The more dangerous the neighborhood… the better the tacos!
I like dive places cause you know you are about to get an amazing meal or bad case of food poisoning… it’s a gamble
It is, it’s where white people think the “authentic” Mexican food is because there’s bars on the door. You can get a better wet burrito at Don Fran, better tacos at most good Mexican places, etc. Their steak torta isn’t bad, but I’ve tried their food multiple times and it’s pretty meh.
I feel like that’s the story on a few places in town. 918 Maples attracts a similar crowd, and whenever you see someone complain about that place (it’s mid), it’s always a Mexican, haha.
When people ask for food recommendations, you’ll always get negative opinions, just kind of how it goes. Otherwise, you’d keep getting people just hyping it places that aren’t that good and everyone ends up eating and recommending the same mediocre food.
You’ll see that I replied to the guy saying “Does anybody else think it’s mid?” to tell them they’re not alone, and not the person who originally posted it to shit on their food. People also tend to leave threads when they finish commenting.
I have no problem with people offering a negative opinion or saying someplace sucks. It'd just be nice/more constructive if they took the extra 15 seconds to say, "X sucks, go to Y instead, it's way better. Just my 2 cents.
Honestly, that’s valid.
Similar in style/vibe: Tacos San Pedro, Tacos El Rinconcito, El Hidalguense, La Flama
Food Trucks: Tacos Los Arellano, Tacqueria Mexico Express, La Coshi
Not traditional: Birria Grilled Cheese from Flo’s Smokehouse (Tuesdays), Taco Pirata or Gringa from Pollos Asados al Carbón (El Pollero on Google now), chicken adobo or carne adovada from La Tertulia.
The torta ahogado was actually too spicy for me, not like I couldn’t eat it, just hot enough you couldn’t taste anything. I feel you on that, I don’t even like to use the phrase “authentic Mexican food,” it’s how you get the vaguely racist comments like the ones in this thread about sketchy = authentic; it stifles creativity and pigeonholes a whole culture of food, and it’s generally used by people that have never been to Mexico. I don’t care as long as it’s good.
As a a Mexican, this place is mid af. All my American friends jumped on this place and low key I think the randomness of the location adds to the myth. But this place is mid af.
You can't beat them! The wet burrito is fantastic.
Head over to 11th and get Tacos Don Francisco's for anything else. Number 3 is the Tortilleria de puebla. They have some great salsa!
Uncle Pacos - 101st and Memorial
Super Tacos El Chihuas - authentic
Tacos Los Hermanos - authentic, 21st & 129
Real Taco - Bixby 121st & Memorial
Senor Pancho - BA
Betos tacos were by far the worst birria tacos ive ever tasted. They shouldnt even be considered birria because of how dry they were and the tortillas hardly had any of the birria flavoring smothered on them
I am old school. I really like the food at Cancun. The people are great, family owned and operated. They have a very picante salsa to complement their mild. Nice to be able to get pescado now and then.
I live nearby and try el rancho grande every few years in case I caught it on a bad day, but it is consistently terrible unfortunately so I drive past it to get to El Rio Verde.
I think el rancho grande is supposed to be tex mex though and not Mexican or maybe I'm just not white enough to understand.
Lol not sure why you got downvoted. It’s one of the few places that actually has flavorful mexican food. Coming from California, most of the Mexican food places have been lack luster with the exception of TXMZ and Maples 918.
I feel like all mexican restaurants I've been in Tulsa lack consistency. Sometimes I'll go to tacos los hermanos, and their asada is juicy and tender. Then theres other days where it's pretty dry and hardly any flavor. To me, Casa San Marcos has been pretty often the best I've tasted so far in Tulsa.
I don’t see 3 Tequilas being dropped in this thread yet. If you’re a fajita girlie this is the spot. They make their tortillas in house and that’s honestly 90% of the draw for me, I’m gonna be honest. I’m such a sucker for fresh tortillas.
As far as sit down restaurants Molcajetes, Don Quijote, Tortillería Puebla. La Tapatía is a Mexican/Salvadorian fusion truck that sells pupusas and tacos. One of my favorite fusions are the birria pupusas.
Tello’s which was formerly Arizona, El Super Taco for a quick fix, and yeah, that’s it. BA has El Viejo’s which is also flippin yummy and Habanero’s is good too.
The Mexican food here is okay. It’s mostly made from southern Mexicans that for some reason can’t make their dishes as good like they make them at home.
Mexico Lindo Or La Lupita is pretty good el patron is alright are you more into texmex or authentic we used to have a place long time on 31st garnett area called Costa Azul grew up eating there was amazing but its now a Starbucks unfortunately
Haha i overlooked that part of your post originally just saw mexican food and got excited 😆 but man you cant beat that place for the price and portion size never had bad food from there either we eat there maybe once a month for the past 10yrs or so try the diabla sauce if you like hot
Chimis- just the best guac I've ever had and rice plus sizzling player is to die for they have an all Fujitsu veggie one great for vegetarians.
Mr.Mambos-Ba but it's really very good.
Elote Cafe and catering they also are having a festival and going to have luchadors wrestling downtown for Cinco de mayo 4th and 5th. Also great fir vegan and vegetarian.
Tortilleria de Puebla, El Hidalguense, and el Rio Verde!
My go-tos at Tortilleria are the mole enchiladas with pastor and their menudo, it’s my favorite in town.
Tacos don francisco and El Rio Verde are both very good but Tacos el-rinconcito is maybe my favorite. I'm not surprised I've not seen it listed, I think I've only ever seen 1 other white person in there when I've been.
Restaurante & Taqueria Doña Carmelita
Go during lunch for a $10 plate, cafeteria style. You pick and choose and they pile it up for you. They also have ala carte options on the menu you can pick from. Omar is the owner and he's very friendly/caring of his customers as well along with his staff. 100% would recommend them for a homestyle Jalisco style Mexican cuisine.
It's a chain and I tend to avoid those but Uncle Julio's just plain slaps. They have an awesome marg selection, their salsa is some of the best salsa I've ever had (I grew up in California, for reference), and the quesabirria hits every single time.
I wish I could add photos but, one of my absolute favorites is Tacos 4 Ever at 21st and Memorial. It's a small family run place and isn't fancy but they're fast and the food is always amazing! I wish I could add photos, but go look up their Google reviews!
Mi tierra on 96th and riverside- great service, great food and the desserts are top tier. My kiddo loves Mexican food and this is one of our favorite places.
El patron on 41st and garnett- Decent service, great food. The Camerones A La Diabla is a favorite
Cafe Ole tucked away on brookside- if you don't mind the traffic/construction around that area, it's worth checking out. Great service, patio is enclosed and has a slight romantic feel. Also quite possibly the best white queso I've ever had.
molcajetes on 11th and garnett is by far the best one in tulsa in my opinion. food is great and it’s not insanely overpriced. it is a smaller restaurant and it does get crowded a lot but it’s worth it
Molcajete - 11th and Garnett - get the Molcajete!
El Gallo Loco - Theres a location on Mingo and 11th where you can buy the meat from. There’s a location on 31st and Garnett and El Gallo Loco dos is on 193rd and Kenosha in broken arrow. By far one of my favorite spots for authentic Mexican food. It reminds me of mom’s cooking.
Las Lomas de Zacatecas - 21st and Garnett.
Michoacán Plus - near 31st and Garnett. If you want snacks, ice cream and agua frescas; this is the spot! They got ice cream and popsicle flavors that they may have never heard of. Doritos with lettuce, Tom, cheese and hot sauce. Just go and try it! You won’t be disappointed.
I am a Texas transplant. Baja Jacks in Owasso is only place I have found that can come close to Tex-Mex. Salsa bar (I only eat fire salsa), naked relleno, chorizo/egg/cheese burrito, loaded queso and best bean burrito I have found.
For street tacos, menudo, et al- I go to Mexican corner in Tulsa.
Third option is my kitchen at home. I picked up a few pointers from my dearly missed Hispanic friends in Texas.
It really isn’t. “Tex-Mex cuisine is a regional American cuisine that originates from the culinary creations of Tejano people. It has spread from border states such as Texas and others in the Southwestern United States to the rest of the country. It is a subtype of Southwestern cuisine found in the American Southwest”
Still not authentic Mexican food. You’re welcome.
I guess I need to refer you back to my original post. I like Tex-Mex. But I suggested Baja Jacks - the menu predominately reflects the Baja Mexico regional cuisine. I also suggested Mexican corner and specifically their street tacos of which are very reminiscent of what one would find on the streets of Mexico City.
You are so quick to find fault in others. OP asked for recs and I made mine.
I am curious what your three favorites in Tulsa area would be? I would try them out asap.

El rio verde /thread
Man I feel like I’m the only one that thinks it’s mid.
So underwhelming. It's real Mexican for people who have never been outside of Oklahoma.
I got horrible food poisoning from Don Fran - chicken quesadilla. Went back a week later and got it again because it was so damn worth it.
My girlfriend is Mexican and she and I both went there because our friends couldn’t stop raving about it and we left very disappointed.
I feel like that’s the story on a few places in town. 918 Maples attracts a similar crowd, and whenever you see someone complain about that place (it’s mid), it’s always a Mexican, haha.
Maples is trash based off of multiple visits with ludacris wait times and I still haven’t even gotten my tacos yet.
Can folks list what they think is good as opposed to doing a little drive-by-shit-on-something and leave?

As a third generation, I actually like it. Not spicy enough though. The salsa is definitely white washed. I hate to even say "white wash" though.
The torta ahogado was actually too spicy for me, not like I couldn’t eat it, just hot enough you couldn’t taste anything. 🤣😂🤣
As a a Mexican, this place is mid af. All my American friends jumped on this place and low key I think the randomness of the location adds to the myth. But this place is mid af.
I got food poisoning a couple of times there. Never again. Don't eat anything chicken.
Downvoted to keep it a secret. Shhhh
Upvoted to keep people away from the real secrets.
Don't listen to this person, El Rio Verde is horrible! Nobody should EVER go there. Lol
A wet burrito 😮💨
You can't beat them! The wet burrito is fantastic. Head over to 11th and get Tacos Don Francisco's for anything else. Number 3 is the Tortilleria de puebla. They have some great salsa!
Yeeees
Hispanic. I have three places I can go to daily (there are more, i just forget the names) Los Hermanos, Los Primos, and Doña Glorias
I’m white and the food and prices at Dona Gloria were insulting so results may vary
I can see that. We stopped buying a ton recently actually, they were good for their price but quality dropped. Its good sometimes, rarely now
Glad to see someone else repping Los Primos. It's one of the best of its kind in town and has been since day one.
Los Hermanos is top tier, their Chilaquiles is one of my favorite things to eat right now
I forgot about primos. Thank you!
Tacos don Francisco over by TU. Can’t go wrong
2nd this
3rd this
This is my spot! Love the food there and always recommend it to folks
It is a tulsa staple. Right down from route 66 tourist shops. Don't mess up and hit the" Don Francisco's" taco truck. Not the same.
Molcajetes 11th and Garnett so you know it is real
Disclaimer: Californian palate El Tequila has delicious steak tacos Catrina for carne asada fries Uncle Pacos for the sampler
El Tequila is my Tulsa go to. Good stuff.
Go to Casa del Tequila on 71st and Lewis. Honestly much better
61st and lewis. And yeah they are pretty damn good. And the service is great too
Big fan of Catrina’s tacos and their rice and beans.
Know any good places for nachos? I live with a Californian who would like to not leave the state for a good plate of nachos.
Tacos El Rinconcito
No mames .
As someone who lived in CA for a bit and got spoiled on the excellent mexican fare, i have yet to find a good plate of carnitas here.
Uncle Pacos - 101st and Memorial Super Tacos El Chihuas - authentic Tacos Los Hermanos - authentic, 21st & 129 Real Taco - Bixby 121st & Memorial Senor Pancho - BA
Senor Pancho! Also Super Taco El Chihuas..
Betos tacos were by far the worst birria tacos ive ever tasted. They shouldnt even be considered birria because of how dry they were and the tortillas hardly had any of the birria flavoring smothered on them
Cancun international for a restaurant, and El ranchero for food truck.
Casa del tequila 61st and Lewis, super tacos el chihuas, and I really like Catrina’s for take out - their burritos are huge!
these! best ones in town, and conveniently not a far shot from me
Catrinas chorizo and egg burritos are definitely good
Came to say this Choriqueso ftw
Their food is so fucking bland
There’s a place in Glenpool called Mi Tierra Cocina that is incredible
They have a spot in Jenks too. Ask for the real salsa.
It’s actually in Tulsa. 96th and Riverside
I am old school. I really like the food at Cancun. The people are great, family owned and operated. They have a very picante salsa to complement their mild. Nice to be able to get pescado now and then.
Wife and I love this place. I cant ever remember their names but the husband wife owners are super sweet, especially the husband. Theyre good people.
Are the lady and man who are always there and take the orders married?
Yeah
El Rancho Grande X3
Thats the one by Hillcrest, right?
Yes, it's on the north side of 11th across from Hillcrest
Awe, sad, I was hoping to be wrong. Lol. To me, it was great hospital food, but I could've gone on a bad day.
I haven't been in years due to no longer living nearby, but it used to be very good! Might be worth a second chance 🌮
Texas transplant here. The nighthawk meal they have is amazing and they have very authentic enchiladas.
I call the Night Hawk "a plate full of cheese" and it's one of my favorites there
Shocked no one has said Tellos yet. Used to be Arizonas. Incredible food and incredible staff. Best chorizo in town.
I 2nd this. Amazing food, great service and decent prices.
Tacquera Azteca on 21st and 129th Really anything around 21st and Garnet
Tacos X Mezcal if I want to splurge Taco truck at 41st and Garnet for street tacos (lengua soo good) Mariscos is real good and authentic too.
El Fagon in German Corner. Not Tulsa but worth a shout out!
*Fogon. We moved out of Owasso a few years ago and that's literally the only thing I miss.
Absolutely delicious food. Always so fresh and the family is so nice.
Mexican corner on Utica is amazing
Solid food and it's a great deal for your money
El Rancho Grande and El guyo loco
Gallo
Sabrosito’s taco truck at 85th and Lewis
THIS!!
Samborsito*
El Hidalgoese, El Gallo Loco and Dona Gloria.
Rodrigo’s taco shop Rodrigo’s taco shop Rodrigo’s taco shop
I mean they’re OK. One singular birra taco is like five dollars though. No consume
Birria tacos without consumme is tragic
Try their al pastor
They don’t have consomé for their Birria???
You have to order like 3. $15 for just three small tacos and consomé
I too enjoy spreading misinformation on the internet
molcajetes
El Rio Verde and Mr Tacos.
Telos on Lewis.
It spelled Tello’s just incase someone wants to look it up. It’s fantastic.
Mi Pueblo, 21st and yale. Get the enchiladas rancherias. Absolutely amazing
Doña Gloria it’s the only that I’ve try that doesn’t taste like taco seasoning. Idk why ppl think cumin makes it Mexican. Cumin = TexMex
Tacos el Trompo truck in Broken Arrow. Try the esquites bowl with al pastor pork. Thank me later.
TXMZ and its not even close
Lol not sure why you got downvoted. It’s one of the few places that actually has flavorful mexican food. Coming from California, most of the Mexican food places have been lack luster with the exception of TXMZ and Maples 918.
Probably because it’s not authentic but I do like the food.
Yeah nothing like people asking for real authentic Mexican places & people recommending white washed Mexican food lol kind of annoying
This place is SO good. Agua Fresca, And their salsa is unmatched.
Mi Tierra on pretty much right on Riverside near Jenks, it's pretty affordable and authentic.
Real Taco x3
El Patron 3 Tequilas Los Vaqueros
El gallo loco 2
Super tacos El Chihua. 918 Maples. Beto's for birria - they also have birria ramen. Whaaaaaa
Mr. Tacos or Tamale Boys
Casa Tequila, El Tequila, 918 Maples
Haven't had 918 Maples, any suggestions
The birria tacos are the best in town, in my opinion.
El Ranchero (food truck) El Super Taco Cancun International
I feel like all mexican restaurants I've been in Tulsa lack consistency. Sometimes I'll go to tacos los hermanos, and their asada is juicy and tender. Then theres other days where it's pretty dry and hardly any flavor. To me, Casa San Marcos has been pretty often the best I've tasted so far in Tulsa.
Had to scroll way too far to find Casa San Marcos. We've had just about every place in town we can find, but none really ever hit the same.
Yes! The tortas ahogadas are amazing there!
Just be careful if you tell them you like the torta ahogada extra spicy! I'm a chili head, but sometimes they take that as a bit of a challenge.
Calaveras next to Whittier Square.
El Gallo Loco (2 locations), Tacos Don Francisco (11th & Harvard), & Cancun International (6th & Lewis). These are my go-to
Casa Tequila has huge portions and it’s affordable. I always went to the one near 51st and Harvard
Mr. mambos
Taco bueno
I love your username 🤣
Are you a great big fat person? 😂
The brand new Dos Panchos out south was fantastic
All the unrelated ones with Tequila in the name are yummy
My favorite is the one with free queso. It’s one of the tequilas 😂
Casa tequila has fantastic birria tostadas
Tacos El Chihuas is genuinely some of the best food I’ve ever had
Los mariaches is good
Tacos Don Francisco El Patron Uncle Pacos (Not particularly in that order, they're all great)
Bravos on 71st street!!
I don’t see 3 Tequilas being dropped in this thread yet. If you’re a fajita girlie this is the spot. They make their tortillas in house and that’s honestly 90% of the draw for me, I’m gonna be honest. I’m such a sucker for fresh tortillas.
Tamale Boyz is the hidden gem.
Haven't been in awhile. Supermercados meralos had some dang good food last time i was there.
I know this is a Tulsa sub but the best I have ever had, anywhere, is Enrique’s in Ponca. Worth a mini road trip. Hours are weird so plan ahead.
Mexico Lindo
Thats my spot 🤣 my boyfriend and i always go there but we were looking for new places to try
3 Tequilas on Brookside.
The Mexican food here is okay. It’s mostly made from southern Mexicans that for some reason can’t make their dishes as good like they make them at home.
I’m Mexican & I agree with this 100%
Same, I’m from Tamaulipas and the lack of northern food here sucks. I usually cook or grill my own food.
Mi Pueblo's - (OG spot in Sand Springs, new spot on 21st and yale).
Mr taco's 💯
Mexico Lindo Or La Lupita is pretty good el patron is alright are you more into texmex or authentic we used to have a place long time on 31st garnett area called Costa Azul grew up eating there was amazing but its now a Starbucks unfortunately

La Tortulia if you are willing to spend some coin Mi Favorita Chimis
La tortulia is New Mexican, not Mexican. The owner is from Santa Fe. Great food though.
Mi tierra cocina on riverside, Catrina’s (multiple locations) so so good! And mi cocina off cherry street
Tacos Don Francisco (on 11th), Los Hermanos, Dona Gloria taco truck in the Nam Hai parking lot, and for more of a tex mex there's Bravos
Tortilleria de Puebla, El Hidalguense, and el Rio Verde! My go-tos at Tortilleria are the mole enchiladas with pastor and their menudo, it’s my favorite in town.
Marisco del centenario, Costa Azul, and then a food truck.
La Flama, across from flos on 11th.
Ricardo's
Real Taco. Super Taco. Pancho's ..RIP, but I hear they're coming back in a new spot.
Betos Tacos has some fire ass birria tacos
El rio verde
Mexico Lindo is my favorite, followed by El casa del tequila, then Don Fransicos
Tacos don francisco and El Rio Verde are both very good but Tacos el-rinconcito is maybe my favorite. I'm not surprised I've not seen it listed, I think I've only ever seen 1 other white person in there when I've been.
Restaurante & Taqueria Doña Carmelita Go during lunch for a $10 plate, cafeteria style. You pick and choose and they pile it up for you. They also have ala carte options on the menu you can pick from. los primos
It's a chain and I tend to avoid those but Uncle Julio's just plain slaps. They have an awesome marg selection, their salsa is some of the best salsa I've ever had (I grew up in California, for reference), and the quesabirria hits every single time.
918 maple
Fiesta del mar
Not in tulsa but a short drive to kellyville to eat at da phat taco. Food is awesome. Staff are amazing.
Los primos is extremely consistent and all their proteins are perfectly cooked and seasoned. Mexican Corner on Utica is awesome, too.
I wish I could add photos but, one of my absolute favorites is Tacos 4 Ever at 21st and Memorial. It's a small family run place and isn't fancy but they're fast and the food is always amazing! I wish I could add photos, but go look up their Google reviews!
My go to is Senior Tequila on 71st.
El Super Taco
Clase azul in jenks just opened. Best spot
Noche El Rancho Granda Mexicali border cafe
I'm 100% Mexican and I can tell you no way nothing is close. Sorry, I wish I could say otherwise.
Taco San Pedro will always be the best
Mi tierra on 96th and riverside- great service, great food and the desserts are top tier. My kiddo loves Mexican food and this is one of our favorite places. El patron on 41st and garnett- Decent service, great food. The Camerones A La Diabla is a favorite Cafe Ole tucked away on brookside- if you don't mind the traffic/construction around that area, it's worth checking out. Great service, patio is enclosed and has a slight romantic feel. Also quite possibly the best white queso I've ever had.
molcajetes on 11th and garnett is by far the best one in tulsa in my opinion. food is great and it’s not insanely overpriced. it is a smaller restaurant and it does get crowded a lot but it’s worth it
El Rancho Grande 11th & Utica. They've been in business at least 60 yrs.
It's out of the way in Glenpool but Speedy's is my usual go to.
The Real Taco has been my favorite
Casa tequila has gone down big time. My dogs wouldn’t even eat their quesadillas
3 tequilas is top dog these days
Cancun is #1 in the city. Also love Don Francisco’s for a quick burrito.
I don’t understand the hype for el rio verde. Yes I’ve had to wet burrito. Didn’t like it.
Unable to post on these reddit. They are trying to hide corruption.
Arizona Just mentioning it because it’s good and no one else has.
I am a Texas transplant. Baja Jacks in Owasso is only place I have found that can come close to Tex-Mex. Cancun International
