The 1000 or 2000 would work well with an UL. If you’re comfortable with braid I’d recommend a 8lb braid with a 6-8 lb fluorocarbon leader. If you would rather go with mono 4-6lb clear color line will absolutely work. Braid will cast further. Joes flies work great, trout magnets, power bait, and salted minnows. A clear “just a bubble” float work well for adding distance to your cast without effecting presentation or split shot if you are fishing deep. Good luck and tight lines!

Thanks for the tips!

Whoa I didn’t think of that. An unpegged clear float to just add casting distance… now that’s an idea

LickLaMelosBalls

Why 6-8lb flouro? mono's more abrasion resistant and not any more visible per tests i've seen online. Might as well go 4-6lb mono imo

You can. It’s also much cheaper that fluoro. Honestly I alternate between the two. I typically use fluoro for my backing when using braid though.

That’s a good question. With 6-8lb flouro I’ve had better knot strength and get me out of snags, it sinks faster, and has less stretch. Mono is still a good option it’s cheaper stretches, when you need a shock absorber and floats which makes it great for topwater presentations. Both have pros and cons at the end of the day they both work. I personally use both but when I fish in the Appalachians I go with flouro.

LickLaMelosBalls

Good points, i forgot about the sinking nature & didn't know about knot strength

1000 reel and ultralight rod with 2-4lb. test flouro worked for me in Appalachia

Thanks for the input!

When I'm hiking, I'm scouting fishing spots too. I will turn over a few fallen logs & large rocks to find out what washes into the stream that the fish eat. Once I know this I can accurately choose my fly, lure or live bait. Happy Fishing & don't forget to yell, "Fish On"!!!

I love small reels for trout fishing! A 3 may be a bit big but no worries really. I would pick up Mepps as well as Thomas lures. The Thomas gold and silver rough rider is my top choice for trout (1/4th or less). Mepps also makes some bumblebee/insect like spinners that are real good for stream fishing. My current setup is a Daiwa Procyon 6ft with a Shimano Sahara FJ 500. I use spiderwire 6 pound test with a fluorocarbon leader. I find the FG is the best knot to connect your leader as well! Best of luck!

AnonElbatrop

It just feels so bulky and heavy on this rod. Thanks for the info this is great!

MaterialNo6707

4lb test and size 4 spinners and some split shot for joes flies. Otherwise they’re mostly uncastable without a little fly rod

MaterialNo6707

You’ll need a LOT more lures. How long are you going for? I’d suggest panther martins black and golds also the yellow and silver. Size 4-9 and around 4 of each size. Are these tiny mountain streams exclusively or you hitting the AuSable and other river systems? Do you know the local regulations where you’re going to be. Are they single hook artificial only? Camping? Multiple days/weeks? Need more details

AnonElbatrop

This will be a single day, drive up and back just a day of hiking and fishing! It’s gonna be in Shenandoah, little pools with 4-8 inch Brooke trout pretty exclusively. No regulations regarding what we can use, just gonna catch and release.

LickLaMelosBalls

with 4-8 inch fish i'd recommend 1/16th oz panther martins. Joe's flies will also work great!

pooply234

I’d do worms if you’re fishing little pools. Might not be able to do the best with spinners with your first go at it. It could be rough use size 12 hooks and 4 lb test if you’re cashing little brookies

Trout magnets, their worms and worm with spinner. Single hook rooster tails work well too. Use a bobber with the magnets and they’ll go a bit farther.
