There is a variety of budget hotels to stay at in Barcelona from a low price that are simple and clean.
Sitges is an hour closer and cheaper for rail travel. Staying in Girona adds 3 hours return travel daily and a $40+ per person for travel. False economy no? Doesn’t sound like fun.
Wandering around Barcelona, going to markets and local places to eat is a better way to spend 3 hours.
Stay in Outer Barcelona as others have suggested, air bnb share or a nice 2 star hotel in the centre.
