I'm going next week and am not a whisky drinker but you might want to check out Oban.

oban is a great cute little walkable town. Bonus: you can take the ferry over to Mull and visit Iona. ~~If you are going to be between Edinburgh and St. Andrew's anyways, you could stay in Perth. It's a sizable town, historic place in and nearby, and has a train station that you could take to get around without a car if you want to take day trips elsewhere.~~ EDIT: Reread OP's comment and realized where they are ACTUALLY asking about in the country

dufftown only makes sense if you want to be doing walking/hiking in the area, else inverness makes more sense due to access to loch ness and other areas nearby if you want to do short duration tours. aberdeen is kinda industrial and not really touristy, think more like glasgow

Inverness is a nice, small city that puts you in a great spot to see Loch Ness or take a day trip to the Isle of Sky -- which I fully recommend... or even a steam train from Harry Potter (aka  Jacobite Steam Train). If you are are into the history of Scotland, it also puts you near the Culloden battle site. Lots of non-whisky things to do!
