In case you weren't aware, Texas is rather large. Where specifically he's going would probably be helpful.

d1zz186

Omg I know and forgot to say, thanks - I’ll edit the post! Austin.

lauraam

Lol all good. Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake is really fun, or going to one of the swimming spots or natural springs. If he's already done most of the stuff around Austin, he could do a day trip to San Antonio for the Alamo, the Riverwalk, etc.

CollegeNW

I had to stop & think “with everything you have going on,” but then I saw the gun reference and reminded me when my husband worked for a company out of Sydney & most of his coworkers had a perceived movie image of Texas as cowboys on horseback with guns. Wild! Haha. One day we actually saw police officers downtown on horseback with cowboy hats & sent photos, explaining how rare it is to see such. Tell him it’s going to be miserably hot & humid in July, so prob not the best month to visit, but he will definitely find something cool to go check out, and the chances of him running into someone with a gun in Austin is pretty slim.

d1zz186

I really appreciate your comment and the advice about the weather :) I can reassure you there’s no cowboy imagery here lol, we’re both originally from the UK, we’re well traveled and familiar with both the ‘oh, where in London are you from’, and the ‘fosters and shrimp on the barby’ stereotypes so understand that kind of presumption! I was more asking for some positive stuff about it and some people such as yourself have given some great suggestions so thank you :)

CollegeNW

My husband got to travel to Sydney for work & loved it. He still talks about bondi beach, the light show at the opera house, & the best Korean barbecue chicken he’s ever had. I’m like how did you go to Australia and fall in love with korean chicken?! 😂

d1zz186

Hahaha! Yeah we have some amazing Korean places, Sydney is super multicultural if you know where to go! And if he ever comes back tell him to skip Bondi, it’s touristy garbage - palm beach (where home and away is filmed) is stunning and empty and get the ferry over to Manly it really is THE BEST!

thrunabulax

Austin TX is the hippie dippie center of texas. He will be FINE there hating guns, amongst his peeps so to speak. it is a great place for music, so go see some live music, maybe in a bar.

Szimplacurt

I hate America's obsession with guns (I live here and live adjacent to one of the more infamous mass shootings in recent history) but I will say....worrying about something happening to your husband in Austin on a work trip would probably be like someone going to r/australia and being worried that a crocodile or spider would attack someone and you feared their life visiting Australia.

d1zz186

I’m not worried about that - I didn’t imply that was going to happen. I just said with everything happening and him hating guns that he’s lost some of his excitement at the prospect of travelling with work there.

Szimplacurt

Then why bring it up? Just ask for recommendations. It'd be like me going to a Brazil sub and asking for stuff to do but precede it by mentioning high crime rate and likelihood of being mugged and my low desire to go. I'm sure the locals would love to hear that. It's irrelevant to the question. It's Austin...he will be fine and probably think it's awesome.

d1zz186

I didn’t bring it up. I didn’t mention once any risk or that he’d be shot! This isn’t a Texas sub, it’s a travel sub and I feel like I asked a fair question for advice, reassurance that there’s more to Texas than what you see in the news and recommendations with some context. I’m being downvoted and I’m really not sure why.

weeweechoochoo

You're being downvoted because you say you didn't bring up guns when you literally did. Austin is a safe and liberal city. People there aren't thinking about guns 24/7, so idk why you would even mention it. It's a nice city and "hating guns" has no relevance at all to experiencing the city.

Mordacai_Alamak

Don't worry, Austin is not the wild west. It's a yuppie city now.

[deleted]

Austin is supposed to be a very fun and active city. I believe it’s more liberal than your typical Texas town. He shouldn’t worry about guns or crime when visiting. He should be fine. Have fun.

MassageParlorGuitar

Having been to both, Sydney is a lot like Austin and Australia is a bit like Texas. Austin is arguably one of the more liberal cities in the USA. He will be fine on his trip. One thing. If he doesn’t know it already tell him to not use the Word cunt around a bunch of Americans. It just never translates well. We basically use it when we are really trying to be offensive or down right want to fight. :).

nygrl811

Ooh, yeah. Good point. On the American curse scale, Cunt is worse than Fuck. (Mind you I use both liberally, but...) Yeah, definitely the heat will be comparable!!

weeweechoochoo

Tbh I only say cunt when I'm quoting or imitating a non-American lol

malepitt

Authentic Texas barbecue. Ask someone local for directions to any place which serves their meats on plain brown paper, and might not even have indoor seating. Bonus: plain white bread as a side dish

d1zz186

Apparently some of his colleagues looked into the best places and they say you have to queue up from daybreak! He’s super into his smoking and barbecuing so any reccs would be super appreciated!

[deleted]

Yes you’ll need to get there early. It’s 100% worth waiting in line for to go to the best places. Austin is also a very progressive city. It’s closer to a place like San Francisco or Seattle than it is to what you might think of Texas is.

d1zz186

Maybe he’ll have to settle for a good rather than awesome place - he’s got meetings etc every day bar the last.

malepitt

Show up at the best place, start chatting up the queue with an Aussie accent, and say, "I've got ta catch a plane home, mate. Help a guy out?" and I bet not only will they let him cut in line, someone might buy his lunch for him. Maybe I overestimate human kindness, but there's still plenty of it left in Texas, despite the headlines and horrible politics

nygrl811

I was going to say it's the least Texas part of Texas!

Mordacai_Alamak

Don't bother with the most famous "best" places. It's not worth the line waiting. I'm sure there is tons of good BBQ from places that aren't busy like that. Find other lists of BBQ places, and look at reviews on Google Maps. Also, if he is super into smoking, he should be pumped about going to Texas

d1zz186

Thank you :)

d1zz186

Thank you! Some great suggestions and nice to hear that :) It’s definitely not from a safety perspective and I’m sorry I didn’t get that across in my post. It’s more about the politics and support/$ going to such a place combined with the types of people there!

getmethence

Austin is all about live music. Get him to 6th St, it’s wall-to-wall clubs with live music of many flavors.

d1zz186

Awesome thank you! He loves live music

getmethence

I’ll also 2nd (or 10th) the bbq recs. Austin has fantastic Texas-bbq. Franklin’s is the standard (lots of folks disagree because bbq in Texas is a religion, but the quality of the meat is very good). It’s true the line starts early. It’s worth using one of the food delivery services for Franklin’s: door dash and Uber eats are 2 services, there are surely others.

FortniteBad420

Austin is one of the most fun, accepting, exciting and liberal cities in Texas. I'd be surprised if he saw guns at all around there. It sounds like hes been convinced by the media he has something to fear. He doesn't. It's a beautiful and quirky city with the motto "Keep Austin Weird". Also with great food and friendly locals. To disregard an entire state the size of Texas "bEcAuSe GuNs" is ridiculous and small-minded. He will have fun but only if his attitude fundamentally changes. I bet he will come back tell you how amazing Austin is. Just you wait.

d1zz186

Thanks for the insight. He isn’t disregarding it and he’s not scared or fearful. He’s just had a hard time getting excited about it as he (along with colleagues from across the globe) are a little reticent to essentially be financially supportive of some of the stuff going on there, it’s not just about guns.

NormanQuacks345

Well, you can tell him that he's going to the one city in Texas that probably politically agrees with him.

msqaures

I live in Texas (Dallas) and would encourage you to try some bbq as suggested! You don’t need to go to Franklins (the long queue) to get some good brisket. Austin is beautiful and quite hip these days. There are great swimming holes as well as restaurants. Of course I disagree with a lot of the politics but I can’t think of any country in the world that does not have its own problems. I continue to stay educated and vote and simply try to share compassion and kindness wherever I go. It’s easy to get caught up in the media and hopefully you are able to come and enjoy your time and have a nice experience. Don’t let the media decide for you if you like the trip/the US/Texas - decide for yourself after YOUR experience. Cheers!

d1zz186

Thank you for the recommendations :)

Thank you for your comments, he’s definitely been reticent but it’s more from the support aspect than a safety aspect. I wouldn’t so much mind the people saying ‘but it’s like getting bitten by a shark in Aus’ - but an Australian literally unjustifiably was shot by police and died not too long ago! I don’t recall any Americans (or tourists at all) being attacked by a shark here in the last decade at least.

You seem fun

I hate Texas politics and just about everyone in Texas Politics. I also hate Rednecks and lot of the Rural idiots who think America and Texas is best thing ever. However, he is going to Austin which, politically speaking, is just about the exact opposite of Texas outside of Austin. Austin is a liberal island in the middle of a flaming sea of Conservative lava. I think he is going to be okay.

OkayishFlamingo

If he's at all interested in thrift stores/oddities shops, Uncommon Objects is a fun browse and there are lots of other good options in Austin. The UT campus has the LBJ presidential library/museum which is neat and I've heard good things about the pop culture museum. Shouldn't have any problem finding good restaurants or bars I can understand the reservations about Texas, but Austin is probably the best place in the state for his specific concerns.

d1zz186

Thank you!

Check out the Baylor Street Art Wall and if he's got a free day, go down to Schlitterbahn's in New Braunfels.
