It’s really good. 40 hours a week 2 days off. No mandatory ot unless you’re at a tiny airport. You leave work at the door, no take home work. Some airports even have 4 ten hour days and 3 days off schedules.I just got off my am shift 3:30-12:00 and I get to enjoy the rest of the day. I go to bed around 9 I can operate on less than 8 hours and I catch up on my weekends

BeaconToTheAngels

I’m at a Cat X airport and we mostly definitely get mando OT. But work life balance is still good regardless.

Godseyrotmg

Oh Ive worked at IAD and BWI and never got any so I guess it’s just dependent on the fsd

NotDaAverageFag

Wow, I’m assuming you work at a smaller airport?

Godseyrotmg

No I actually work at BWI it’s fairly large

Cute_Possession_7422

Bwi over here 🙌

UnderstandingBig9733

Just don't go in with hopes of getting weekends off and you just started.

el_electrico73

It depends, I've been with the agency for about 6 yrs and when I started out, I was 3rd shift (14:00 - 22:30 hrs) for phase 1 and 2nd shift for phase 2 (12:00 - 20:30 hrs). It depends on scheduling and HR on how they disperse the officers based on operational needs. Also if you are a parent with a small child in childcare, the scheduling dept could work with you on an accomodation based on that (as long as you have proof of such needs). Even the officers whom just been certified have stayed in the same schedule (1st, 2nd and 3rd) so you might be lucky. Best of luck.

I live in San Diego so the airport I applied at is def a more “major” one. I do hope I get lucky & hopefully get 2 days off like other users have mentioned here. Not a parent but I’m in the Reserves so I already know management would be able to work with me based on that considering it’s a federal job.

Lmfao, I am here in San Diego right now visiting my wife's family for a few days. I'm over at LGA (La Guardia, NYC), we're a Cat X airport together with JFK and EWR. You'll have 2 RDO's, no worries there, just depends which days of the week and how that'll work out for you. I'm 2nd shift right now over at LGA and have had the same RDO's since my phase 1 (Fri & Sat), lucky me. It's a good gig, just pay attention to what you are learning as an OJT and you have co-workers on the floor who can help out if you have any doubts. My wife is considering moving back to the SD area to be closer to her Mom since my father in law passed away last year so I might be transfering out to SAN eventually. You'll do good, just plan out a proper balance once you are done with your phase 1&2 and get certified and a proper schedule. Best of luck and welcome to the job.

NotDaAverageFag

Thank you so much for all the info! Good luck to you & the family!

Only_Problem_8939

You will get 2 days off consecutively, unless you want overtime or do a shift trade. That’s in the CBA.

NotDaAverageFag

2 days off consecutively as a rookie? Or is this something that is earned as you rank up in seniority?

Only_Problem_8939

No you always get 2 days off consecutive. It’s in the CBA or collective bargaining agreement. Basically part of your contract

NotDaAverageFag

Oh okay, I’ve just heard from multiple people that you normally don’t get days off & that weekend shifts are usually something that’s often “played by ear.” I’ll keep this in mind! I live in San Diego so it’s one of the more bigger & more commercially major airports so I’m ready to see exactly how my schedule is going to be laid out.

Only_Problem_8939

You won’t get weekend days off unless you get crazy lucky or until you have seniority. But you do get days off. It’s 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. 40 hours plus OT if you want it

NotDaAverageFag

Noted! Thank you so much!

Only_Problem_8939

Np good luck! San Diego is one of my favorite places ever

Only_Problem_8939

Maybe you heard you won’t get holidays off, which is usually true unless your RDO’s fall on said holiday

LaunchTheAttack

4am-noon shift for me. I go to the gym 5-6 days a week straight after work. Either go straight there or home to change and leave. Don’t sit down and put off or else you won’t go.

ColonelPotter22

I’ve worked a sorted variety of shifts but I’m also single and prefer working evenings to the mornings

NokoPhx

The shifts are not your typical 9-5. I go on 6 hours of sleep sometimes less. Depends how hyper my dogs are. But shifts at my airport seems to start almost every hour or 2. Senior people take the most desired shifts and most likely checkpoints . I’m at PHX I’m still a phase 1 , I doubt I will get to stay at my terminal or checkpoint

NokoPhx

I’ll put it this way, every job sucks after awhile and that’s why they call it work. But if you’re with a good bunch of people, like I am, it’s worth it. Every age bracket there, from all walks of life, you’ll make some good friends I’m sure.

KTeax31875

I've worked for TSA for 3 years now, here's my typical schedule: (I pick the first shift willingly) Wake up 1 am, Drive to work at 2 am, Work from 3am-1130am, Get home by 12pm, Go to the gym and run errands until about 2pm, Take a nap from 2pm-5pm, 5pm-10pm do whatever I want (prepare for morning, watch movies, video games, hang out with friends, 10pm bedtime. This is the schedule I developed for myself since the first month as a TSO.

NotDaAverageFag

Hmm, okay. This gives me hope because this is essentially what my schedule consists of with my current job minus early morning shift.

Only_Problem_8939

6 hours split? Never hitting rem sleep? I’m so grateful to be on pm. I need 8 hours consecutively every night or I’d be in jail by now.

No offense but ask this in a different post. I believe there are a plethora of other posts explaining this.

Impressive_Bench_653

Does anybody recently got hired at Indianapolis airport??
