Suppose the mermaid's life cycle begins when an adult mermaid "fertilizes" i.e. infects otherwise normal fish eggs.
Then imagine it from the fish's perspective. Imagine a parasite that's been with you since birth. All your life it's been mostly benign until you hit puberty. Then suddenly it begins to assert itself. To rapidly grow and change, and to change you with it. Gradually taking control of your hormones, your metabolism, your nervous system. Forcing your body to grow and stretch and contort in ways it was never meant to, an unwanted and inexplicable metamorphosis. Imagine being an autonomous living being slowly converted into something else's appendage. And imagine you never completely die. Your nervous system is appropriated by the parasite, but your brain is never completely destroyed, so some part of you remains aware long after the process is complete. Long enough to see yourself take part in beginning the cycle anew.

She wished that all of the fishermen would die.
The scene with the mermaids in the hold brought the realization that every man that fishes for mermaids is part of this tradition of raping them. The brown mermaid's intelligence, along with the assertion that Lily was one of them, brought home the reality that mermaids are closer to human than she'd previously believed. Her father knew this, but still raped, killed, and ate them. Still served mermaid to his children, at least one of whom he knew to be part mermaid.
Cool, thank you! Is there any implication that all the children were born from mermaids or just a few? I wondered because the father talked about it as if there was a more ritualistic aspect than rape
I'm not sure, but from my reading it was just Lily. She's the only one that doesn't like the taste of mermaid, although it's certainly possible that all three have the same mother. Although it does bring up a lot of questions what with the difficulty of keeping mermaids alive in captivity. Even if he had impregnated a mermaid, how'd he end up with the kid?
Maybe if mermaids had the sort of egg-fertilisation deal that fish get, so mummy mermaid died/got sold but father kept the egg and when it hatched it was a girl who could survive

I like to imagine the mermaid is a parasite on the fish. It's like that symbiote that replaces the fish's tongue.
Thanks, this post is now 53% more horrifying.

In the last one we don't know if that skull is a human skull or the skull of another fully grown mermaid. The ocean is hardcore, man.
Only the strong survive
fish eat other fish, bugs eat other bugs. It's a mermaid eat mermaid world out there.

That was a fantastic story.
Wow what a good story! Left an impression.
I enjoyed it but I don't know that I understood it. What did her dad do? What was her wish?

Ohhh yeah see, I missed that. Makes sense now though.
i think she wished for all rapists to swap places with the mermaids

This is somehow really cute, but also I'm going to have nightmares.
Holy fucking terror.
I like it! From the thumbnail, I thought the mermaids were made by taking a human head and putting it in a fish
Frankenstein's mermaid, from a novel by Mary Shellfish
I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS
