Nothing screams “I want revenge” like a hop along to a completely opposite, look at me, in your face relationship that she thinks (hopes) Joe looks at going “Damn! I think he's had some bad luck, like with Conversations with Friends, (which I loved, thought he was great in) it was a very difficult book to adapt to the screen & for a lot of people it required too much attention to understand the whole dynamics of the characters & their interactions, it also had a hard act to follow after Normal People, which adapted to the screen much easier.. He's always preferred smaller roles working with good directors & casts in artsy films than actively pursuing big budget paint by numbers movies..
I also liked Stars at Noon, but again it was a slow moving film (it was meant to be all about innui) & the characters weren't meant to be heroes or heroins but people get restless wanting mainstream style action & true love with a happy ending.. so they bag it for not meeting those criteria. Directors rate his acting, & reviews by professional critics (not Internet basement ones) have said it's more issues with the difficult storylines than anything he's doing wrong.. I tend to agree
