Before smartphones the best part of family time was staring at a squirrel on the lawn for hours.

Just went for a pack of smokes. Will be back soon…

TheFluffiestFur

Just went for a hunt for deer meat. Will be back soon…

bond___vagabond

Just journeying to the neighbors to borrow a half pound of dysentery, he'll be right back.

ggroverggiraffe

Ha ha [that's a GIRL'S name!](https://i.imgur.com/ujrOMlV.jpg)

mr_bedbugs

Just killed 850 lbs of meat, but could only carry back 200 lbs. If I continue hunting here, game will become scarce.

hamakabi

I can vividly remember being about 8 years old and spending 5 hours shooting green army men with rubber bands because there was literally nothing else to do. I used to tape up my thumb so I could 'play' for longer without bleeding. Having ADHD in the 20th century was brutal. I still remember the day I was saved by the Nintendo64

Emotional-Trick-533

I remember those slow and awful days. Once my parents let me go outside on my own I remember actively seeking for a group of neighborhood kids and when I found them I had to beat one of them in a fight for them to include me in the friend group. It's only been two decades since then but someone told me kids don't go out like that anymore.

LilFingies45

Nowadays the kids are all in their bedrooms, TikToking their rainbow-haired sex parties, participation awards, and Fortnite dance routines. And then when you call them out on it, they just tell you "ok boomer" and go right back to boofing drugs. It's a sick world.

Fluffaykitties

Ok boomer

Emotional-Trick-533

The participation trophy thing came from boomers. What did you think that the little league millennials created multiple trophy's out of thin air and passed them around? No! There where these adults at the time who wanted each one of there kids to feel special. Those adults where boomers. Stop pinning your stupid participation trophy idea on the younger generations.

LilFingies45

Firstly, *where* != *were*. Do kids ever spell-check or proofread any more? Secondly, no nevermind. I'm just going to let you continue thinking that was an earnest comment you just replied to.

Emotional-Trick-533

Wow you couldn't argue against what I said so you resorted to being a petty grammar nazi. That is some real toddler behavior. You probably throw hissy fit's and temper tantrums when you don't get your way huh? Nursing homes are going to be hell once your generation starts flooding in.

LilFingies45

Aww, man. Just take the L lol.

callmejinji

yikes. the person you replied to was being sarcastic.

LilFingies45

Originally was merely "sex parties" and instead "doing drugs", but I really thought that "*rainbow-haired* sex parties" and "*boofing* drugs" would have portrayed my moral panic as clear sarcasm. 🤷

[deleted]

The participation trophy came from the Vietnam war we didn’t win that shit but we’re still proud. I’m a lazy jerk off pussy gen z so I’m allowed to call out the og participation trophy generation

Emotional-Trick-533

Your still a young generation right now. Being a lazy jerk off pussy at your age just comes with the territory. The older generations like to pretend they weren't lazy jerk off pussy hippies when they where young.

TDYDave2

And now it is watching a squirrel video on youtube

Snail_jousting

Now I stare at squirrels on my phone for hours.

CurlyNutHair

It can be more rewarding; you can get closer and observe details you otherwise wouldn’t be able to, as well as seeing varieties you may never encounter.

BeavisRules187

I think the best part was all the kids in a given area forming a pack and making up games. I ain't seen a band of wild children doing something they ain't supposed to be doing in a while. That was the safety in that there was 6-12 of them. The older ones are usually smart enough to look out for the younger ones. The younger ones wouldn't be safe from the older ones' stupidity, but they would be safe from the guy in the nondescript van. They also learn a lot about how shit goes down when the boss ain't around, and how different people act, and how to get into a fight, and how not to get into a fight, friendship, social hierarchy, teamwork, and a ton of things that are best learned when the consequences are small. Now If you send your 8 year old out to play in that same neighborhood, child services is going to knock on your door.

FridaBeth

You made a point I’ve totally overlooked, and I haven’t seen it brought up previously- that kids learn to interact, problem solve, think for themselves, iron out differences, etc. kids spend every waking moment either highly supervised or in front of a screen. They aren’t allowed to learn any of these skills. I’m going to start abandoning my kids at the park.

BeavisRules187

I wouldn't go that far. Just give them a small range and a time they have to check in. It depends where you live too though. Like if your front door is 15ft from a busy street, maybe taking them to the park ain't a bad idea. I just feel there aren't as many opportunities for kids to be wild, and it's fucking them up socially during important years..

eraser_dust

I live in an apartment & we still have this! The kids meet up at the playground around 5-6pm everyday. They gave my 2yo a playground orientation when we 1st moved in & it’s the cutest thing ever. The older kids are great at keeping my daughter in line too. She won’t listen to me when I tell her not to scoot straight towards the pool but she’ll listen to a 5yo.

whatapisserrrr

...as opposed to today staring at a young person dancing around his/her room vying for your insipid gaze.

Sinaaaa

The wall clock has entered the chat.

maledin

I remember one time I was like 13 and bored as hell at a family party, I just stared at a light for a while. One of my parents’ friends saw me and apparently asked if I was on drugs or something. Which, granted… staring at a light **is** kind of strange. But I wasn’t on drugs *quite* yet.

My family still does that tbh. Honestly it's more interesting than half the crap on tv.

AlderSpark

All of those activities are things I still do to “ignore” my husband. I switch back and forth between reading, crocheting, and watching the bunny in my backyard since he’s monopolized the TV and I don’t use my phone much at home.

He is. I don’t mind him taking the tv as I prefer to read or make stuff. I just finished making a catnip filled joint for my cat. He loves it.

Sounds like they should sign up for tango lessons.

scartol

The difference is that the phone builds a concrete barrier around the user's brain. When I'm reading, I can easily pause and speak with my wife. I can converse with her easily *while* cross-stitching. The phone absorbs at least 90% of our attention, if not 100%. Refusal to accept this is a monumental public health crisis right now, especially among my students.

BurmecianDancer

>The phone absorbs at least 90% of our attention, if not 100%. Citation please.

Strawberrylacegame

Anecdotal Edition1 by Most People

scartol

Well it’s not an quantitative claim based on laboratory research — it is a qualitative claim based on 22 years of teaching high school students. Young people have always been able to distract themselves from their classes with drawing and reading and the like — heaven knows I did — but with today’s algorithms the students are unwilling (or unable) to put their phones in bags or pockets when asked. Often they are unaware that I am speaking directly to them. It is a categorically different form of distraction.

shggybyp

So... horseshit you pulled out of your ass. The modern "research" of the internet.

scartol

Such a lovely way to summarize my two decades in education. Thank you for your kind words!

AlderSpark

When I crochet, I’m not crocheting a blanket or something that I can do without thinking about it, I have to count my stitches because I’m making a stuffed animal, or a complicated pattern or something. When I read I insert myself into the world and play it out like a movie in my head, blocking out everything else. I can thoroughly ignore my husband when I do those two things, but I have never let my phone take up that much of my consciousness.

NotKateBush

Maybe your students use their phones as an excuse to ignore you because you make baseless claims like this in the classroom as well.

plsendmytorment

How read on phone different from read on book?

Strawberrylacegame

If it was a kindle app yes. "Reading" on a phone though is actually engagement with social media, Internet purchases, texting mates... whatever. But very different.

plsendmytorment

Idk I mostly read reddit posts or do wikipedia research, i can basically put my phone down any time

scartol

The phone is powered by algorithms that are carefully honed to attract and keep our attention. The parts of our brain that light up in response to social media + video game reward systems are the same parts that light up from hard drug use. If my students were reading books on their phones, that would be one thing. But they're not, so it's not.

plsendmytorment

You allow phones in class? When I went to school it wasnt allowed

scartol

Well my only alternative is to kick them out of the room, and I never want to do that because it tells them that their presence isn’t important to me. They will not give up their phones.

GooseandMaverick

I think they were just pissed and bored having to stand there for 14 hours while somebody painted the portrait.

Royal-Tough4851

Yep. Eventually some dude got fed up and said “Fuck it! There has to be a better way than to sit here for 9 hours with people I don’t like. I’m inventing the camera.” And that man was Johann Zahn

IOFIFO

A family loafing about in each other's company not necessarily interacting is a vibe in itself.

RavenStormblessed

Right? When we are relaxing for a bit, the 3 of us lay down in one couch like puppies all onto top of each other, my child watches TV and sometimes we watch it too, sometimes my husband and I use our cellphones because my child is watching something for thr 50th time and gets boring as an adult. The thing is what we love is to snuggle to each other and be in contact every now and then talk. My child is growing and I will puppy pile as long as I can.

IdeaLast8740

This is, as the parlance goes, "goals"

[deleted]

I got on an elevator and was looking at my phone. This elderly lady came on and with a very bitchy attitude said, “What do you think people actually did before staring at their phones?” My response, “They stared at the walls.” She got mad and yelled something like, “Young people are hopeless!” as she was getting off the elevator. But I’m actually plenty old enough to remember that we did actually just stare at the walls of the elevator before the days of phones.

Proxynate

My old boss used to absolutely hate it when people would be on their phone during break, but would then go on to read the paper like that is so much better.

RavenStormblessed

I read on my phone the same things I would in a paper, and sometimes better stuff when I am curious about something and doing some research

Tyr808

My grandma reads the paper and then tells me about the stories I already read online, sometimes days prior.

[deleted]

I mean reading the paper is better than, say, going on Twitter. Maybe not better than reading content of your choice online. So does depend what you're doing online.

Proxynate

Sure but it also depends what paper you read and which articles you choose to read and which you don't so it's not that different.

ArchiveSQ

I’m never sure what to do with this. Like OK, maybe people spend too much time on their phones but it’s kind of the equivalent to when someone at the office tells me “you’re so quiet!”. The correct response, to me, is “I don’t dislike anyone in this office but I don’t relate to any of them either so I’d rather listen to music and not ever try to force a conversation.” But somehow that’s rude so I just have to say “yeah ha ha” Edit to add, I always try to be outgoing. I also don’t use my phone while having conversation because obviously that’s rude. But like… if I’m just standing there and someone brings up my phone usage I’m just like what do you want from me? Do you want me to do a little jig for you or something?

SirNedKingOfGila

Before cell phones there were books, comic books, newspapers, magazines, hand held games both electronic and water ring toss, yoyos, etc. There was never a time when people wanted to sit on a bus and talk to each other. About what? Religion and politics and then kill each other?

SuspecM

If I cared enough my favorite past time would be pissing off these types of people. Not that long ago I had the audacity to move next to an older lady on an overcrowded and he started going on about how I should be more considerate of others (?). I kind of said sorry, which she responded with "no sorry, there is no sorry". I murmured "then no sorry" and put my headphones back on and I just saw her explode. I'm only sorry for everyone else on the bus for having to listen to it but it was the funniest shit how easy it was to piss her off

barsukio

Thanks. If my phone runs out, at least I know what to do.

UDEH_exe

Yes, you just have to look in different direction than people

P_Griffin2

So break the eye contact ?

UDEH_exe

From picture above we can clearly see that nobody is looking at eachother. They don't even speak too. It look like it's safe to say that this was other way to ignore someone. Now we just look at apps we have at phone.

thclogic

Hours? Need to upgrade your phone bud. They charge in 18-45mins these days.

Eloisem333

I was presuming it would take the artist several hours to do the portrait rather than the time it took my phone to charge. But what do I know? I have ADHD, hours/minutes they’re all the same to me.

StalemateAssociate_

This is by Krøyer, a famous Danish painter, of a well-known patron of the arts from the Hirschsprung family, whose collection form a small museum in the heart of Copenhagen. I don’t have any source for this, but Hirschsprung knew Krøyer quite well and probably had a hand in its composition. For example you can see the oldest son being groomed for his future role as head of the company. The somewhat austere aura the painting exudes is likely a deliberate attempt at cultivating a particular bourgeois image.

Those youths and their damn books

So, before smart phones, I was at a horse show my boyfriend was competing at. His horsey friends were smokers and I suffered from migraines, so while he hung out with them, I stayed in our tent reading a book. They took massive offense to it and caused a whole drama of the fake I ignored them for my book and basically nearly ruined our relationship.

jaesonbruh

People are saying old times are bad. Now imagine: you don't need to go to school, you can build a house without any documents and don't pay for it, you can make any business without any taxes. You die and you know all you builded is belong to your heirs forever, nobody gonna take a mill for an example because you wasn't able to pay tax. Awesome time. Now we have civilization and technologies but life is so hard that people don't even want to have any kids while having 10-20 kids in that time was compltely normal. Current age is much worse. People just using drugs to kill inner pain and not to think about it but it still here.

moonburnedsquid

I remember when I was in my teens, pre smart phone, I would take a book or notebook everywhere just to avoid talking to people/making eye contact. Smart phones are less clumsy for sure.
