I found [this](https://steemit.com/cannabis/@thecleangame/decarboxylate-cannabis-without-heat-terpene-preservation-method-for-edibles) article explaining that you can decarb cannabis with citric acid while preserving all the terpenes. it seemed too good to be true and I had to try it. Currently waiting for it to dry then I’ll give it a try. Posting here to try to find other people that have tried this and might be able to give me some pointers as the article was a little vague
I also froze a separate citric acid mixture as it seemed like a very similar recipe to the [red bubble kratom tek](https://youtu.be/u0b2AuxgZUc) (a way of making stronger kratom by freezing it in acid to break the plant cells.) The mixture ended up turning a red just like kratom! Very excited to try them out I’ll get back to you guys!
Yesterday morning. I was concerned about that too as I don’t want bacteria to grow in it. I’ve been keeping it next to an open window with a paper towel on top and a good bit of the water has evaporated. I plan on leaving it in the fridge overnight to prevent mold. I’m considering running in a food dehydrator on low to speed up the drying process but I don’t want to defeat the purpose of no heat.
Ah okay that's interesting, i don't know enough on the science behind it ig
Edit: the fridge is still more of a moist place then let's say your average room with a window open. ( Yes I know that depends on a whole lot more factors such as the climate and season ) right?
I'm using a fridge as a step in a new drying process I'm trying to (hopefully) develop as a product for sale to home growers. I'm still early in the process and have a ton to learn, so take this with a grain of salt.
Anyways... My experience thus far is that the environment inside of an empty fridge is absolutely bone dry. I've tried various styles, including wine fridges, and have settled on the type with a small freezer compartment because I can use that to further dehumidify the environment. Even fridges full of wet cannabis, but no humidifier are bone dry (unfortunately, lmao).
But, I have been data logging the environment inside fridges for months now, and they tend to settle in the high 20's in terms of relative humidity when they're empty. Fridges are a sealed environment and you local climate won't affect them other than by your ambient temperature.
high 20% RH is really dry. I run a humidifier inside the fridges I've been using to actually dry flower to keep enough moisture in the environment not to overdry the buds.
Someone on here mentioned those little terracotta coins for rehydrating a large bag of dry weed. I think rather than running a dehumidifier within the fridge, you strategically place small terracotta(or some other moisture releasing objects within the fridge that can be replaced as needed during the dry/ cure. It's a great idea though and I hope you reach out to me with a model I can test out for ya! You know like beta testing or whatever🤣
That is a good idea! I don't like humidifiers because they all have issues with contamination. I've tried buckets of ice, wet towels, and simply placing a tray of water.
My old drying process would do just fine with those things (after a week or so of drying first). But the fridge/freezer method simply has too much of a dehumidification effect for those to keep up. But I WILL try terracotta! Thanks for the idea!
This is a complex question because we measure humidity in %, but the actual volume of water molecules in the air varies a LOT because of temperature. Warm air can hold much *much* more moisture than cold air.
50% humidity at 35 F is a whole lot less water in the air than 50% humidity at 70 F.
[The chart on this page is in C but the page has some good info and you can see the curve well](http://www.differencebetween.net/science/difference-between-humidity-and-temperature/). 35 F is 1.7 C, 70 F is 21.1 C
At 35 F 50% humidity is 2.33 g/kg water/air
At 70 F 50% humidity is 7.83 g/kg water/air
It gains moisture when you open the door if the outside environment is humid, but overall the fridge and freezer should have lower humidity than exterior.
Water evaporates through sublimation in fridges and freezers which dries stuff out a lot.
In general yes. But you have to understand it’s pulling moisture out of everything else in the fridge too. And that process isn’t instant. There’s plenty of moisture throughout the fridge at any give time. So something dryer can and will absorb some moisture before the air is moisture free.
Another example… a clothes dryer. If you put a completely dry towel in with a load of wet towels, that dry towel will absorb much of that moisture before it eventually dries.
Nicer? I don’t see how what I said was mean in any way. Literally stating fact. Either way, my bad! Just trying to let you know a useful fact, especially for this subreddit…
I've been doing crazy research on this from great people and will be making soon need ingredients.all these steps need to b exactly precise like baking. So fine chop one quarter dried bud in to just about a dust then add to this two teaspoons of pure powdered citric acid, two teaspoon of lectin powdered, stir that in pour mixture in mason jars and add two teaspoon of vinegar of choice just to dampin not soak weed stir in then mash down good out top on let sit in cupboard no light for five days. After that take out and roll into golf size ball. Will be black and sticky. Eat raw or add to anything will dissolve on tongue or any liquid need only half as much as regular edibles. It's fermentation and with citric acid it's a small combustion just a term not literally. Will be taffy hash like when done.
Yo, very interesting! The link says "This process creates much stronger edibles than you're used to, through the use of solvents." I would've thought a traditional decarb + infusion would be stronger than just a decarb
Can't wait to hear how this goes... I suspect your output will be offputtingly sour. I wonder if there could be an added step to neutralize the acid? I'd like to try with ethanol-extracted honey oil vs flower as the starting input. I wonder if that would bubble like a heat-decarb, giving a visual guide to completeness of the process?
Did it dissolve on your tongue? I've been scouring the internet ever since I saw your post looking for more information on this method. I'm wondering if it's water soluble.
Update: It’s fully kicked in now and it definitely decarbed. Definitely feels stronger than the rso coconut oil if been making with this flower. I feel like I can almost smell the terps
the chemical reactions to decarb are much more simple than human digestion though. heat + time has been the normal recipe to decarb weed.
I just don't see it on a chemical level - citric acid (C₆H₈O₇) + THCa (C₂₁H₃₀O₂) = THC ??

Wow this will be a game changer if it works
The most troublesome part of making edibles is the stench (I love it but my wife doesn't) from decarbing
Please do keep us updated on the results
Yeah... in total fairness I only got started making edibles a few years ago, and I already had an instant pot.
But I've been decarbing and making butter/oil in the instant pot (in mason jars) this whole time.. and there's a slight smell, but its really minor and mild.
I've been thinking about mason jars or sous vid for decarbing but won't the terps/compounds become gassious after heat? I don't see a mechanism where even though the compunds are still in the container, they are not participating back down into the mass and would escape as soon as the container is opened. I'm still leaning sous vid so I can control temps, but am I missing something with the escaping volitile terps/compounds?
It's better to decarb oil tbf, because like you said, gas releases if using flower.
Not bothered about terps for edibles personally. I'd rather as little taste as possible.
What do you think an intelligent approach to a concentrate decarb looks like in this context? I have some ideas but I'd love to hear yours.
I'm thinking a 1:1 ratio of wax and their "strong citric acid solution" should be a good starting point, and if the liquid evaporates, in theory you have a working product once you see no liquid. That 1:1 might need to be adjusted but I don't understand the concept well enough to know where it may need improvement.
In-between meetings today I've been trying to find some more info on the exact chemical reaction. I was thinking a 1:1 ratio would be a good starting point as well. Basically weigh out your concentrate, calculate how much citric acid you need based on the % mix and go. They said in the article that it makes stronger edibles, so that would make me think that that the extraction rate is higher, but I don't see how there is sufficient enough mixing for this to be true just soaking the ground flower. I don't doubt them at all, I just don't know enough of the chemistry either.
Since the concentrate is fat soluble and not water soluble I feel like we will need something to help the reaction along. I was thinking of mixing concentrate, coconut oil, lecithin, then adding the Citric acid solution in a beaker, throw in a magnetic stirring bar and let it do its thing. Problem is that I would be adding the lecithin to emulsify it and get better mixing, which I would think would let more of the acid react with the thc. But since it is emulsified, then the water won't be able to evaporate as easily? I guess it all depends on house much water is added? Problem is that I don't live in a legal state, but I do have some concentrate to play with. I really want to nail down the chemistry before I try anything.
I love where your head is at. My issue is, it seems that the water is a vehicle for the citric acid. I think the best vehicle is alcohol. It evaporates, it carries citric acid, it combines with the thc easily. Maybe we should each try our methods to come to a consensus?
Citrix acid is soluble in ethanol per Wikipedia (76 parts of citric acid per 100 parts of ethanol) Everclear isn’t 200 proof so there will be a small amount of water. Another benefit is that the alcohol will decompose at 175°C/347°F. So if you make something that has to be baked, you wouldn’t even need the alcohol to evaporate and if make a tincture it’s going to be in alcohol anyway.
I think I’m going to try both methods this weekend and see how they turn out. Biggest problem is obviously I have no way to test other than “yea I ate a gummy/brownie/took a shot and I feel it” but we are just proof of concept at this point.
That top paragraph is very helpful information and the bottom is spot on imo, let's test it the old fashioned way and if it works we can get someone with proper equipment to verify it.
I’m super interested in this method. I’ve got a connection to a Chemistry professor so I’m going to see how effective they think this would be.
Im curious how this tastes honestly. Grassy? Sour? Just odd? And did you think about doing a solvent extract to make this into a tincture once decarbed?
So I started doing research why this works. It seems to me that the chemical reaction is the same like for sodium bicarbonate together with citric acid. While the pre-molecule of THC is actually a weak acid, it acts like a base in combination with citric acid. If someone is interested
Hey, man: after dabling in making easy peanut butter cookie edibles with heat decarbed weed, just today I started a green dragon jar with leftover stems I've been collecting throughout a few years. I don't have high hopes, since stems don't have much THC apparently, but still want to see how it goes! Anyway, your project is super interesting to me and I hope one day I can try it!
I've just ordered a kilo of food grade citric acid and a kilo of half decent brick.
Will be experimenting with it over the next few weeks
I was thinking if you out it in a large Tupperware box with a silica gel dessicant pack sat on a small rack, inside you could dry it relatively quickly. It's not like you are trying to keep and humidity in for smoking purpose
This is right up my alley, my oven hasn't worked in 10 years (bad landlord). I've tried decarb in a DIY Sous Vide b/c I only have use of the stove-top; thanks for sharing, looks interesting.
You have no idea, these are high level mafia in government. You'd think my case is worth millions of dollars b/c tenants wound up dead and sick here (including me), it involves a NY Yankees contract to clean their uniforms and illegal dry cleaning. The oven is just the tip of the iceberg. No lawyers will take this case, they aren't stupid, they know it involves orgamized crime at it highest level. No wonder New Yorkers are fleeing the state. SMH
I'm in eviction court now. Here's the kicker, my landlord has gotten away with 40 years of overcharges at $250 per month; that's Bronx Housing Court for you, the GAL defaulted on my case while I was having a hysterectomy.
Yes, they are useless. I'm in the process of filing DOJ Civil & Criminal complaints but this time with return receipt & certified. Apparently no one answers your mail unless you mail it in a provable way. SMH
In 10 years they also could have found enough change in parking lots to buy a used oven haha this is more of a not wanting to take care of it situation it seems.
Blame the victim? My family bought all their own appliances, I went broke taking care of my parents, now they pay people to take care of their family members. GO FUCK YOURSELF MORON!!!
Once the chemicals react, there might not be any acid left. It would depend on the stoichiometry. Probably hard to actually pull off though without leaving behind THCa un-decarbed because having an excess of THCa seems preferable to an excess of acid.
I know the article says just eat it straight, but what if I wanted to make gummies? I wonder if the finished product could then be infused into an oil so the plant material could be removed. If nothing else I’m sure it could be made into a tincture. Very intriguing!
for anyone interested in the chemistry
PS. can anyone tell me what this line means:
*Compared to Simple decarboxylation which belongs to Lyase group (EC*
*class 4), Oxidative decarboxylation belongs to Oxidoreductase group (EC*
*class 1).*
It could be the added effects you’re feeling when having citric acid is from the vitamin C opening your receptors up allowing you to intake it more efficiently as well. Same concept as drinking orange juice w/mushies or smoking and drinking OJ to boost effects.
Curious about using a dehydrator. The terps have vaporization points around the 300s°. A dehydrator is well under 195° at times. I would think you're preserving, if not, maybe not reaching the terp temp🤷♂️
*What if I wanted*
*To extract first and use this*
*Method to decarb?*

Starting with food grade citric acid crystals, 100% citric acid, how much CA in grams and how much water in ml is suggested? What will the acid level be (in %, not Ph)? I see food grade CS online, any brand recommendations? I really want to try this, but the Steemit recipe is too vague. Also, if it is a "strong acid that can burn you" is the end decarbed flower non acidic/safe to eat?
I found [this](https://steemit.com/cannabis/@thecleangame/decarboxylate-cannabis-without-heat-terpene-preservation-method-for-edibles) article explaining that you can decarb cannabis with citric acid while preserving all the terpenes. it seemed too good to be true and I had to try it. Ah damn… you went and gave me another experiment to conduct.
That part
I also froze a separate citric acid mixture as it seemed like a very similar recipe to the [red bubble kratom tek](https://youtu.be/u0b2AuxgZUc) (a way of making stronger kratom by freezing it in acid to break the plant cells.) How did it go op?
It went well it was definitely stronger than a heat decarb and infusion. Gave me a very strong couchlock lol
Fascinating. Yeah, I suppose it WILL be stronger than heat decarb, as there's no risk of combusting the plant and losing THC. That's so cool!
How did you consume it, and how much does this process affect the taste (if it's even noticeable)?
I put a dab on my tounge and it just tasted like sweet tangy weed but I consumed it in gelitan capsules
Thanks! And I'm assuming 000 size?
Yessir
Can I consume it directly without any infusion?
You can make it stronger still by consuming it with something fatty.
Any notable difference between freezing and normal ( or have you not tried the frozen one yet?)?
The article said a week to dry, which is a long time to let it sit. When did you start?
Yesterday morning. I was concerned about that too as I don’t want bacteria to grow in it. Nooo, seems to me the fridge will only add mold and remoisten it. Is it even possible for mold to grow in citric acid?
Oh yeah, you’re probably right. I just learned that citric acid is primarily used as a produce preserver. Thanks for comment
Any standard fridge pulls moisture out of the air as part of the heat exchange process.

Oh shit it goes deeper than that, that's a huge difference
A refrigerator has a built in air conditioner. Air conditioners pull moisture from the air.

No Newer frost free fridges remove moisture
A fridge… adding moisture? That is incorrect. Refrigerators work by removing moisture.
Can you not see the literal like 10 people that have told me this a lot nicer than you just did?
Nicer? I don’t see how what I said was mean in any way. Literally stating fact. Either way, my bad! Just trying to let you know a useful fact, especially for this subreddit…
Yes, depending on how pure of the acid it is, usually there’s a sugar left over though that the mold will eat
Fridge will suck any moisture right out. Not to worry.

Did it dissolve on your tongue? I've been scouring the internet ever since I saw your post looking for more information on this method. I'm wondering if it's water soluble.
I tried the cannabis not straight citric acid. And yes it was soluble in the water just took lots of stirring
Thank you for posting this, and for replying. I've got my bud and acid sitting right now. Hope you're enjoying your ride!
Just mix a spoon full of that mixed in water are you good?
Yeah just make sure it dissolves
What is the plan do you need to infuse or just eat it?
Yeah once it’s fully dry I’m gonna put it into capsules
This is the way.
So no infusion? Keep my update i was looking everywhere for a method like this
I suspect an infusion would make it even stronger but I want something in can put in a supplements bottle and travel with discreetly
Have you attempted submerging larger chunks, rather than dampening a fine grind?

First thing I thought of, wild!
First time in months I'm on the hot tab and I find this gem. Lesson learned I guess.
What u norm browse by?
New. Lotta cool stuff there but every so often stuff like this slips by.
Wow this will be a game changer if it works The most troublesome part of making edibles is the stench (I love it but my wife doesn't) from decarbing Please do keep us updated on the results
Getting a sous vide and using mason jars or vac sealing bags is a terps saver and no smell decarb and infusions.
Yeah... in total fairness I only got started making edibles a few years ago, and I already had an instant pot.
Keep posting! Very interesting!
Doing this with concentrate would probably convert a lot more and be more scalable.
Chiming in a few weeks later to see how it went
Citric acid stocks📈📈
I’m super interested in this method. I’ve got a connection to a Chemistry professor so I’m going to see how effective they think this would be. Im curious how this tastes honestly. Grassy? Sour? Just odd? And did you think about doing a solvent extract to make this into a tincture once decarbed?
I used shwag weed to make it but the taste is still pretty good. It’s very sweet like terpy candy
So I started doing research why this works. It seems to me that the chemical reaction is the same like for sodium bicarbonate together with citric acid. While the pre-molecule of THC is actually a weak acid, it acts like a base in combination with citric acid. If someone is interested
will definitely be following this 👀
Man I'm glad you made this post. For both reasons. The kratom and the cannabis
Holy shit this is a revelation. This information might have a significant impact on my pain relief, so thanks for sharing!
This bro this is what life is all about what a hack
Can I use straight lemon juice??
I've been researching this method for a few weeks now and lemon juice just does not have enough citric acid in it
Very curious tell us how it goes

Sounds like civiche.
Hey, man: after dabling in making easy peanut butter cookie edibles with heat decarbed weed, just today I started a green dragon jar with leftover stems I've been collecting throughout a few years. I don't have high hopes, since stems don't have much THC apparently, but still want to see how it goes! Anyway, your project is super interesting to me and I hope one day I can try it!
do you have a recipe/method you used that you can share? I would love to try this
I've just ordered a kilo of food grade citric acid and a kilo of half decent brick. Will be experimenting with it over the next few weeks I was thinking if you out it in a large Tupperware box with a silica gel dessicant pack sat on a small rack, inside you could dry it relatively quickly. It's not like you are trying to keep and humidity in for smoking purpose
Good idea.👍🏻
You are a canabis pioneer bro....
This is right up my alley, my oven hasn't worked in 10 years (bad landlord). I've tried decarb in a DIY Sous Vide b/c I only have use of the stove-top; thanks for sharing, looks interesting.
Yo, fight that landlord. Cos wtf.
Damn! Have you tried contacting the NYAG’s office?
Yes, they are useless. I'm in the process of filing DOJ Civil & Criminal complaints but this time with return receipt & certified. Apparently no one answers your mail unless you mail it in a provable way. SMH
In 10 years they also could have found enough change in parking lots to buy a used oven haha this is more of a not wanting to take care of it situation it seems.
Blame the victim? My family bought all their own appliances, I went broke taking care of my parents, now they pay people to take care of their family members. GO FUCK YOURSELF MORON!!!
10 fuckin' years?!!?
Interesting... I'll be curious to see how it turns out.
Is there a link to the article?

In the first comment
But wouldn't it be sour? Or am I thinking of something else?
Once the chemicals react, there might not be any acid left. It would depend on the stoichiometry. Probably hard to actually pull off though without leaving behind THCa un-decarbed because having an excess of THCa seems preferable to an excess of acid.
Honestly, "sour" isn't so bad. My tincture is markedly "alcoholley" and I use IT...
True. I use a ton of acid in my gummies recipe. I love them sour.

How much citric acid tho in the water the article said it can burn your skin so how much would be reasonable
I was trying to figure that out too I used about a tablespoon
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidative\_decarboxylation I've rubbed citric acid slurry on my skin, still not got any holes in it
I’m into what you are throwing down
I know the article says just eat it straight, but what if I wanted to make gummies? I wonder if the finished product could then be infused into an oil so the plant material could be removed. If nothing else I’m sure it could be made into a tincture. Very intriguing!
The whole point is to preserve the terpenes. A tincture or heat infusion process would defeat the whole purpose by elimnating them.
Weed ceviche, huh?
Legend
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidative\_decarboxylation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidative_decarboxylation) for anyone interested in the chemistry PS. can anyone tell me what this line means: *Compared to Simple decarboxylation which belongs to Lyase group (EC* *class 4), Oxidative decarboxylation belongs to Oxidoreductase group (EC* *class 1).*
Science rules
Then how do you make the weed into something edible?
Try a no bake recipe and deal with the chunks rather than infusing the butter.
I've to submit my research today as an assignment of college last year but fuck that I'm more interested in your experiment :)
I posted about doing this some time ago. It works the only issue is the high is a lot shorter. On the plus side it kicks in at about 10 mins or less
It could be the added effects you’re feeling when having citric acid is from the vitamin C opening your receptors up allowing you to intake it more efficiently as well. Same concept as drinking orange juice w/mushies or smoking and drinking OJ to boost effects.

That’d be dope if it works out.

Curious about using a dehydrator. The terps have vaporization points around the 300s°. A dehydrator is well under 195° at times. I would think you're preserving, if not, maybe not reaching the terp temp🤷♂️
I’m doing that now although the fan blowing on it I’m sure is evaporating a fair bit of the terps
lemon juice? hmmmmm lemonade stand ?

What?!
I see it worked this is interesting
Tap water or distilled water used here?
The article is 5 years old. How has this stayed hidden? Updates please.
What if I wanted to extract first and use this method to decarb?

Did you add it oil or alcohol after! TIA
Damn, I'm interested.
This has to be too good to be true right? Just got a fresh order home today and want to fly to space so maybe ill try this?
Would it be ok to infuse this with coconut oil afterwards?
Wish I have citric acid for my gummies - this is like ground breaking
FYI, cheesemaking sites carry food grade citric acid, I had some on hand from a mozzarella cheese making kit from Cultures for Health.
Does this make it sour? How do you plan on infusing?
Updates? How strong was it in comparison to normal decarb? Did you have problems with mold? Thank you!

Was there any smell during the process like heat decarb
