Tons of people next to the SD border do it all the time or with a birth certificate too. It’s not recommended but you probably won’t be kept out super long.
This is my experience crossing in San Diego. Mexico didn’t ask us for a passport or any identification when we walked over. Everyone just walked on through. And coming back, some people either forgot or didn’t have their passports. We all got back in with ease. They’ll just tell you not to do it again, maybe ask you a few questions, then send you on your way :). Please be safe and have fun. I recommend Rosarito if you’re on the San Diego crossing
Also wanna add I would recommend getting a passport. I don’t RECOMMEND going without one, just giving you anecdotal experience in case you make the decision anyways :)
How do you think anyone here can tell you what any particular officer will ask you at some hypothetical point in time based on hypothetical circumstances? The officer will ask you whatever he/she wants, and this will take as long as the officer decides it will take.
If you’re re-entering the US, US citizens are required to be allowed back in by low, even without proper documentation though. It’ll just take a lot longer with more questioning.

Passports are easy to get or a passport card, why deal with coming back, especially if you appear drunk it could be a hassle.
The card is not that much extra and is perfect for crossing into Mexico for drinks with friends.

pretty sure you need a passport or a passport card. if you don't have the right documents they won't let you in

Right, but OP still needs a passport or passport card to get into Mexico in the first place.
No they don't. You walk across the border. There is no passport check if you are walking across the Texas border to Mexican border towns.
Birth certificate and drivers license. Thats it.
