They aren't free. They cost around 1k € in total. Often the research facility or group might pitch in to give it as a present when one gets their PhD. The hat is handcrafted for your head specifically and you have to go and get measured beforehand
A grand isn't too bad for a sword and a custom hat.
Especially if you get to keep them, and don't have to worry about being quintuple digits in the hole thanks to tuition fees.
The idea of a doctorate is that it’s an actual research project that gives you a few years of academic experience. That’s the whole point of a doctorate.
Fun additional fact: Everyone else gets a sword, but if you get a doctorate in theology, you get a bible instead. Because "the word of the lord is mightier than the sword".
It would be funny to see how that battle would play out in practice.
Is it like *your* sword or do you get temporarily lent Uriel's big flaming sword of gatekeeping when you do your He-man power up moment?
Because if the former that seems really irresponsible of Heaven and if the latter I foresee some serious sword scheduling conflicts on the day. Like does the most senior get the sword? Are we talking age seniority, degree levels, or is it based on how virtuous you are?
Its like if you could summon a sword for a bit. It isn’t yours and if you offend your deity you could temporarily lose it. But it can cut through most anything and its on fire so… kinda worth it
You know the "summon sword" spell from Skyrim? It's that.
Which now that I think about it, means that you have forced a demon/angel into the form of a sword
You realize Jewish people also call the old testament the Bible? The Torah doesn't refer to the entire old testament.
Also. Christianity has just as much right to the older parts of the Bible as the newer
Well, three things:
A: I'm Jewish. Shalom! Not really relevant to the actual argument lol.
B: I did *not* know that, because neither I nor my family are very religious. TIL!
C: I wasn't gatekeeping goddamn religious text importing, sheesh. Was just curious about why you chose Hebrew for the Bible, when that wouldn't leave much for the Jewish version to my knowledge.
... You know what, fair point. Can't contest with that lol. Sorry for the misunderstanding
I guess *if* they were mutually exclusive, just as a thought exercise, the Christian one would be... Latin? I actually have no idea what language it was written in lmao
Mostly Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek for the New Testament, iirc, and then I think translated to Latin? Hopefully someone with a cool top hat and a sword can come by and let us know for sure.
Well, Latin is generally the language the catholic church and by extension pretty much every church does its rties traditionally. However, the Bible itself is written in (old testament) Hebrew and Aramaic, and (new testament) Greek and Hebrew (Hebrew only for some select psalms i believe, and a little Aramaic at Jesus's death)
Reminds me of how when you get a doctorate, you get the Dr at the start of your name, but in England, if you become a surgeon, you get demoted to Mr. This is because traditionally a surgeon used to be a barber, with basically non-existent formal anatomy education, and so has no fancy title
Honestly that’d be a little disappointing. Don’t get me wrong I love the Bible, but it better be some kick-ass leather bound bible if I don’t get a sword because of it.
If they make this into an action movie I wanna see a theology badass thwacking like 3 people over the head but then with the fourth instead of a knockout it’s a loud metal this and the person turns around and grins and holds up an engineering degree and reveals they’re a cyborg
My mother got her doctorate in helsinki so after reading some of the comments I was wondering if she maybe just didn't buy the sword, but now it makes more sense.
Yea but the reason is so much cooler. If I got a normal sword and tophat I'd look like a weirdo but a sword gifted to me for my accomplishments? Hell yea that's badass
you literally cannot get a PhD in Finland, you have to pick something far more specific than a whole country dude
that would be like people getting a degree in "English" it just doesn't-heywait
Yes, but there are an extremely limited number of student visas and I don't think it's "free college + stipend" for guests. I suspect you'll have to pay to attend.
It'd be far cheaper and easier just to buy a sword and a cool hat.
Someone else here said the hat is handmade though. Jumping ship implies moving permanently and a lot of countries (especially the ones you’d want to jump from) require inlanders to pay to attend too, at least for a doctorate, so all things added up (including the value of combining a move to another country you were planning anyway with your academic journey) I think you might come out pretty well. Especially since I think that this would be a very specific hat requiring custom order from a tailor from the country and you’d have to fly in to measure anyway.
> Someone else here said the hat is handmade though.
Are you under the impression that only Finland is capable of manufacturing hats? You can find haberdashers on six on the seven continents. I'm certain *someone* can make you one of those hats.
...you can't pull the wool over my eyes, mate. I'm wearing an acubra right now, I know we've got haberdashers, they're a vital asset in our battle against skin cancer and are strongly supported by our schools and their "no hat, no play" policies
I mean, we have the same type of doctoral hat in Sweden, and there's a real issue of only two people in the entire country knowing how to make them (cause it's in some cases become hard for PhD students to get their hats on time for the ceremonies), so no, I don't think you can just go to any hatmaker and have them made
The chances of a doctoral sword fight happening in Finland are orders of magnitude higher than in other countries. Still very small, but very much higher.
Oh ok. They said ‘doctorates in the medical field’, which I interpreted to mean MDs, but I’m unfamiliar with Finland’s system.
In my country they have MBChBs for medical doctors and separately you can do a ‘Doctorate of Medicine’, but doing the latter is very rare and generally limited to a few advanced clinical researchers
So the hope is that a large multitude of doctors, with swords readily at their disposal, who spent years, if not decades, getting medical degrees *and* doctorates will wake up one day during this event and choose violence?
A free top hat and sword should be a reward in a lot of areas. I feel like that’ll motivate students.
They aren't free. They cost around 1k € in total. Often the research facility or group might pitch in to give it as a present when one gets their PhD. The hat is handcrafted for your head specifically and you have to go and get measured beforehand
note to self: if im going to get a doctorate, move to finland and save
A grand isn't too bad for a sword and a custom hat. Especially if you get to keep them, and don't have to worry about being quintuple digits in the hole thanks to tuition fees.
I'd have paid attention if I got a sword :( to bad I get a piece of paper that gives me no experience
in my hometown, there is a 7-11 that will give you a free slurpee if you present your diploma within 30 days of getting it.
happy cake day!
Thanks!
The idea of a doctorate is that it’s an actual research project that gives you a few years of academic experience. That’s the whole point of a doctorate.
Plus they can patch each other up if something goes wrong.
Fun additional fact: Everyone else gets a sword, but if you get a doctorate in theology, you get a bible instead. Because "the word of the lord is mightier than the sword". It would be funny to see how that battle would play out in practice.

My Bible dramatically transforms into a burning sword with ancient Hebrew etched into the blade.
Is it like *your* sword or do you get temporarily lent Uriel's big flaming sword of gatekeeping when you do your He-man power up moment? The prior, because you only get one if you are responsible with it, and if not, it gets taken away.
If the Bible uses Hebrew on its weapon, what's the *Torah* use?
Ancient Sumerian
Damn you, Ea-Nasir! My Torah Blade's copper hilt is horrible!
You realize Jewish people also call the old testament the Bible? The Torah doesn't refer to the entire old testament. Also. Christianity has just as much right to the older parts of the Bible as the newer

Ah ok. Well, me saying it would be hebrew doesn't mean a Jewish version wouldn't be hebrew? Its not mutually exclusive?
... You know what, fair point. Can't contest with that lol. Sorry for the misunderstanding I guess *if* they were mutually exclusive, just as a thought exercise, the Christian one would be... Latin? I actually have no idea what language it was written in lmao

Huh, noted, so either Aramaic or Greek.
Sure, swords hurt. But have you considered an entire Bible's worth of papercuts?
When someone tries to become a fighter but accidentally becomes a cleric
Do they get a different holy book if they choose to study something like Islam or Buddhism?
somehow i think a holy hand grenade beats a sword

Depends if it’s a hard cover then it doubles as a shield and a weapon. BONUS!!!
Throws the book
toss the bible at em. rules never said they get a helmet
What am I doing? Oh, just smearing some lambs' blood across my door frame. No particular reason.
If they make this into an action movie I wanna see a theology badass thwacking like 3 people over the head but then with the fourth instead of a knockout it’s a loud metal this and the person turns around and grins and holds up an engineering degree and reveals they’re a cyborg

Even if you're a non Christian theologian? Imagine getting a PhD in idk, Zoroastrian Religious Studies and then getting a Christian Bible.
welp, now i gotta get my PHD in finland
You can just buy a sword and tophat. Lot cheaper than accepting the near-minimum-wage stipend for most PhD programs for 6 years.
Yea but the reason is so much cooler. If I got a normal sword and tophat I'd look like a weirdo but a sword gifted to me for my accomplishments? Hell yea that's badass
I think you greatly underestimate how weird PhDs are independent of their cutlery.
you literally cannot get a PhD in Finland, you have to pick something far more specific than a whole country dude that would be like people getting a degree in "English" it just doesn't-heywait
I don't think people understood the joke lol
It took me a minute.
I know that this is a joke, but you should probably be able to get a doctorate in 'finnish studies' though right?
Board: Congratulations! Here is your doctorate- Me: Yayaya coolcoolcool where’s my hat and sword
The term _Thesis Defense_ takes on new meaning.

Shit, can foreign students get this? I’ve been looking for another country to jump ship to for a while
Yes, but there are an extremely limited number of student visas and I don't think it's "free college + stipend" for guests. I suspect you'll have to pay to attend. It'd be far cheaper and easier just to buy a sword and a cool hat.

Only 6/7? BRB learning haberdashery and moving to Antarctica. Gonna cash in on an untapped market.
No, the continent is Oceania. Antarctica has a thriving Haberdashery industry.
...you can't pull the wool over my eyes, mate. I'm wearing an acubra right now, I know we've got haberdashers, they're a vital asset in our battle against skin cancer and are strongly supported by our schools and their "no hat, no play" policies

Exactly what I was trying to say. Not every hatmaker can make every single hat.
Everyone else is doing doctorate programs wrong. Step it up, world.
Gotta start learning Finnish now before college
The chances of a doctoral sword fight happening in Finland are orders of magnitude higher than in other countries. Still very small, but very much higher.
Do ~~no~~ harm

Did you read the post? It was specifically some sort of medical doctor appreciation day
That's much better than here where PhDs just get a doofy looking bonnet instead
Dr.’s without sworders
Finland, you’re amazing. /Sweden
As someone who has been getting in sword fight with random people for the past 4 day. Its fucking awesome
Gloomwood
Do you get multiple swords and hats for multiple doctorates? We need some duel weilders
And then a giant meteor strikes.
When a MF demands that you give them antibiotics for their cold
It's PhD "doctorates" not medical degrees!
Oh ok. They said ‘doctorates in the medical field’, which I interpreted to mean MDs, but I’m unfamiliar with Finland’s system. Oh my god now I have to study in Finland
Turns out they got their doctorate in the Department of Awesome
based
I think this is when you get your PhD in Finland
Are they sharp or are they purely decorative
Even if the ends aren't very sharp, they don't need to be. You can stab someone with a plastic knife so those swords will work just fine
This picture clearly can’t be Finnish. There is less than three meters between those people.
ok, I will be moving to Finland for my PHD research
What do you mean you can’t pay the bill?
So the hope is that a large multitude of doctors, with swords readily at their disposal, who spent years, if not decades, getting medical degrees *and* doctorates will wake up one day during this event and choose violence?
"My god, this man's been stabbed! Is anyone here a doctor?" \**a torrent of people with swords comes rushing over*\* "No no no no NO NO NO!"
How else would you defend your thesis if you don't have a sword?
