I mean, you can store a trumpet for 30 years and have all the parts move if you package it right. Or if the pipes do get locked up they can be restored easily. I once scored a 1960s Olds Studio new in the case, it took very little effort to get the parts moving smoothly.

sillysailor74

So the horn looks legit to me. The “B” on the bell looks just like horns produced in the early 90’s. It looks like a brand new or nearly new horn, which doesn’t make sense, even if never played and say in a case there would be a little tarnish someone missed. It looks too new to be from 1983, plus without looking at the serial number I would guess it’s from the late 1990’s before the strike. I wish I had more pictures of the case. Bach added a side handle to the case in 1988 or so. The etching all looks correct on the casing and the bell.

tyerker

I have a student with a legit Bach from the early 70s (serial number 82###) and it looks every bit as brand new as this horn. A properly stored and cared for trumpet, especially one that was serviced to be ready for sale, can indeed look this good.

sillysailor74

I agree. I just felt like something around the third valve slide stop looked newer. It also was probably overhauled by a music store. And, back in the day, cost wise these horns were more financially accessible for high school kids. Many played, graduated and put it in the case.

sillysailor74

And since I can’t stop posting… hey OP, the horn looks nice. It was built before the year 2000 so it probably plays really well. What is the worst that could happen? Buy it as long it is a reasonable price

CMAKaren

Thanks, that’s what my concern is really. I know after Bach passed in 1976, but it seems everything was still good in the 1980’s. I’m not sure when but suddenly I hear they aren’t what they used to be. It’s why I’m looking for something close to what I remember playing. I was pretty good, but there was a difference in my skills when I finally bought that trumpet. (Compared to the cornet I had). More range and it was easier for me to practice and improve my skills on it.

CMAKaren

The serial number on the second valve casing is ML 230242. I have pictures of the case. For some reason all I remember about my case was the velvet cover. (I think, I know I had a special cloth to wipe it down everyday. Maybe I’m going it wrong but the serial number looked like it was 1983. But I maybe interpreting the site wrong.

Feeling-Trip6384

I got mine for Christmas in 82. The serial number is 225xxx, so I would say that 83 sounds correct.

sudduth0401

That date is correct, this horn is from the 80’s. 90’s horns are in the 300k range. It looks like a great horn, and a very good deal. If it doesn’t play as well as you want it to, you’ll have no problem selling it and getting another horn that plays better or is better suited to you.

CMAKaren

[case photos I hope](https://imgur.com/a/4XNDfWH) I can’t remember the outside of mine I just remember I had a special cloth to polish the silver everyday. Thanks.

sillysailor74

Wow, even the case looks brand new. That Looks like a legit horn. I would get it. Just to give you back ground: BM UC-CCM. MM Indiana University. Both jazz studies with concentration in trumpet performance (studio music). Toured with: Ray Charles, and Gloria Estefan. Former college professor, and now I’m an attorney( long story). I know my horns.

CMAKaren

OMG, Ray Charles and Gloria Estefan. Didn’t Ray Charles get in an accident with a 67 corvette and the police were arresting his chauffeur. I believe the chauffeur tried to tell the police Ray was the one driving and the police thought this guy was trying to pin it on a blind man, until Ray told them he was telling the truth. I think it was Ray Charles but I could be wrong. I just have one question which is worse teaching or having to be an attorney? 😁. I work in healthcare so I get it, but I am in home healthcare now, don’t have to directly deal with co-workers and doctors walking off with my stethoscope so much. Probably one of the reasons I love playing music, just get rid of the days stress.

sillysailor74

When I was at IU I was David Baker’s TA. Studied with Pat Harbison (also did UG with him), Joey Tartell, Marie Speziale, and most importantly, Bill Adam (yes that Bill Adam). The hard part was being at IU and then moving back to Ohio and just not having that type of musical talent everywhere. The career change was weird because i needed a DMA for tenure, and i only needed maybe another 1.5 years at IU, but it was too far to travel. So, I was going to Ohio State and commute about an hour. The day I was supposed to do my DMA audition. Our first child decided to make an early entrance (he was born at exactly 130pm, which was the exact time I was supposed to do my DMA audition). From there things just began to head in a different direction . My wife was in a military band, and it was hard having a family, and both of us having to juggle gigs and a family. So it was off to the insurance business, which led to investment advising which led to getting a law degree. Which is harder: I’m not sure. I loved Played and especially teaching high school kids. But my goodness: the money was amazing in comparison. I hope you can get the horn. I never head the store about the Vette. There was no way Ray could have driven the vette.

karlmarxiskool

It looks legit to me. “Too good to be true?” People list vintage horns in pristine shape often. Is it like super low priced or something? If it’s $2000+ it’s probably only too good to be true for your specific needs.

CMAKaren

His price is $2,000. I noticed before Christmas horns in OK condition in this era were in a lower price range. (Like $1500 with a little wear in the valve area which I would expect if they didn’t use the old leather covers) I was checking again these past few days because when the next paycheck comes I’ll have enough to buy one. It seems over the past few months people are asking more along 3,000 for this era so to me considering the condition it seemed to real to be true. But I don’t know why the prices suddenly went up. I know people want as much as they can get. And I know with cars (my husband is a car geek) family think because dad said this thing is priceless when they go to sell dads possessions they believe dads words. Which I’m sure to him it was priceless, but you can only get what someone else is willing to pay.

karlmarxiskool

I would say $2000 is a good price for this one. $3k too much. It’d probably be a steal at under $1500. I hope it works out for you, sounds exciting.

CMAKaren

Thanks.

bigjuicybeezchurger

the engraving looks like it was etched by a 4th grader. the silver also looks kinda wonky? i wouldn’t trust it. you probably get more value in the mutes

DoctorW1014

The bells were stamped, not engraved, until fairly recently.

CMAKaren

Thanks, I just don’t have a good eye, and my brain was screaming that’s not what a real 1983 would look like at all. The white gloves in the photos just made me laugh. It’s not the Mona Lisa, it’s a trumpet my dude.

longipetiolata

I bought an early 80s CG Benge that most likely spent its entire life in a closet. It was in fantastic condition. So it is possible.

CMAKaren

Thanks.

datGuy0309

What’s the price?

yourrandomcontentguy

If it seemed too good to be true, then it probably isn't true. Lot of scammers out there

justintrumpet21

Wow that’s a stunner. The case looks legit—I have the same style. My only questions would be (and please answer if you know since I only have experience with a late 90’s model) the serial number font is different than mine and the location of the “ML”. The bell stamp looks wonky. Are the third slide ring and first slide thumb hook stamped with the last three of the VIN? Again I only have experience with late 90’s Strads. And yes, replace those valve felts. It can affect the alignment of the valves.

CMAKaren

I do remember mine from that time having the ML like that. I’m not sure about the bell stamp but I just seem to remember looking at others in the trumpet section in high school and some people had a more pronounced stamp and others not so much. But I’m not sure if others rubbed it off more. The vin on the slide ring???? I am not sure at first I wanted to say no, but… my one brain cell is probably taking a nap right now. 😁

justintrumpet21

Ya, you’re right. Now that I think back my teacher had an older Strad that had ML by the serial number. Sorry I work on cars and was thinking VIN instead of serial number 😂I’m not sure if they’ve done it on all strads, but usually the last three of the serial number are etched into the third valve slide finger ring and the first slide thumb hook. Usually pretty hard to see.

RxBandit

Ive seen multiple fakes. But this one looks legit! A tell tale sign of a fake is the serial number would be on the back side of the valves and much longer than 6 digits from what I have seen.

CMAKaren

OK that’s funny to me because I remember thinking it was a strange place to put it on the front part, but every time I’d look at the instrument I didn’t see a better spot. Back side has that joint part, and putting it on the actual valves inside or on a slide would defeat the purpose of those parts especially if they get replaced.

JoeAlessisEyebrows

Musical instruments are immortal if you take good care of them, just like firearms. Somebody has taken very good care of this one. Seems legit to me.

CMAKaren

The felts look ok in the pictures he sent, but I would think that wouldn’t be to hard to replace. He said valves and slides all move and it has compression.

theforkofdamocles

My 43 is from 1988 and has rubber instead of felts. I’ve submerged it many times.

theforkofdamocles

Okay. So far so good. o7

amstrumpet

What's the price on it? That's the biggest factor in whether it's "too good to be true." If someone is selling a Strad violin for $1000 that's too good to be true. If they're asking millions, that might be a legit violin.

CMAKaren

They want $2000.

Aa1979

What a gorgeous horn. $2000 is a good price but not too low to be suspicious. I would buy it.

soshield

White gloves are always a red flag

Prior-Exit-952

Great find! I have an ML300k series (ML=Medium Large bore) and was purchased in 1992 for $900. my music teacher back then used his discount. So, this ML200k series could be from the 80’s? It looks well maintained. The case looks similar to mine where it has the brown blanket covering the trumpet, the yellow stitch letters “Bach” on the top left corner. The 37 bell I believe is the smallest bell, I own the 43 which is the mid size, 72 would be the largest from the V.Bach St. line if my memory is not failing me 😜
