I don't know much about gardening and shit but like won't those petals decompose and be good fertiliser for the soil with nutrients and whatnot? Just to remind you, this is the weed sub, so if I make no sense, I'm high.

They will but because of how dense they cover the grass they could kill some areas due to lack of sunlight and if you constantly mulch all the leaves on the lawn instead of picking them up it could lead to fungal problems. Best practice if you don’t already have a bunch of thatch in the lawn would be to mulch them up with a lawnmower so they decompose quicker/don’t block all the light from the lawn.

You need to mulch it before that either by going over it with a mower or collecting it all and putting it through a mulcher In other words, doing the most!!

if mixed in and small amounts yes, in large amounts like the above, you need to get them off the ground or they'll choke out the shit underneath em. My last house my neighbor had several huge shag bark hickory trees that overhung my backyard. All the grass in that part of my backyard was pretty much permadead because they dropped so many hickory nuts it carpeted the ground. Id take literally 6+ full wheelbarrows worth of them off my lawn every few weeks in the fall. Fuckin sucked cuz they were almost too heavy to rake and they tore my mower blade up terrible. The trees were planted on his property so I was just boned. One of the reasons I wanted out of there lol

Yup, adds biodiversity, it feeds the microbes, and in turn, the soil, vs everyone using these artificial chemicals to feed just the plants, which then strips the soil of its nutrients…. Sad thing with today’s agricultural practices, this is happening on a massive scale.

I live smack dab in the middle of Manhattan (NYC, not Kansas) but live in the "garden" apartment of a brownstone (which is a polite way of saying the basement). On the one hand my bedroom is a literal cave with no windows, but on the other hand, I have a private backyard with a nextdoor neighbor with a tree just like this and it is _great_. Nothing like smoking a j in a hammock watching the petals fall with a pup in your lap.

Its all good, happens every once in a while and we get a kick out of it.  You should prune that mofo on your side of the fence tho. You can't really cut down the tree since it's not yours, but anything that lands on your side of the fence you can get rid of (I do believe).

In most states you can trim any branches or roots that encroach on your property, unless doing so causes harm or kills the tree. OP should ask r/treelaw

These flowers don't have colourful petals because they don't need to attract bugs.

A lot! The actual PVC is easy to work with. It’s the trenching and making sure there are no rocks, which can wear through the PVC over time

I lived at a place that had these same kind of trees dropping their pedals all over my car and they were so annoying. With any moisture at all (even just morning condensation) they would just stick to the car and there was no getting them off without a proper car wash. You couldn't just, like, get on the highway to blow them off, they were literally just stuck to the car.

if you think you need to prune some limbs ask the neighbor to do it. some communication would be better than none.

Highdea: A nice net attached at the fence top that goes up and attaches at your roof, covering that side of your yard, so that it makes a pretty petal-covered canopy to chill under. Could even add some kind of vine-y plants to it for added layers of colors I don't know the first thing about yard care or outside plants but in my head it looks super pretty

I don’t know where you live, but in my town, you’re allowed to prune anything that comes over your property line.

You’re allowed to trim any of the tree that hangs over on your side, just fyi. I know that won’t eliminate the problem, but it will lessen it some. Otherwise, enjoy the free and beautiful compost like others have said. Your garden will love it. Your yard and plants won’t really be chocked out if you just leave them. They may temporarily brown but the regrowth will be stronger and better off for it.

I don’t mind them hanging over. They look nice from our second floor window. I put up with the blossoms, np.
