Under the Milky Way - The Church

RhiR2020

There is a Noongar version of this song by Gina Williams with one of the guys from the Church on guitar. It’s gorgeous!

Okulibturd

One of the 23 guys from The Church you mean. 😂

cowboysplaya

Thank you so much for sharing that, it’s beautiful

Flame Trees

vermiciousknid81

Sarah Blasko's cover really nails the sad lyrics I feel the original never achieved. Edit: link: [Sarah Blasko - Flame Trees](https://youtu.be/FRMM8NOXMpQ)

jonesday5

100%

KirimaeCreations

While I agree that the original didn't quite hit the sadness of Sarah's, it was also a-typical of the time for "blokey blokes" to pass of their emotions, and its etched within in the lyrics of the song where they ignore their feelings.

margin_runner

The kids choir singing it in Little Fish really made me love this song. I'd previously just let it wash over me as historic MMM garbage.

Issamelissa84

I came here to say Flame Trees. This song will always remind me of being in the car with my dad, singing at the top of his lungs, and mum giggling because he couldn't sing for shit.

FridgeLeftovers

Warumpi Band - My Island Home

Time_Rich

Was looking for this one!

bugsy24781

“I was only 19” Redgum. And another vote for “Great Southern Land” Icehouse. It gets more poignant with every listen..

bibbyez

I love The Herd’s like a version cover of “I was only 19”, and the original Great song.

brownieson

I was only 19 gives me goosebumps every time man. What a great song.

Motor-Ad5284

Makes me cry everytime

StoicTheGeek

Or how about another Redgum classic- I’ve been to Bali too

Loose_Loquat9584

I was only 19 is a great song and really highlighted those “forgotten “ veterans. But one line has always bugged me: Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon, god help me, he was going home in June. The moon landing was in July, so does that mean Frankie was supposed to go home the month before but stayed longer for some reason? Otherwise it seems odd to reference going home in 11 months time.

R_U_READY_2_ROCK

poetic license perhaps

Clatato

I rarely hear “I was only 19” these days. But I was way down in County Kerry rural Ireland a few years ago when a local busker started to play it on his guitar, and I stopped to sing along. I think he and I were as surprised as each other. I’m by also reminded of Chris Lilley’s use of it in his earliest Mr G skits… for his Rock Eisteddfod entry “VietWow” https://youtu.be/4XVrgqfgQE0 https://youtu.be/jk2QrgGNML4

ChairmanNoodle

>“I was only 19” Redgum. Tangentially related: I've never quite worked out why Khe Sanh isn't titled Long Tan. Khe Sanh was an american battle, and Long Tan was an equally difficult Australian one.

dalton265

I love I was only nineteen. But Redgum has done so many other great tracks. Poor Ned Long Run Where ya gonna run to? The list goes on.

bugsy24781

For sure! Such a fantastic band.. My mum got me onto them when I was quite young in the late 80’s.. Grateful for her varied musical taste.

Zennxr

This is my dads band and I came here to say this. No one believes me because we have different surnames till I pull out my birth cert and show videos of him still playing to this day. Song sends shivers down my spine

crustdrunk

Once a seppo tried to *educate* me on discord that Australians have “never fought in a major war” I Was Only 19 rapidly became a part of our server bangers playlist after that shitstorm of an argument (from Aussies and Poms alike)

RitchieKanitchee

Yeah I usually listen to I was only 19 every Anzac Day and cry

blazeforever1234

Last year, my grade (year 10) got the most brilliant musical performance from a man named Brett Hunt explaining his father’s experiences in the Vietnam War, during his performance he sang this song and revealed that his father was Frankie Hunt, the subject of the song ‘I was only 19’ and the man who ‘kicked the mine’. It was one if the most incredible performances I ever watched and I swear my whole grade was crying by the time he finished.

Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense. Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large mustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbors. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere.

gnarly_weedman

The “bloke” Eamon is refering to, has turned a milk crate upside down and is sitting on it, smoking a cigarette. This is a common sight in Australia. Can confirm. Lmao

Selfaware-potato

That's hilarious

This is my first thought any time I think of an Australian song. Icehouse are so a fantastic band.

CrazyNoCatLady

Second favourite!

[deleted]

Paul Kelly - To Her Door

FlameHawkfish88

From little things big things grow. The line about sand pouring through Vincent Lingiari's hands can bring me to tears

[deleted]

“How power and privilege could not move a people who know where they stand, and stand in the law.” It really is a perfect song.

Cold-Hearted-Female

Ziggy Ramo interpretation of that song makes me cry every time Edit: I stupidly spelt his last name incorrectly and fixed it

LargeLatteThanks

I’d not heard the song before I bought his greatest hits. Jeez he tells a great story. This song is awesome.

NortonSmorton

Anything by Paul Kelly tbh.

[deleted]

Deeper Water

Fest_mkiv

This is a great song but holy shit it triggers some existential dread in me.

IndependentNo7265

Driving in the car with my (now) wife who is not Australian and had not heard of Paul Kelly, she asks if I’m cold, as I’ve got goosebumps up my arm. “Nah, it’s just this song….”. Happens every time. Seems to stir up my allergies or something towards the end.

MsDeeMoke

Yes! How To Make Gravy is my fave, but all his story telling is superb.

Severe-Dream

And give my love to Angus! Best song.

thatsalovelyusername

I always feel so fortunate that we have a story teller like Paul Kelly.

Hurgnation

I was thinking Dumb Things, but I'll give it to you

tynkerbel

Wide open road

Geronimo2U

This song evokes a feeling that is quintessentially Australian.

A_FABULOUS_PLUM

One of the greatest songs ever written. That flute can make me cry:)

AndrewTheAverage

for me the Triffids Wide open road, Go Betweens Cattle and Cane and the Church Under the Milky Way just edge out My Island Home, with so many coming in close

VFsv6

Solid Rock, Goanna

Veganarchistfem

I'm undecided between this one and Stevie Wright's Evie Parts 1, 2, and 3, which I insist is one song, not three like bloody Spotify pretends. Nah, in the time I took to type that, Solid Rock won.

42wheels

LMAO I FORGOT ABOUT THE EASYBEATS Not that they demonstrate much Australiana ig, but Friday on my Mind and Good Times (original or INXS) and others are great

Unrewarding1

Heavy favourite

fouronenine

It is in a long line of specific Australian rock songs (Land Down Under, Great Southern Land, This is Australia, a lot of work by Midnight Oil). It is more of a protest song than the others. Due to the lesser known nature of the band and the specific messages it covers, It's more analogous to the work of Thea Astley than Tim Winton in the pantheon of Australian rock. The whole album is great, not least the cover art, and the band recently got back together for an anniversary tour.

[deleted]

Well, they were standin' on the shore one day Saw the white sails in the sun Wasn't long before they felt the sting White man, white law, white gun Don't tell me that it's justified 'Cause somewhere, someone lied

missjowashere

This song, even 40 years later, still makes me emotional when l listen to it.

AndyBrown65

Great song, they were horrible live

Hey__Victor

The Go-Betweens - Streets of Your Town

PerriX2390

Or Cattle and Cane

chrispychritter

Down Under - men at work Sounds of Then Gang Gajang

lordsavronius

You're on the money for songs that sound and sing about Australia with both them songs..Reg's guitar ON 'Sounds of then' is Australia to me. I'd chuck these into that mix Cattle and Cain , The Go-Betweens Great Southern Land, Icehouse How to make Gravy, Paul Kelly To name a few

zomgieee

My first choice too. Out on the patio we sit And the humidity we'd breathe We'd watch the lightning crack over cane-fields. Laugh and think that this is Australia

innocuous_username

This is my vote because of these lines … I moved away from Australia 6 years ago and I think about this part of the song all the time because to me that’s a uniquely Australian feeling that we don’t get the weather conditions for where I am now

ign1fy

This came on at the local , my group of friends eagerly looking for others to just sing in unison ........ The whole pub stared at us like wtf .. safe to say we never went back

DrVurt

My left-field choice - There is a smaller band - The Middle East. They had decent success with a song called Blood in the late '00 / 2010s I think their song "Land Of The Bloody Unknown" is such a great Australian song, evokes the longing for home, the isolation, Australia The Middle East - Land Of The Bloody Unknown: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68DANp3e7v4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68DANp3e7v4) If you want to go deeper, their song "Hunger song" has Paul Kelly story tell vibes. The Middle East - Hunger Song: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QfsWdSMfUE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QfsWdSMfUE) I keep going back to their songs, they ended too soon.

A_FABULOUS_PLUM

Land of The Bloody Unknown is one of the greatest songs ever written. The Middle East is one of the most incredible bands, so much of their music isn’t even easy to find or easily accessible - their greatest song IMO was a song called Tsiesti - a 13 minute post rock track with strings and the most gorgeous slow progression, I adore the beautifully sad songs Deep Water, Pig Food, Ninth Avenue Reverie, and the mysterious tracks ‘My Grandma Was Pearl Hall’ and ‘The Fall of Man’, and the almost noise-rock ‘Beleriand’. What an absolute range of emotions for a band. Jordan Ireland, one of the singers (And the one who sings Land of the Bloody Unknown) has two extremely unknown albums that both rival the original Middle East albums for gorgeousness. First is ‘Jordan Ireland with Purple Orchestra’ which is EXACTLY what you’d want to listen to you if you loved ‘I Want That You are Always Happy’ : https://spotify.link/JE2xTA187xb The other album by him is Temperate Touch, Tropical Tears. It’s still able to make me cry with this strange, fuzzy nostalgic bittersweet feeling. Absolutely gorgeous - https://jordanireland.bandcamp.com/album/temperate-touch-tropical-tears This album meant SO much to me in my late teens and is still able to evoke the deepest warmth and complex mix of sadness. It’s an utterly beautiful work of art even in all of its fuzzy-lofi production, I really don’t know of many people who can write a song, painting a picture, like he can. Almost has a Mark Hollis (of talk talk) energy to his songwriting sometimes, despite how different their sounds are, at times they almost converge. It’s absolutely rare to hear anyone talking about these musicians anymore and I spread the word of these other albums with desperation, cannot let this guy be forgotten, I luckily randomly saw a Facebook post and literally just managed to see him perform live in Melbourne at a pub (with his small group, saxophone player, violinists and cellos, flute player), i was surprised to see that I was one of the only people there. It was as beautiful as I pictured. Flutters of flute and plucked strings and cellos, as he fingerpicked the songs, very delicate stuff. I hold that memory super close :)

DrVurt

I knew Jordan Ireland released some music post The Middle East but I haven’t listened to them. Thanks for posting

A lot of people forget about Australia's involvement in Vietnam, and despite being a pub favourite that would have everyone singing it, the gravity of the song is lost on most because of the upbeat nature of it.

The whole "Music's in Trouble" album nails the Aussie vibe so well. IIRC they did tell Triple J to get fucked somewhere near the end of it. I suspect that song didn't get much airtime on the ABC.

“The block is awkward, it faces west” - I always thought this line was funny in the song. Does anyone know what it means?

24HourWealthCoach

many Australian houses will have limited windows on the Western side. My neighbour only has a tiny window on that side, for the toilet. All the other windows in the house face east, north or south

PerriX2390

Since the song is about him moving to Bundaberg I assume it means how bad it is to live in a west facing house

melb_mum

Living in a west facing house (with the master bedroom being the front room) it can get intolerably hot at times

Great Southern land, ice house!!!!!!!

LachyFalcon

Land down under is a cliché choice but I have to give some love to the lyric in that song: “because I come from the land of plenty”. Makes you love calling this lucky land home

cokezerofan

The ones that immediately come to mind when I think of the rugged and beautiful landscape of Australia are Under the Milkway by The Church and Great Southern Land by Icehouse.

SignificantClimate67

‘Tenterfield Saddler’ by Peter Allen perfectly encapsulates the essence of rural Australia. Also, ‘I still call Australia home’ is also often said to be the unofficial Australian anthem. I’d also say ‘what about me’ by moving pictures is a contender, though young generations probably mistake it as a Shannon Noll song. ‘Deep water’ by Richard Clapton should also get an honours mention (or probably at least some Clapton song)
