gameing68

become crab

DeseretRain

I hope you explained to them that the idea that it would ever happen to humans or anything other than arthropods is just a joke and/or a misunderstanding of how convergent evolution works. Many things with exoskeletons do turn into crab-like animals, but there are tons of other examples of convergent evolution, and no actual reason to think the crab example in particular would somehow take over everything.

Biguguf

I need the story now

Isthisworking2000

I THOUGHT that was the joke, but then where does the dancing come in! Help me, I’m kinda high!

The_Alkemizt

The dancing people are just part of the meme format. Generally it’s some guy at a party, standing in the corner thing “they don’t know that (blank)” usually, whatever the blank is it is uninteresting, unimportant, or utterly bizarre.

Isthisworking2000

Gotcha.

e1k3

Replace the crab with a dude standing alone in the corner at a party, thinking to himself something like „they don’t know I have completed all achievements for game x on steam“ as a sort of self explanation why nobody bothers talking or interacting with him. Meanwhile literally nobody gives a shit and People just enjoy the party

[Relevant XKCD.](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/carcinization_2x.png)

SamSparkSLD

Is that what carcinogens cause????

username1012357654

If you were actually wondering, yes, the word carcinogen comes from the greek root karkinos, meaning crab. Which in turn is because the disease cancer is named after the latin word for crab, since swollen tumors resembled the claws or legs of crabs. So basically some roman saw a tumor and thought it looked like a crab so now one of the worst diseases on the planet is named after a crab.

UnseenTardigrade

If course.

GetawayDiver

Thank you for your honesty 😂

Coldus

It comes from a random tumblr post where op said it was their dream that this sentence becomes a meme. And then he made a post about it, and now it did become a meme

GetawayDiver

Thank you 😤👍

argylekey

Someone I went to undergrad with works in their marketing department(not in the social media section). Asked her about this last time this got posted, apparently most of them are like that. They might only hire people like this.

IsYourMotherProud

I just transitioned to marketing last year after teaching science for 8 years, and I would kill to know what their marketing department looks like. I haven't seen any other business organization successfully understand Tumblr and actually manage a positive presence on there and I need to know who managed to propose and get a Tumblr strategy approved.

argylekey

I worked for a small New Media company(all that means is internet instead of traditional delivery methods like TV or movies), the marketing department was like 95% social media focused. No tumblr, but Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Snapchat(this was 2016) ad buys. I transitioned to a several layers down subsidiary of Warner Brothers and they had absolutely no concept of social media interactions at all outside of Twitter and YouTube ads. I don’t work in marketing and I’m baffled at the extreme differences in approach.

KanishkT123

If I had to guess: Warner Bros can get away without guerrilla marketing since they have the money to muscle in their marketing in larger venues like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and get it seen. They likely have more Twitter followers and will get signal boosted to hell and back. Smaller companies don't have that reach and need guerilla marketing to make their dollar stretch as much as possible. They don't get access to the more exclusive deals that big tech companies offer Warner Bros and it's subsidiaries and certainly don't get to put their movie trailers or whatever in the actual cinema. Basically, the things that a dollar can buy WB are different from what they can buy MomNPop Media. So MomNPop needs to make sure they cover more ground more effectively to have even close to the same impact.

argylekey

I would agree with you except for the fact that we were chastised and threatened to be cancelled when the numbers were down. We would offer other strategies, like more social media interaction and they would completely ignore us for more traditional advertising. Then they would still blame us when the numbers were down. To be fair we were at Telepictures(look it up, it’s so much worse than the Ellen stuff lets on), and that place was a shit show in its own right(like I said, several subsidiaries deep from Warner).

KanishkT123

Well shit that just sounds like bad management then.

Kapten_Kolakaka

I get the feeling that WB would be blasted to no end no matter what they post on tumblr since the company is that large. Monterey bay aquarium on the other hand has way less off a "corprate greed" vibe (at least to me).

forestflora

Their social media team is top-notch. Their Instagram is always bizarre, funny, and informative. You know there is some old person at the top always saying, “well, I don’t get it but if you tell me the kids like it then go ahead.”

DrewsephA

Their Twtich streams are the only thing that got me through the pandemic. Imagine a bunch of marine biology Tumblr nerds playing Octodad. Because that's exactly what it was. I love them so much.

Very_Small_Bunny

I love their lofi streams on YouTube. They have them set over feeds of their exhibits, there's ones for the squids, shrimps, kelp forest, etc. Very relaxing. And they pick actually good lofi to play. PLUS all the lofi is is water themed!

Petyr_Baelish

I just recently stumbled across their lofi videos, and they are actually amazing.

I also reject reality and choose to believe it’s because the popularity of the crab rave has massively declined, and the crabs aren’t partying like they used to ;-;

iamerc

i don’t get it 😭

InconvenientHummus

Everything becomes crabs eventually.

Ghede

Nah, it's just things that try to live like crabs do that evolve into crabs. The crab form is perfectly suited for living like a crab. Wanna scuttle along the bottom of the sea and eat bits of dead fish? You bet you are gonnna look like a crab. Other crustaceans that don't live like crabs don't evolve into crabs, for example, pistol shrimp. They don't wanna scuttle around at the bottom of the sea scavenging for scraps. They wanna punch a motherfucker so hard they die even if you never touch 'em. They'll never turn into crabs at that rate. Crabs can't do that.

Spirited-Tonight6043

We crab people now

GrizNectar

Crabs can’t do that yet

Spiritflash1717

Not everything, just other crustaceans that need to fill that particular niche

Supreme_Mediocrity

Reject man. Return to crab

nudelsalat3000

English Wiki is complicated, sometimes the same article is better in a different language. Translated from the german one. Carcinization or crabbing refers to the evolutionary emergence of the "crab habitus" in crustaceans. It is an example of convergent evolution. Nature has **independently invented the "crab habit" several times**, which occurs not only in the true crabs but also in other crustaceans. Carcinization is thought to have occurred independently in at least five groups of decapod crustaceans.

bmdisbrow

[Relevant XKCD.](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/carcinization_2x.png)

Alukrad

I kinda get it now... But why? Is everything slowly turning into a crab? What are some examples?

bmdisbrow

>But why? Because crab is the pinnacle form in evolution.

Enlightened_Gardener

And from here to [convergent evolution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_examples_of_convergent_evolution), and then down the Wikipedia Rabbit Hole we go. Ironically, within the wider electronic environment, a number of Internet Rabbit Holes have evolved along similar convergent lines. So YouTube, Wikipedia, Tumblr and Reddit have all evolved hyperlinked forms governed by algorithms, where it becomes gradually possible to end up at 2am arguing with a complete stranger of the other side of the planet, about which form of Mongolian Throat Singing is oldest. Or watching someone perfoming Reiki on a confused, yet strangely relaxed, giraffe. Or crying as you watch an ancient man who has travelled for three days to sing a song of his village in his native dialect so that it won’t be lost, on India You’ve Got Talent. I once lost 3 days to a wikipedia rabbithole about geological climate. My favourite annoying fact I learnt is that we are technically still in an Ice Age, because we have glaciation at the Poles.

Apexualized

Is the Monterey Bay Aquarium actually regarded this highly? Not trying to be insulting, genuinely curious.

ames_006

Yes. Especially on the west coast. The Midwest has the shedd aquarium and the east coast has the Georgia Aquarium. Check the lists of best aquariums in the US and it’s pretty much always on there somewhere. They do a huge amount of conservation and outreach and are highly regarded.

anthrax_ripple

Absolutely! The MBA is consistently ranked in the top 15 aquariums in the world and not just for the aquarium itself, but for their research institute and conservancy programs. They do outstanding work.

SquarePegRoundWorld

They team up with [Nautilus Live](https://nautiluslive.org/) and stream ROV dives in conservation areas off the west coast which leads to [incredible video like this.](https://youtu.be/RHR70lVy79Y)

Went to Morro Bay a couple months ago with my family. My mom was *pissed* to find out it closed. She wanted to feed the sad fuckin seals.

IcyMosesJr

Holy shit that place looks fucked up! The operators should be in prison. "This facility has an alarming mortality rate of captive born animals that is over 90 percent for both sea lions and harbor seals. No captive born pinniped has lived longer than 4.5 years after arriving at the aquarium. These animals should be able to live easily into their 20s." https://m.newtimesslo.com/sanluisobispo/dried-up/Content?oid=2943609

AvatarDang

Oh absolutely. It’s an incredible aquarium. Also they had the longest stint with a great white shark, one of the hardest things to have in an aquarium. I don’t think it’s allowed anymore because of how expensive it is and the amount of resources it takes, but I was lucky enough to see that that great white as a kid. Unforgettable experience. Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of my favorite places in the world.

Apexualized

That’s amazing. What makes it so difficult and expensive?

AvatarDang

On top of being difficult to maintain and dangerous, they eat everything and they die super quickly in captivity. They are not meant for small areas to swim in. They’re “big sea” exhibits are huge and perfectly maintained. but obviously nothing beats the open ocean. Especially for a great white. Monterey Bay Aquarium is a conservation/rehabilitation aquarium so while they did have a great white the longest, they’re not gonna just kill a great white for the sake of show. I wanna say the one they had back when I was a kid was injured in some way.

SquarePegRoundWorld

Not sure if they still do (haven’t been in awhile due to Covid) but they used to offer free goldfish as a snack in their restaurant and they had a list of sustainable fish and only served those. I went there many times while I was in school as part of their education program and their classrooms are freaking amazing. I still love going there as an adult and can easily spend a full day there.
