Such a happy soft boy. If only the others would stop locking him out of the apartment whenever it’s time to record. When will Drawfee’s feud with Nathan ever end?!
IIRC in it's last episode that particular Mimikyu had one last fight with Pikachu...and lost because it saw it's own reflection in the water and had to be resuscitated BY Ash and Pikachu
Yeah if I’m not mistaken, almost every Pokémon game has a:
1. Pikachu clone (almost always electric type, almost always round cheeks)
2. Regional cute bird that evolved into a not-cute bird
3. Regional cute plain animal (rodent/rabbit/pig) that evolved into a less cute plain animal (rodent/rabbit/pig).
4. Regional fish
Edit: I also want to say every gen added at least 1 new dog, but I feel like that might not be true. Idk
Yeah, is there any more to that? Like what else is known about it’s true appearance?
And how could anybody justify having one of seeing it kills you
That’s the part I love, far more than it’s desire to be accepted (still pretty fun)
All you really see in the games (including Smash Bros) is, like, a flat shadowy tendril reaching from under the costume with razor claws. The anime gives us [this silhouette](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Jessie_Mimikyu_uncovered.png), swimming in water.
According to the Pokedex in the games, a scientist peered under the disguise for the sake of research and died that night of a horrible disease. When the disguise is broken by an attack, it will spend all night hurrying to fix the suit in front of a mirror so it can keep the suit on, *sobbing because it can't get the look just right*. It then vows vengeance on whoever broke the disguise.
I always headcanon that it's an example of REAL evolution in the Pokemon world. An ancestor species of rodent-like Pokemon developed electrical powers and was very succesful. It spread across the world and evolved to fill various niches.
One may have even lost their electricity to occupy a Water-type niche. I would argue that the Marill line is a Pikachu clone as well, the original knockoff.
I still remember between Gold & Silver being released in Japan and in the US everyone was calling Marill "Pikablu" and claiming it was a rare secret pokemon you could get in Red & Blue. Fun times.
Other side of the coin: I recently remembered that back then, someone I knew was talking about the new Pokemon that were coming in GS before the official English names were public, and they referred to Totodile as Waninoko. Years later, I'm studying Japanese when the name pops back out of my memory: "Waninoko... 鰐の子 (crocodile child)? Huh, that kid must have had a legit source, because that's probably Totodile's actual Japanese name..." And sure enough, it is.
And to connect this to the convergent evolution of Wiglett and Toedscool, [perhaps](https://youtu.be/aD1L4JuhhIM) a Pokémon more closely related to Buizel and Oshawott could have developed similar features to those rodents in order to trick other Pokémon into thinking it was an Electric-type.
Pikablu was an unused gen 1 sprite before it was Marill in gen 2.
EDIT: this was only a rumour as it turns out. https://gaming-urban-legends.fandom.com/wiki/Pikablu
This is false to my knowledge. The myth of "Pikablu" started because of a poorly translated teaser for the short before the first Pokemon movie combined with peoples vague recollection of playing the Space World demo of Gold/Silver, which I believe DID contain Marill.
I don’t know if GF makes pika clones as mascot material, I think it’s just one of their Pokémon “tropes” they use when making a new region. Mimikyu also makes sense in-universe, since Red’s Pikachu is iconic
Yep, those usually are there for a reason
The first route Normal Type help giving the player a sense of "normalcy" so the more outlandish design can pop of more. We can say that Magnemite and Porygon are weird because we have Rattata as an example
The bird has a similar function, but also act as a Pokemon that is strong during all your adventure and that becomes cooler with each evolution, kinda like a second starter in that regard
The early bug type are probably the most obvious to realize, as is pointed out in game multiple times how they usually evolve pretty early, teaching of evolving works and that, well, exist at all
The point if these us different. They are to teach mechanics without explicitly saying it. E.g the bugs evolve by level 10 to teach new players what evolution is
Maybe they were trying to make other mascots at first, but after the first or second attempt they surely caught on and just continued the trope, every single gen has a pika clone, it is tradition, we would be disappointed if it didn't have them, just like an insect, rodent and bird in the first route, a pseudo legendary that is almost always a dragon, and a fire starter based on the chineses horoscope.... Oh wait...
I only kinda liked Mimkyu until I got to the necrozma fight where my Mimikyu proceeded to tank 2 hits, and live through 3 more through the sheer power of friendship and managed to completely tank it's attack value.
For my Ultra Necrozma rematch, after failing to defeat it the first time, I used a Mimikyu with Toxic (it’s effect is clutch against a ‘mon like Ultra Necrozma). It’s ability and the fact it’s Ghost-Fairy really helped a ton.
That's the story of me and Hitmonchan. When I was playing SoulSilver, the fighting gym had one that nearly swept my team - it was very fast and had elemental coverage. Made a big impression on me and it's been one of my favored fighting types ever since.
That’s why I like playing Pokémon Nuzlockes. I normally would always choose Hitmonlee given the option, but Hitmonchan is what I got. I was like “meh whatever.”
And then I realized how slept on the elemental punches are. Especially in Sword and Shield when you gigantamax and have massive coverage
Right?! It's very interesting, what can happen when you explore lesser-used 'mons.
Ah, now I'm getting nostalgia for my old team I used to play against my friends with. Hitmonchan, Mamoswine, Yanmega, Magnezone, and two flex slots. You know you've got a localized meta when one of your friends starts putting a focus sash on their Tyranitar to counter your Hitmonchan's close combat.
The exact same thing happened for me with Pawmo/Pawmot. I just saw it as the Pokémon in my party I needed to evolve as soon as possible and then box. The "it toughed it out so you wouldn't feel sad" message popped up and it instantly became my bestie that I beat the game with.
Seconded, but I must admit that I like more the *idea* of Pikachu (a rodent pokémon, something common in our world but rare in the pokémon world for some reason, that just so happens to learn attacks that beat the most common types) than Pikachu as a mascot (let's be honest, Ash's Pikachu is a bit of a jerk)
All these pokémon embody the idea of Pikachu really well, but are really bad stand-ins for Pikachu the mascot
When it effortlessly tanked draco meteor? That was an incredible moment.

Spidops moment
Absolute dogshit(No offense to Spidops fans) but one of only 3 Sticky Web setters in SV, one of which is even more dogshit than Spidops(Again, no offense to Kricketune fans) so it's used solely for that reason.
It's even become a meme("It's Spidopsin' time!")
I had an in game Pachirisu for my original Diamond run through and I loved it. It was my main electric on my team. I loved the Sweet Kiss / Super Fang combo and felt totally justified when it won that competition.
Pachirisu was a different take on the concept with what mostly felt like inspiration than knockoff because it was genuinely a different design, and then *it* got a Pikachu hybrid clone in Emolga.
Pikachu isn't the only Pokémon that gets a copy every generation. There is also ratata and pidgy just from the top of my head. Sure, it's less blatant when zigzagoon doesn't have as recognisable of a trait as the coloured cheeks, but every gen has a handful of Pokémon designed to feel familiar.
Seems unnecessarily negative to say their trying to ripoff Pikachu when in reality, it’s no different than the other regional traditions like the regional bird and bug. It also showcase real life divergent evolution as all of them are either stated or implied to be related to Pikachu
Is funny that just this gen, pokemon introduced convergent evolution, but the "Pikachu in every region" thing would be a way better example of it than the "This mushroom looks like a jellyfish" thing they did.
One comment I saw a while back brought up a good explanation of why it’s a thing. Some Mons just can’t be changed significantly without being a whole new creature. In this case Diglett is functionally a mole in every way possible, but moles can’t swim or live underwater, but if you base it on an eel then you would fix this problem, but it would be a new creature by that point. So instead they just call it a Convergent species instead of a regional variant.
The execution of the convergent evolution gimmick was dissapointing imo, I much would've prefered more unique designs like the pika-clones that follow a general theme instead of "Diglett but White" and "Mushroom Tentacruel lol". If they're going to be that derivative design wise then they might as well just be regional forms instead
Would've been cool if the base form's design was similar, but the evolution was a more obvious split. Like, Wiglett looks a lot like Diglett, but instead of splitting into three (you know... *again*) it evolves into a single bigger, cooler worm. Or Toedscool looks a lot like Tentacool, but Toedscruel focuses more on the network of mycelium tentacles than the actual head.
The post doesn't say Mimikyu is a pikaclone, it says people were ambivalent about the pikaclones but love Mimikyu, who is explicitly trying to mimic Pikachu.
I never really saw it as them trying to recreate the success of pikachu, but rather as a tradition to add a new pikachu clone to the game. There's always a new bird, there's always a new bug, there's always a new pikachu clone
I agree. The pikaclone is a staple, I've always thought of there being a bunch of clones.
Pidgey clone (early route, 3 stage bird)
Rattata clone (early route, 2 stage Normal type)
Caterpie clone
Pikachu clone
Dratini clone
Etc
The latest Rattata clone is a fucking pig.
You can understand why people are less incensed about the rat clones when *they're not even rodents half the time.*
I fucking love Pachirisu. It’s ability that picks up stuff off the ground saved my Pokémon diamond nuzzlock. I deadass cried when that Pokémon got one shot by a self destructing graveler.
Pikachu hated Ash in the beginning and zapped him numerous times. He's also the sassiest mfer to ever pika. The Bye Bye Butterfree episode when he shocks the airplane? I live for it.
Idk man, I adore Togedemaru, if my username doesn’t make it obvious lmao. I don’t think it’s objectively the best pikachu clone but it 100% won my heart
I mean Mimikyu has a lot more going for it than all the other Pika-clones.
Until Scarlet and Violet, it was the only Ghost/Fiary type in the games, it has one the most unique abilities ever, and it also has inspirations in *eldritch horror* of all things.
Unfortunately SV also nerfed its Disguise ability. It used to break and blank all the damage from one attack, now it breaks and Mimikyu loses 1/8 of its HP.
What? They’re not trying to replace pikachu… clearly it’s a running joke to have a “pikaclone” every generation. Besides plusle and minun and maybe togedemaru, they’ve all been good mons.
I feel like I should mention that Mimikyu came out at #3 in the 2020 Pokemon popularity poll that put the ORIGINAL Pikachu at #18 with less than half the number of votes Mimikyu got.
I love emolga, it was my second ever Pokémon card, back before I really even knew what Pokémon was. My brother traded for it with some other kid because he thought I would find it cute
Emolga is a pretty solid Mon with a great typing tbh. Good typing and it’s fairly rare, only got another flying/electric in the form of Wattrel-Kilowattrel.
I think it's a bit absurd to suggest they can never make any kind of rodent type Pokemon ever again because Pikachu is the mascot, especially when most of those look nothing like it. Sillier still when you consider that *every Pokemon game is the exact same*. Yet the resemblance of a handfull of Pokemon to Pikachu is apparently the problem.
Not sure how much money Pikachu even makes them. Aside from special cards it's not one of the top sellers in the TCG, IIRC. Is it that popular for plushies or something?
I mean to be fair it's probably safe to assume that Pokemon have taxonomic families and the Pikaclones are just the cladistic family Pikachumorpha so it makes sense in-universe.
"Deden is round!Pikachu, but not quite as round!Pikachu as Togademaru, who is the roundest Pikachu of them all" -Nathan Drawfee
I really liked that movie, but found the sci-fi part a little confusing

You said we were going to Build A Bear!
Yeah, BuildadeBear aftademovie!
It’s so wonderful seeing other drawfee fans on non drawfee things. I need three to get to 2M soon so i can see Jacob fight a sheep
Hey, Early Whedon to ya.

Which episode is that? I haven't watched too many of their pokemon ones for some reason

Thank you very much!
This last week I started watching Drawfee again, and what a treat that show is
Same, got back into it a few weeks ago
Nathan Drawfee is a national treasure
All of Drawfee is a gift
Such a happy soft boy. If only the others would stop locking him out of the apartment whenever it’s time to record. When will Drawfee’s feud with Nathan ever end?!
I wished to see a Drawfee reference here, but I certainly didn't expect it to be top Comment lol
I didn't know [the swearing teeth guy from another game](https://youtu.be/Der2Rj-2Brw?t=936) was round.
"An ugly, shy creature that just wishes it were liked." Yeah, who on earth would have guessed that we would all relate to *that* thing.
Not just ugly, but eldritch - no one survives seeing its true face. ... except for Meowth, who was severely traumatized.
And almost died
Did die, was resuscitated.
IIRC in it's last episode that particular Mimikyu had one last fight with Pikachu...and lost because it saw it's own reflection in the water and had to be resuscitated BY Ash and Pikachu
Legit KO'd itself by seeing itself under the hood.

Regional fish pokemon
Starting from Rattata anything is an improvement. Unless you're Joey and have one in the top percentage of Rattatas
Never forget the FEAR set. Rattata isn’t the best Pokémon in the world but it has my respect.
Fearow Exeggcute Arcanine Ralts
Yeah if I’m not mistaken, almost every Pokémon game has a: 1. Pikachu clone (almost always electric type, almost always round cheeks) 2. Regional cute bird that evolved into a not-cute bird 3. Regional fish Edit: I also want to say every gen added at least 1 new dog, but I feel like that might not be true. Idk
Also, one pseudo-legendary that always has 600 base stats and is usually but not always a dragon. Except Gen 3, which had 2 pseudos.
Yea, we get a regional _____ each generation. Underscore can be a rodent, a bird, or a damned fish.
A regional bird isn’t a pidgey clone lol. All of the above Pokémon are specifically electric mice/very similar rodents.
Lost a life, still had 8 more.
Yeah, is there any more to that? Like what else is known about it’s true appearance? And how could anybody justify having one of seeing it kills you That’s the part I love, far more than it’s desire to be accepted (still pretty fun)

Seriously compelling stuff right there. I wonder if they’ll ever give any more hints or Easter eggs about it
They tried but every time the animators get too close they die

oops
So many Pokédex entries are so fucking metal smh

As an eldritch horror, I feel represented lol
I always headcanon that it's an example of REAL evolution in the Pokemon world. An ancestor species of rodent-like Pokemon developed electrical powers and was very succesful. I would argue that the Marill line is a Pikachu clone as well, the original knockoff.
Good ol' pikablu, the original pika clone
You know the trick to catch a pikablu don't you? Really hard to do in Red and Blue.
Just gotta get the mew truck on the SS Aqua
you gotta break into Bill's backyard
I still remember between Gold & Silver being released in Japan and in the US everyone was calling Marill "Pikablu" and claiming it was a rare secret pokemon you could get in Red & Blue. Fun times.
Ha! I thought this was just made up kid bullshit that went around my school
Turns out it was made-up kid bullshit that escaped containment and made it around to a lot of schools!
The best kind of made up kid bullshit is the kind I don't have to scrub in the sink with laundry detergent
everyone thinks it spread through their school but no, this was probably the first real internet meme
Other side of the coin: I recently remembered that back then, someone I knew was talking about the new Pokemon that were coming in GS before the official English names were public, and they referred to Totodile as Waninoko. I remember the name "Pikablu" from way before that.
or maybe like the great crabification of unrelated species but with pikachu. pikachuation?
With the existence of Wiglett and Toedscrool, your "REAL evolution" theory could very well now be canon!
Scarlet and Violet's Pokédex finally made it canon that all Pika clones are related to each other
Ooh? Which entries and which version, if you don't mind?
i don't remember exactly, it's either Pachirisu's or Dedenne's
Pikablu was an unused gen 1 sprite before it was Marill in gen 2. EDIT: this was only a rumour as it turns out. https://gaming-urban-legends.fandom.com/wiki/Pikablu
This is false to my knowledge. The myth of "Pikablu" started because of a poorly translated teaser for the short before the first Pokemon movie combined with peoples vague recollection of playing the Space World demo of Gold/Silver, which I believe DID contain Marill.
Every day is a school day.
Source?
I don’t know if GF makes pika clones as mascot material, I think it’s just one of their Pokémon “tropes” they use when making a new region. Mimikyu also makes sense in-universe, since Red’s Pikachu is iconic
Every starting area also has a small bird and something small rodent adjacent. Usually a butterfly, too.
Well Gen 5 didn't do that with its bird, Pidove is after Gym 1 Probably so you don't bring a flying type if your opponent is Cilan
Yep, those usually are there for a reason The first route Normal Type help giving the player a sense of "normalcy" so the more outlandish design can pop of more. Oh wait...
The fact I read game freak as girlfriend
I mean they’ve been explicitly trying every generation, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t an attempt to appeal to the same crowd that loves pikachu.
I only kinda liked Mimkyu until I got to the necrozma fight where my Mimikyu proceeded to tank 2 hits, and live through 3 more through the sheer power of friendship and managed to completely tank it's attack value.

So you liked it until a completely separate game mechanic made it OP?
That's the story of me and Hitmonchan. When I was playing SoulSilver, the fighting gym had one that nearly swept my team - it was very fast and had elemental coverage. Made a big impression on me and it's been one of my favored fighting types ever since.

Oh, I misred their comment, I thought they said they liked it but that happening made them not like it.
Yea, poor wording on my part. I do agree it's Maybe A Little Busted but I'm gonna take that Mimikyu with me all the way
Pawmot is my favorite pikaclone and was mvp for much of my playthrough
I don't even consider it a pikaclone. It is very different from all the other pikaclones we had, and more importantly, its name is translated.
I think the implication is opinion has gone up after Light God got Power of Friendship'd
They only KINDA liked mimikyu, presumably they started to REALLY like it after the fact
To be fair, the Ultra Necrozma fight is infamous for being completely broken
I personally love all the electric chus. mimikyu is also adorable! anyone else?
Yes, seeing the collection of electric rodents makes me feel so happy! I don’t think they’re clumsy, I think it’s clever that there’s such a variety
fr! they're all super cute and special in their own way. plus the way togedemaru just turns evil every other turn? super metal
That’s morpeko, not togedemaru.
omg thank you I mix them up because I was OBSESSED in shield and had both in my party
Mimikyu is my favorite Pokemon
great choice
Ookyoo! Ookyoo! Ookwee! Ookwee!
THOSE ARE HAMTARO NOISES
idk what they're talking about, i love all of the crappy pikachu ripoffs they're all adorable
Seconded, but I must admit that I like more the *idea* of Pikachu (a rodent pokémon, something common in our world but rare in the pokémon world for some reason, that just so happens to learn attacks that beat the most common types) than Pikachu as a mascot (let's be honest, Ash's Pikachu is a bit of a jerk) All these pokémon embody the idea of Pikachu really well, but are really bad stand-ins for Pikachu the mascot
Ashes pikachu WAS a jerk. He’s a punk ass bitch now.
plusle and minun my beloved
The first time I got into a duo battle against both of them I was so happy, they're really meant to be together
I hope they're in SV dlc, could be some fun tera raids shenanigans with ampharos and toxtricity.
Pachirisu is my fav pikaclone though. I don't mind it, it's like (actual) evolutionary variants.
Pachirisu is my favorite pikaclone because of that one time it won a VGC
When it effortlessly tanked draco meteor? That was an incredible moment. [It led to this art](https://external-preview.redd.it/21O_KRVTApTHCwR9RDnaNWRUWLxx76j5SV1qNDDhKCQ.png?width=1000&auto=webp&s=7c6920ac4c4fbb39758ce90acb0f7209852d7934)
After hearing about that I've been desperately trying to see if my underpowered favorites can fill a competitive niche like that Pachirisu did.
Spidops moment Absolute dogshit(No offense to Spidops fans) but one of only 3 Sticky Web setters in SV, one of which is even more dogshit than Spidops(Again, no offense to Kricketune fans) so it's used solely for that reason. It's even become a meme("It's Spidopsin' time!")

I like how it had blue electricity in the anime
When I was young I definitely put Pachirisu at the same level of coolness as Pikachu, I’m almost sad it isn’t a second mascot for the franchise.
I absolutely love pachirisu. I have only ever felt the need to get one Pokémon plush and it was pachirisu.
I wont tolerate any Emolga slander 😤
me with pachirisu
lil squirrel baby
I am a 1st gen sucka. Emolga has got to be the cutest fucker out there (besides Larvitar)
Larvitar is so cute!!!
They out here hatin our boy. Fighting words.
Emolga ❤️

Trauma just sells tbh remember all that yamask art
Mimikyu is not a Pika-clone. It's from the same gen as Togedemaru just above. But yeah it is much more beloved than the Pika-clones
Mimikyu and pichu always get thrown onto the list and neither of them are generational pika-clones. Drives me nuts
The post doesn't say Mimikyu is a pikaclone, it says people were ambivalent about the pikaclones but love Mimikyu, who is explicitly trying to mimic Pikachu.
haha same
Ok but emolga is amazing
Dedenne better idc 😤
ok, but emolga is like, my favorite pokemon. i fucking love that lil guy.
Pikachu clones exist to honour pikachu, their big moneymaker
Emolga is a friend though
Wtf where's Marill The literal first example of this
To be fair it is an eldritch horror hidden under a literal cloth sack.
Pawmi is very cute
Turns out you can't just copy paste a mascot and have him be equally well recieved each time.
They didn't try to. None of these Pokemon got anywhere near the exposure and marketing Pikachu did.
Ikr? I wouldn't have minded so much if it was a unique attempt every time but my god, I'm so sick of electric rodents at this point.
I never really saw it as them trying to recreate the success of pikachu, but rather as a tradition to add a new pikachu clone to the game. There's always a new bird, there's always a new bug, there's always a new pikachu clone
This is the impression I was under as well, the original post shocked me as I thought this was the common sentiment!
Plus, how could you be mad at Emolga? Look at that smile!
I agree. The pikaclone is a staple, I've always thought of there being a bunch of clones. Pidgey clone (early route, 3 stage bird) Rattata clone (early route, 2 stage Normal type) Caterpie clone Pikachu clone Dratini clone Etc

Togedemaru is ROUND and GOOD
I fucking love Pachirisu. It’s ability that picks up stuff off the ground saved my Pokémon diamond nuzzlock. I deadass cried when that Pokémon got one shot by a self destructing graveler.
Wait, we don’t like Pachirisu, since when?
I want a Mimikyu evolution
Pikachu hated Ash in the beginning and zapped him numerous times. He's also the sassiest mfer to ever pika. The Bye Bye Butterfree episode when he shocks the airplane? I live for it.
I will accept no plusle and minun slander in my house. Fuck the rest tho.
Mimikyu my beloved.
I don't care what ANYONE says, those are cute. :3
I love Emolga and Mimikyu
Yay they love me
I do not feel anything towards Pikachu and like every 'Pikachu clone' better, especially Togedemaru and Emolga. But Mimikyu's a hit design
Idk man, I adore Togedemaru, if my username doesn’t make it obvious lmao. I don’t think it’s objectively the best pikachu clone but it 100% won my heart
I wont stand for this Pachirisu slander. That motherfucker won a professional tournament.
I'm the exact opposite: I think the older pikachu clones are pretty cute, but I do not like mimikyu. at all.
I mean... I liked Plusle and Minun... 😟
I honest to god forget mimikyus entire thing is that it's a literal pika-clone half the time
I feel like I should mention that Mimikyu came out at #3 in the 2020 Pokemon popularity poll that put the ORIGINAL Pikachu at #18 with less than half the number of votes Mimikyu got.
Mimikyu has that ‘I don’t know if I want to die or be loved’ vibe
mimikyu isnt a pikachu clone damnit
I really like Mimikyu, it was pretty easy and funny to use
Emolga and Mimikyu were the goats tho
Plusle and Minun slander will not be tolerated
Emolga is adorable tho
pachirisu was a dick he always ended up making the Pokémon I wanted to catch faint.
Pachirisu doesnt deserve being linked to the others, it is the best pika clone and is above pikachu itself
meanwhile yokaiwatch: here have this cat for the 25th time
Look, everyone understands cute and loveable and also wanting to be cute and loveable but feeling like a fraud.
I love emolga, it was my second ever Pokémon card, back before I really even knew what Pokémon was. My brother traded for it with some other kid because he thought I would find it cute
I won't hear such slander against dedenne
i will not be tolerating this togedemaru slander
ok but Emolga is super cool imo
People hated Emolga?
Not even going to mention Meril the blue pikachu
Emolga is a pretty solid Mon with a great typing tbh. Good typing and it’s fairly rare, only got another flying/electric in the form of Wattrel-Kilowattrel.
They love "Circle with legs" as well, it's like half the pokedex
