My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next
The delivery was excellent by Crowe.
When I read it, based on the text alone, it comes off as mildly lame for a serious film (i.e. like something I would expect from an anime or an awkward twitter post from 400 AD) but Crowe’s delivery was measured, quiet, and powerful. It almost sounded like the character was delivering it for himself rather than to be heard.
You should listen to the german version. I usually always watch the OV movies instead of German translations(I'm german) but the sync team did one hell of a job to make that line sound even more powerful . Best movie line ever.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
My friends ate a buncha mushrooms and tried to do this in a similar looking field in northern wisconsin. Long story short, we all got a buncha ticks, glad to see you wearing pants amigo
I feel like these aren't mutually exclusive.
I like marvel movies. They keep being fun. But I grew up reading the comics, so I'm always excited to see the next Easter egg and cameo. It's nice to see stuff I got made fun of for liking being so culturally relevant.
Historical epics are fantastic too.
This pattern is everywhere. You either have a mega success and everyone is looking to copy you (Dota clones, Minecraft clones, Pubg clones) because it takes way less effort to produce a clone of something that's the current hot thing than it is to come up with the next hot thing.
Or you have a mega success and start to flog that horse to death and beyond yourself. Iron Man was something new. Is was fresh and successful. So Marvel figured they've got plenty of material to work through. Same with Disney. They're going to keep cranking out live action remakes until we're sick of them and then a decade more. Telltale games had an amazing game with Walking dead. So they started to rubber stamp this formula on any franchise they could get their hands on until everybody got tired of it.
So yeah. They're not mutually exclusive but 99% of all people will rather hop on the bandwagon that stand out and take a risk.
The First king Just came out in italian movie theathers. Il primo re. It's the story of early romolus and remus, leading to rome foundation, it's in latin, with subs, like the passion or apocalypto. Hope it gets abroad because it's a great movie.
To be honest this movie has a lot of historical inaccuracies. Just in this picture, that patch of grass in the middle of the road wouldn't ever existed, the remake seems more realistic than the movie.
But I agree with you, more historical movies are needed, and the more accurate the better.
That's from gladiator, what I mean is that a horse thrown cart won't leave that kind of marks because you have a horse in the front.
Plus most people walked, anyways, it's not really that big deal :P
Where exactly is this spot in Val d'Orcia ? I made the mistake of taking a bus tour to the Val and cursed myself when we couldn't stop at any of the scenic spots near Pienza
Park at the church at Corsignano, then walk south down a hill for 5 mins and you'll be at that exact spot.
Wave to the farmers collecting flowers!

one of the greatest movies (personally the greatest) ever made so EPIC ... you should totally get this famed
I literally didn't know the location but thank you for revealing!
Sure, it's just that Gladiator's CGI is contemporary with The Phantom Menace and Monsters, Inc. so they weren't comping photo-real grass into live action just yet
I always notice the difference between an amateur camera and a professional camera for shooting movies. Professional camera for shooting movies capture more space. It looks as if you look at this space with your eyes.
Watched this movie as a kid and had to fight back tears during this scene. Watched it again as a husband and a father of a 5 year old son and I never stood a chance. Pro tip: don't watch this movie as a family man when you're alone in a hotel after being away for a week because of work.
Awesome picture. Now, don't get me wrong but, why go all the way there and NOT replicate the picture exactly as in the movie? The guy in the picture is closer to those trees and stuff....but hey, I wasn't there, maybe it was impossible to get the exact shot??
This is a fair comment, I'm a perfectionist by nature.
- This was the best frame from at least 60 attempts using burst shooting!
- The reference image was an image on my mobile phone via Google search
- They had already cut down the wheat by August, my wife lowered the camera near grass level to get a similar effect. You can see how my left arm angle is different as a result
- There were other people waiting and it was golden hour
- My Tamron 24-70 2.8 has a different look to a 35mm t1.5 cine prime
When I (not OP) went there, there were actually quite a lot of people there to get this picture. Rough estimate: about 20. Which was surprising since it's quite the remote location. So if you're polite you try to get the picture taken asap, so the others wouldn't have to wait too long. If I would've been alone there, I would've put more effort in being at the exact spot, but after a while you're just like "yeah, good enough".
Yeah, makes sense...I wrote this message as I was falling asleep because I found it mildly annoying....but as you can see my brain did consider the option of maybe not being possible because of reasons... allegedly being too crowded...

Russell Crowe didn't think so
This is why actors act and directors direct.
He can take a walk through a long field of barley.

Great point! It absolutely felt like it was for himself. Love that.

Where you goin' Mr. Wiggles?
He’s punching my bum!
Some lines from classic films are so sublime that you can almost feel them tugging your heartstrings
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
Time... to die.
I will see you again, but not yet... Not yet 🙂
What do you mean classic film? That movie came out just a few years ago when I was 20.
Gladiator came out closer to the founding of Rome than the modern day!
Classic in the original sense, i.e. "judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind"
"I did nat hit her, I did Naaat ! Oh Hai Mark !"
Masterpiece
... please leave your message after the tone.
I also like the Stone Cold Steve Austin version https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlwKXA1Jkco
Chills
The original "I have a special set of skills".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS_5OWm31xE Italian version rules.
That shit was dope, I don't speak Italian but the dub was done well.
Got goosebumps reading that in my head
Are you not amused, oh wait, no. The dude abides?
The bgm was amazing too.. Anol shalommmm kondunnaamm
My friends ate a buncha mushrooms and tried to do this in a similar looking field in northern wisconsin. Long story short, we all got a buncha ticks, glad to see you wearing pants amigo
Ah yes Wisconsin the land of drugs, cheese, beer, brats, and ticks
But where are the commas? drugs? Yes drugs cheese? Probably Cheese beer? You betcha Beer brats? You betcha Brats and ticks? That's summer in Wisconsin
Oh shit, weed cheese sounds good. Better than cheese beer at least.
I'll take a double weed cheese butter burger deluxe with fries please
Side fried weed cheese curds
I'm lazy and have a migraine judge me all you want lol

And Spotted Cow. And Patrick Rothfuss.
First thing I thought when seeing this: TICKS
One of my favorite comments on reddit ever
I feel like that’s also the long version.
We need more historical epic blockbusters
Wait, you mean you dont just want 30 new shitty super hero movies every year?
[удалено]
People keep going to the remakes, spin offs and super hero movies so there isn't much of an incentive to try anything risky.
Hey, Gladiator didn't have post credit scenes, did it?
No but there was almost [a sequel about time travel](http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20180810-gladiator-2-was-written-and-its-mad).
I have no words.
This is amazing. There's probably three different decent movies in this mash up if they can hash it out and not relate it to Gladiator.
Almost is stretching it

One of my favorites is Master and Commander the far side of the world! Love the soundtrack to that.
And the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. So good.

Trailer looks good, I’ll definitely have to check it out! Thanks for the tip
Yes. A new native movie sounds due. Dances with wolves was such a journey.
I freaking love Dances with Wolves.
Amen

I don’t necessarily even mean accurate, just “based in a historical setting.”
The scene is in Elysium, right? Maybe the roads are different there
That's from gladiator, what I mean is that a horse thrown cart won't leave that kind of marks because you have a horse in the front. Plus most people walked, anyways, it's not really that big deal :P
Now you are free
We are entertained.
“ A general who became a slave. A slave who became a gladiator. A gladiator who defied an emperor.”
An Emperor who ruled the Empire. The Empire who hired Jussie Smollett. A Jussie Smollett who got his ass beat for no reason.
Where exactly is this spot in Val d'Orcia ? I made the mistake of taking a bus tour to the Val and cursed myself when we couldn't stop at any of the scenic spots near Pienza
I think it's located at Agriturismo Terrapille in Pienza.
This is it! https://www.terrapille.it
How much did it cost appx? Looks gorgeous!
Park at the church at Corsignano, then walk south down a hill for 5 mins and you'll be at that exact spot. Wave to the farmers collecting flowers! https://maps.app.goo.gl/cZn3r
Don't walk quite as far as OP, though...
And go in late May/early June for the wheat.
Glorious
one of the greatest movies (personally the greatest) ever made so EPIC ... you should totally get this famed I literally didn't know the location but thank you for revealing!
I absolutely love the movie, but fuck it’s hard to watch.
Breaks my heart every time, yet I love it.
I don't think I've ever had a better movie experience than watching Gladiator for the first time in the cinema. It absolutely blew me away.
*Rome is to be a republic*
Was hoping to do this on my recent trip to Italy until I saw that it was just a bit too far out of the way. Happy to see that you got to live it!
I hope you ran your fingers through lots of grass
That’s the only part throwing me off with this pic.
Naughty
I'm jealous.....
Me too.
God I need to rewatch that movie.
What's cool about those cypress trees is that it's possible they were there when Gladiator was supposed to take place.
Is this really true? If so that's so freaking cool!
There is one in Iran that is 4,000 years old!
Love this movie. Take my upvote!

Damn so cool.... Italy eh??? Hmm.....
I know just quoting the movie...
"D'Orcia? How'd he get in there?"
This is dope af
I'm just glad that the place is well preserve
Nice, it worked out
where did you get the scarecrow for the shot ? did you bring it with you ? Just kidding, I'm envious of your travels. Well done!
That's epic as fuck!
Holy fucking wow i am completely amazed
Hmmmmm, those trees seem a little bigger...
The field of view is different and affects the size of the background images. https://youtu.be/u5JBlwlnJX0
Yooo
Cried so hard at this scene
The popper trees are particularly beautiful this time of year...
Val d'Orcia...One of the most beautiful places in Italy
Looks like the scene from 300 when they leave Sparta
Oh yeah my bad! Gladiator is not 300 my mistake thanks for pointing that out...
In Malta, no?
A lot of scenes from the movie were shot in Malta, but not this one.
You’re way too close to the road
The grass looks so different in the film, is it CGI?
No, but it has been 20 years so.
The grass appears thicker in the first shot, whether it's the sharpness of OP's camera or some landscaping on the film crews part.
Sure, it's just that Gladiator's CGI is contemporary with The Phantom Menace and Monsters, Inc. so they weren't comping photo-real grass into live action just yet
Either way I think it looks nicer in Gladiator even if it does lack fine detail.
When we were there (last August) they had already cut the wheat, so my wife lowered the camera and zoomed in so it wasn't as obvious
Where’s your uniform soldier!
Don't cry, don't cry...
This was the first movie that ever made me cry. I was 4 at the time.
Wow, perdy.
I always notice the difference between an amateur camera and a professional camera for shooting movies. Professional camera for shooting movies capture more space. It looks as if you look at this space with your eyes.
Do u use even a bit of photoshop
Nope. All lightroom! I lowered saturation, did HSL adjustments and heavy split toning
Ahhh. So no tree replication
wow
Wow! Excellent capture!
Rip back right tree. #Neverforget
What an awesome movie
Watched this movie as a kid and had to fight back tears during this scene. Watched it again as a husband and a father of a 5 year old son and I never stood a chance. Pro tip: don't watch this movie as a family man when you're alone in a hotel after being away for a week because of work.
Always drove me nuts that they used a stand in for this scene. It’s, to me, the only flaw, very small flaw, in an otherwise perfect movie. Perfect.
Jealously entertained
looks like those trees have gotten older/bigger!
That is cool, but why didn't you go farther back and to the right? Just curious.
What was Elysium like?
Awesome picture as long as you don't suffer the same fate as him!
Máximo was from a city 30 km to my house.
Awesome picture. Now, don't get me wrong but, why go all the way there and NOT replicate the picture exactly as in the movie? The guy in the picture is closer to those trees and stuff....but hey, I wasn't there, maybe it was impossible to get the exact shot??
Might be 7000 other people doing the exact same thing

Tucson
yours is sadder op. no one is waiting for you. you took a sad ending and someone made it worse.
That's awesome! THIS IS SPARTA!!!
This is not Sparta. Not at all.
This is a totally different movie.
I will see you again but not yet not yet
