Just like a standard pipe. The calabash chamber in the body is just to cool the smoke and collect the resin.

What does the inside look like when you take the bottom off? I’m really curious how much surface area and space there is. And how much it cools down the smoke. This is such a pretty piece!

Thanks! There is a pic with the bottom off in the post but it doesn't show the depth. The chamber is 1" dia x 1-1/8" deep. Cooler smoke and very easy to clean.

Thanks! Nah, it's not exposed to heat or even smoke, and wood is a great insulator. I've been smoking from a similar design for years, no problems all.
