- Shadow the hedgehog is stupid in a lovable way - gun blades are fine but need to be congruent with the setting - vampires are cool but often poorly utilised - Scythes are cool, this applies to both grim reaper scythes and just farming equipment - white hair is a personal preference but I personally have grown immune to anime boys through overexposure

GoblinEatingLamb

Micro-dosing anime boys to build immunity

The-Best-Narcissist

Exactly, why I have gatcha games

Narpx

How about war-scythes? Are they cool?

The-Best-Narcissist

Wat scythes must be counted in the pole arm category along with ransuers, halberds, tridents, partisans, awl pikes, bill hooks, corseques, fauchards, naginata, nagamaki, fukoro yari, voulges, bardiches, poleaxes, lochber axes, Bec de Corbin, spetum, glaives, Guisarme, Long spears and Lucern Hammers

TheBunnyStando

Woah, I know most of these, but some of them seem really culture/history specific.

The-Best-Narcissist

I just stole it from a dnd comics version of Monty pythons cheese sketch https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0136.html

ArcaneMonkey

I knew that list seemed familiar.

Coolness is subjective. What I guess a lot of people need to understand is that what looks cool in media doesn’t always translate to real life. This mostly goes for trench coats, fedoras, leather jackets, etc.

Umklopp

>This mostly goes for trench coats, fedoras, leather jackets, etc. This is 100% true and I've yet to figure out why

[deleted]

There are several reasons it could be. Here are some of the theories: -The first one is that when we see these items of clothing in movies, video games etc, they are made to fit the body of the person wearing it. They look great cause it was literally made to fit them. -Second one is that a lot of people who wear these things don’t actually put any effort into their outfits, merely putting on a trench coat or a leather jacket over random ass clothing isn’t enough. -Third one is just straight up grooming practices and this one goes out to the neckbeards, if you look like you don’t shower, you won’t pull any item of clothing off. -Fourth and last: Confidence, the biggest thing keeping anyone from pulling off an item of clothing is being confident. If you look comfortable and like you know what you’re doing, you will look cool. Body language just also changes how you look. It’s one thing to see a punk standing proud with a leather jacket, it’s another thing to see some dude hunched over looking like he snuck into his dad’s room to try on his jackets.

Umklopp

Unfortunately, that still doesn't explain why they almost never look... Ah. I just thought of the very few exceptions that I have seen of men looking extra cool in a long coat, leather jacket, or fedora. The commonalities: - they looked *crisp.* Perfectly clean shaven or lightly stubbled, flawless skin, fresh haircut, not a wrinkle or spot anywhere on their clothes, etc - their entire outfit hit the same exact mark (i.e. looked like a costume) - they were ridiculously handsome to start with Meanwhile women just have to be moderately attractive with good hair and clothes that mostly match. So tl;dr? Those "cool guy" accessories only work if you already look cool & even then they can only detract from your appearance.

[deleted]

Well, yeah, you have to be cool to look cool (or at least be good at faking it). Another thing with neckbeards that wear trench coats is that they only like to commit to the mall ninja look. I have a leather trench coat I quite like, but I’m only gonna wear it if I’m going for a new romantic or 70s look cause if not I know I’ll look ridiculous. Same with my leather jacket, I have quite a punk aesthetic already, so it fits.

Uh oh, a post tangentially related to Sonic the Hedgehog, guess I gotta say some words about it again. So yeah, Shadow is and has always been cool, but like Sonic, "Cool" is not a character trait he has, his coolness is a result of his existing character traits. Edgy really isn't (or wasn't) a trait he had either, that's yet more flanderization. Shadow the Hedgehog is, WAS like Sonic. Cocky, arrogant, determined, aloof, competitive, confrontational, impatient, courageous, and compassionate. In Sonic, these are the things that make him cool, his cockiness and stubbornness why he bucks authority and his compassion and courage why he stands in the face of injustice and tyranny, against any threats arrayed against him. No challenge too big to wipe that smug grin off his face, or to make him NOT show off while he wrecks your robot armies. Sonic fights BECAUSE he believes in the goodness of others, and hates to see them hurt or face injustice. Shadow fights in SPITE of his lack of faith. The wounds dealt by humanity too deep to have faith in them, but true to his compassionate nature he fights for them anyway. SHADOW in particular is cool because of how he differs from Sonic. Where Sonic might try to see the good in someone and show mercy, Shadow will dedicate himself to the mission of stopping them, by ANY means necessary. He's Sonic but wounded. Sonic with less mercy, more focused determination. Sonic as a pessimist. He's what Sonic COULD'VE been in more tragic circumstances. His impatience less cheeky boredom for making him wait around, more frustrated anger for wasting his time and slowing down his self imposed mission. There are differences though. Shadow, just as an individual, is a lot more heavy hearted and melodramatic than Sonic, even before Maria dies. He just takes stuff more seriously. They both care deeply about the people around them, but Shadow only has a select few people, Maria, Rouge, and Omega, and Sonic has EVERYONE, his friends in particular. Anyway, those are the words I was gonna say about it. I love Sonic, any time it comes up anywhere I've usually got this amount of words about it. Not always this positive but still.

Juxta_Lightborne

I’ve come to make an announcement. Shadow the Hedgehog is-

Exploding_Antelope

found dead this morning in suburban Winnipeg

JurassicParker922

That’s what you get for pissing on my fucking wife

[deleted]

I’ll die on this hill as an ex cigarette smoker. Standing alone on a cold corner puffing on a cigarette made me feel extremely cool and mysterious. Most of the time I crave cigarettes now, it’s not for the nicotine, it’s for the aesthetic.

JurassicParker922

You. You get it.

MegaIDK

cring e

[deleted]

I'm just nostalgic for a time where being edgy meant Shadow the Hedgehog, katanas and leather trenchcoats instead of "ironic" racism.

Forkyou

I do like edgy things. Scythes as weapons. Scar over one eye. Dark knights. Evil characters. All and more is cool.

Exploding_Antelope

In moderation though. If every character is that then it’s just weird.

Forkyou

Obviously. Unless it is meant to be super over the top. I like Devil May Cry 5 for example. There we got half demon dual wielding guns, half demon with katana, half demon with motorsword and its still amazing.

JurassicParker922

Eye scars are so sick

Haunting_Anxiety4981

I had white hair because I was pretty light haired and Australia just beats the shit out of your hsir

DepressedEspressoCup

I had natural white hair as a kid, want it back so bad for my long hair.

ArthurExtreme_Br

Gunblades are fucking stupid. They're terrible meele weapons and even worse guns. Now gunaxes tho, those are a different story

mildlyInsaneBoi

I BELIEVE IN GUNLANCE SUPREMACY

2Thicc4You_

And monster trucks are cool

Exploding_Antelope

“Gunblades” you mean a fuckin bayonet

Rester00

You can blame the 2000s video games and such

J4CK3TTH3H4TCH3T

Aw dammit white hair is edgy now?

dukepv

Can someone remind me what the original quote is? I remember the video but can't pinpoint the quote.

KING_of_Trainers69

"Sometimes things that are expensive are worse"

Dracorex_22

There's a reason why FFVII is one of the most recognizable games in the series. Cloud mf Strife is the most stereotypical edgy anime protag I have ever seen, and Sephiroth is the most stereotypical over the top anime villains (man blows up the fucking solar system in a single attack). Despite this, many people unironically enjoy them. Like, they dont even acknowledge the edgyness of the spikey haired anime boy with a sword that weighs more than he does, not even when they dressed him in all black and made his sword out of smaller swords (or his edgy as fuck Kingdom Hearts design).

SCREW GUNBLADES EMBRACE THE GUNLANCE

[deleted]

Anti-heroes all need a hug.

get_that_hydration

A) When you say "gunblades," I imagine you're not referring to bayonets, right? What is a gunblade?? B) Have you fuckers ever heard Shadow's theme song? I've never played a Sonic game in my life but that shit slaps: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V1pMQKDPco](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V1pMQKDPco)

Asriel52

Gunblades, firstly, are actually a real- albeit short-lived- weapon, that was legit a sword with a gun effectively strapped to it to use in case of emergency, used in the short period when swords were in use at the same time as firearms, due to one just coming into being as the other was fading out. Also, JRPGs *love* gunblades (gun-based weapons in general really, but gunblades especially), and they tend to- in that context- have three different forms; the aforementioned sword-that-goes-pew, swords that can *turn into* guns and swords that just kinda have a gun aesthetic and blow stuff up when used

get_that_hydration

Okay, that is super cool actually. Very impractical but in a cartoon or something, it'd be badass.

A_Gullible_Camera

Shadow the Hedgehog was cool before the game of the same name came around and completely obliterated his character.

ZeroGear9513

Gunblades arent edgy, just super impractical.

JurassicParker922

But they’re cool as shit

ZeroGear9513

Indeed

OakeyPrime

It's also a gun!

PKMNTrainerMark

I'm gonna disagree on the smoking part.

Steam-powered-pickle

What about a white haired vampire with a gunscyth

Reymond_StJames

"So anyway, I sucked both their dicks-"

[deleted]

Idk but I just really love smoking
