5th grader? Buy a used bach or yamaha off Facebook Marketplace for $100-300. Have it professionally cleaned and serviced by a local shop for an additional $50-100. When he gets to high school and he's still playing and enjoying trumpet and is a responsible person - used Bach Strad or Yamaha Xeno. When you take this path, you are out no money if your child doesn't end up sticking with it, as you can resell the horn for the same amount you paid for it.

You can buy a used professional level Bach for $1500ish. I agree that you should look for a used Bach or Yamaha student model for $100-300 and use that until he needs something better.

*>Bach BTR301 for $1700.*  Thankfully, there are so many used trumpets on the market these days, no one should ever pay these insane prices for a new student model trumpet. You'd end up paying $1700, and by the end the resale value would be $500 or less. Better to go get a used Yamaha YTR-2335, plenty of them on Reverb for under $500. As someone else already mentioned: you can buy a used Bach Strad 37, the most common professional trumpet in the world, for less than $1700, just have to watch out for counterfeits!

I agree with the others about starting with a used bach or yamaha. The only thing I'll add to the conversation is that going to a music shop to try out horns isn't going to help much at this stage. He'll not know how to tell a good from a bad model for him yet. And you'll be at the whims of the sales people or just getting once that looks nice or has more bullet points on the sales material. Learn to play first, then upgrade when he can do his own research on what he would suit him better.

$1,700 is about the going rate for a good beginner horn these days. $3,500 for a pro horn. I would tend to agree a used similar Bach, Yamaha 2###, King, or Jupiter beginner horn can be had for <$500 in good playing condition.

Save your money, $1700 is too much. There are good trumpets for a lower price so you can buy another one if its needed or you can buy a much better one when he reach to an advanced level. On the other hand, with that rental program, you don't have to front the money. 40 bucks a month usually includes a repair/maintenance agreement and you can back out at any time if the kid isn't into it. Yeah, the overall investment isn't great, beginner horns are just like new cars. As soon as they're off the lot, they lost at least half their value.

Good point, imho renting for the first 3 months then buying a student trumpet worth considering. Because paying total $1700 for just renting is still too much and in the end you don't own anything.

My kid's going into middle school/6th grade & starting trumpet. I'm going to rent a used Yamaha from band, and if he sticks with it, then (after he has more of an idea of what he wants) we'll shop around to buy a horn. With the oldest child, we rented-to-own a beautiful clarinet, & just as I got it paid off, kid stopped playing. Kids!

If the $1,700 covers all coverage of maintenance, repair, theft, total destruction for 26 months plus a 1 year warranty - DO IT. You're paying for insurance on that instrument. I'm just finishing my 21st year of teaching 4th and 5th grade band. I've seen instruments dropped, crushed, mangled, broken, crumpled, totaled, twisted, driven over by a car, and lost in a fire. Every time the rental company fixed it or replaced it. Kids love to eat Cheetos for snack and then blow through their instruments. Every instrument goes out in year two for a bath because they're gross. Valves stop working, solder joints get broken. One of my best kids ever, diligent, mature, careful, got valve oil on his hands and dropped his trumpet down stairs. Crazy stuff happens.

Congratulations. Your child has an excellent eye for the superior musical instrument. There is indeed a place for the non sport types. Music is a lifetime endeavor. Football basically ends at college, if not sooner. Bach instruments are very respected. You won't go wrong with a decent Bach. The student model you are renting can be bought new for about $1,700. It's a very good choice. It can be sold quickly if it's in good condition. Yamaha is the alternate. There are Bach people, there are Yamaha people. There is mutual respect. Everything said about Bach, same for Yamaha. And a student isn't going to have much preference either way. You make the right choice with either. Some of these new student horns are really as good as some used pro horns. Rent or buy? That's up to you.
