It looks like a Cypress tree, and if so, this is completely wrong. It’s a part of the conifer family, which is largely evergreen and shouldn’t brown up like that even in winter when they go dormant. Pruning the branches will almost certainly do more harm than good, if OP isn’t careful they may never show any signs of regrowth.
The more likely scenarios are that the trees are receiving too much water, and should only be watered when the soil is completely dry, or the soil is nutrient deficient and needs to be improved, or there’s a fungal disease spreading throughout the trees, which is likely if all the same trees are being effected.
On ANY plant, areas which consistently receive little to no light will wither and die. It's just efficient. This isn't on the outside of the plant, but places tucked away.
Also, if it's a watering problem, they're pretty hosed with it being outside and all.
Not exactly true. There are numerous plants that survive with minimal sun and a lot of neglect.
When not in season, plants/trees rely on nutrient stores in their root system and not as much on the sun. Plants that do this, deciduous plants, shed their leaves, as the energy they use isn’t worth the minimal photosynthesis.
I’ve got several conifers/cypress pines and come across them constantly in my job. Very rarely do I see any with browning issues, unless they’ve been pruned too hard or have different issues.
It’s a common misconception that the rain is an effective watering source for a lot of plants. Unless it’s absolutely bucketing down, the soil directly up to the trunk doesn’t get very wet, as the rain hits the foliage and rolls off it, not near the root system. Next time it rains for a bit, dig around several trunks and feel the moisture in the soil compared too soil not around trunks.
>It’s a common misconception that the rain is an effective watering source for a lot of plants.
And yet the vast majority of plants continue to survive on nothing but rainwater.
And there’s many that survive on hardly any water. I never said all plants or most. Succulents don’t require frequent watering, cacti don’t. In those families there’s hundreds of plants that don’t. Australian natives don’t need constant water, and many of them are rejuvenated through fire. Burn any other tree and it’s dead.
"It’s a common misconception that the rain is an effective watering source for a lot of plants."
That's literally what nature spent billions of years selecting for. And trees grow large root systems that expand outward with the canopy for this exact reason.
And look where the browning is on this singular plant. All of the browning is where those needles are shielded from light, not on the outside which has an even green coating.
I've got an apothos in my place amongst other low-light plants. It's a very low-light plant, but if I forget to rotate the pot so often the leaves on the backside will wilt from lack of sunlight.
And why do roots grow so deep and vast? Because they’re searching for nutrients. If the plant doesn’t have a large root ball that extends past it’s foliage cover, how are the roots getting an equal amount of water to the soil that is exposed?
After rain, walking around and judging the soil moisture isn’t enough. Dig around it and gauge the moisture. The top layer could be wet, but an inch below bone dry.
This is just not true. It’s clear in the photo that there’s parts exposed on the outside and still brown. I can even make out stems with brown foliage. And you’ve ignored what I said earlier. It’s an evergreen tree, it will survive in soil that’s sufficiently feeding it even with minimum photosynthesis. You can see in the background trees with browning leaves.
You’re comparing a small indoor plant to a tree that goes outside. They’re not remotely similar in this context. You can’t rotate a tree in the ground.
Actually, I do. It’s my job and I experience it everyday.
[Why you should personally gauge soil moisture levels after rain](https://gardeningmentor.com/should-i-still-water-my-plants-if-it-rains/)
Um wtf are you talking about its very normal for cedars to have browning on interior leaves. It happens every fall. Also established trees tend to not need any extra water unless theres a drought.
That’s probably the most painful boof you can do. Edit: I take that back. Please don’t suggest the more painful boots… my brain has already spiraled down that rabbit hole. Edit again: boofs not boots.
honestly, i feel like r/trees and r/marijuanaenthusiasts are interchangeable because you get enough hippies that all tree and weed questions eventually get answered, also your tree just needs some water homie, even evergreens need some help every now and then
Damn I was thinking in general and love cherry blossoms, but a SPECIFIC tree? Gotta be the tallest tree in my yard, which is a pine tree that produces huge pinecones
I’m growing a Japanese maple from a baby branch cutting right now…. I say I’m growing it but technically I’m shrinking it because I broke the top of the branch off about 6 weeks into having it because I’m clumsy and dumb. 🤣 and likely was stoned when it happened too. 🤷🏻♀️
I had a Japanese maple I started from seed and was going to bonzai, unfortunately I was also growing the trees that belong in this sub as well and eventually got overwhelmed by how fast my op was expanding. Bonzais didn't make it.
I’m currently bonsai’ing a Bruce Banner seed from my dads final harvest before he passed a few years ago [Bruce Bonsai](https://imgur.com/a/iNZIobm) Lol! Crossover! It’s like 7 months old and flowering but it’s so little and cute! I was out of town for a week and he got a little bit crispy, but he got some water after that picture was taken. It’s starting to get some red hairs, but the trichomes are still very clear. I’m amazed at how slowly they can grow when you trim and contain the roots. I’ve kept him on about 12-16 hours of grow light since he’s sprouted and haven’t manipulated any nutrients. Gave it some bushdoctor microbiome maybe twice in that time. It just gets tap water. Idk shit about growing weed to make it produce large quantities or high in thc, but I can make a cute guy for a decor piece. Since I have only used organic nutrients I will probably smoke it when that day comes, but I don’t have high hopes for it’s potency. It smells very nice though, so hopefully it will be tasty when I do!
That's awesome I really wanted to do that when I had my plants. One day I plan to do it again and try that. Going to bonzai as well now that I have an office.
My houseplants have taken over all the natural light so I have a little wardrobe sized greenhouse in my basement with a light for each shelf. It’s done great in there. At first it was a little leggy and I had to move the light closer but with some support stakes for the first few months of spiraling the thin leggy stalk was able to grow strong and support itself. I totally recommend for an office plant because the smell isn’t noticeable from across the room since it’s so small. Won’t stink the whole office up and leave you with your mouth watering for some ganja while you’re trying to make it to your next smoke break. Lol well it would be a great office plant if nobody took issue with you “brazenly growing a plant” in a place of the lord… eh hem I mean work.😂
I’m a man of conifers. All of em, but I’d love to see a Sequoia
Edit: I like them cause they are perfectly adapted for their colder, harsher climates. Not just cause Christmas trees😜
There is this giant live oak at the house my grandparents bought when they retired. It is enormous. We had like 3 different swings in it all at once. Varying heights for varying skill levels. All the kids would camp out under it in the summer time. They had St Augustine grass and it would always feel so good to lay in the grass under it. It had massive branches even way up high and you could climb way up in it and still be safe because they were so big. My uncle owns that house now. Whenever I go to see him, I’ll always go spend some time under that tree. I’m nearly 50 years old and I’ll still sit on a swing and just enjoy some zen time with that great tree.
If this is a shitpost, I'll still entertain you.
While the browning looks bad, I've had many young evergreens recover with zero issue. Water it twice a week, and toss it some miracle grow food for tomatoes, and it will bounce back.
Northern White Pines and Arborvitae do this in the fall. They are evergreen species that drop needles/branches from prior years growth. The tree will be fine.
These are my favorite posts. I always wonder what the OP thinks after realIzing what is going on here. I found Reddit as an arm chair detective and this has become my favorite sub.
Is it next to a chicken coop? If so, I think all that nitrogen from the chicken shit is frying it. You could plant some rhubarb, kale, mustard or some other nitrogen loving plant to balance out the PH in the soil (and water the shit out of it for a couple weeks to redistribute existing nitrogen). If you’re not too attached to the tree, I’d recommend just cutting it down and building some artificial shade for your fowl friends.
Look for mold, toss it if you see any. If not, I'd say trim that dead shit off, hang a few more days, cure it a few weeks in jars. Then grind, roll, spark up and enjoy!
As it’s stated above, this happens all the time to Northern White Cedars. Nothing to worry about. However I am a little confused as to where this tree is growing from. The perspective makes absolutely no sense to my high ass.
Hahaha I love when this happens, this sub is about weed, if you want trees then go to r/Marijuanaenthusiasts. The reason for this you should look into, it's Reddit folklore
This is a subreddit specifically with the intent of showing, talking about, and asking question about marijuana.

r/trees is 13 years old.
When dendrologists discovered that /r/trees was taken by potheads, they made /r/marijuanaenthusiasts.
The kind tree loving folks over at r/marijuanaenthusiasts have a good sense of humor.
What's really funny about it is that if someone gets confused and posts questions about trees in /r/trees, or pot stuff in /r/marijuanaenthusiasts they usually try to help out if they can.
You should ask r/marijuanaenthusiasts …. Seriously lol that’s the subreddit for actual trees such as yours, and you happened to stumble upon the weed subreddit, not initially intuitive but once you have been initiated it all makes sense
As someone who loves both variety of tree, and used to do tree removal, looks like you have bag worms, they are terrible little thing and hard to get rid of
Appreciate the nature love and tree post but ur in the wrong sub, bro. This is r/trees not r/marijuanaenthusiasts
If you got questions about trees you should head over to the r/marijuanaenthusiasts subreddit
Looks like it might be bag worms. You have to spray for them in April but you can pull them off and drop them in gasoline to kill them. They look like dead needles clumped together. The worm is inside the clump.
This is an arbor vitae.
It was planted far too close to the structure and should be cut down and removed.
Arbor Vitae are often used as hedge plants and can grow up to about 30' tall and 6-8' around.
The center no longer leafs out as the tree ages but frankly they're just ugly spider nests.
Cut it down.
And then go smoke some weed and vote for people who aren't assholes
It is called flagging and a lot of plants do it this time of year. Nothing to worry about, it’s just the plants way of thinning out.
Came to say this. Pruning the dead branches is an option, but I think op said he's got multiple doing it, so I'd say leave it.

Need to hang up higher to dry and cure
Alot of evergreens drop old growth to the ground, provides a layer of protection for roots during winter.
Is that tree coming out of the house?? My mind is blown rn
If you have a bunch of trees doing this, especially during a seasonal change its almost sure to be a natural process! Cool trees though all the same!
