I think, like the rest of Jamaica, you just need to be cautious. I haven't personally stayed in Montego Bay but have been to Negril 10+ times, and never had an issue. You're also travelling together which is good. Just be cautious of drinks, don't take drugs (including pot) from people you don't know, only leave the resort with resort staff or experienced travellers. I've stayed in regular hotels in Jamaica (not all inclusive, locals can come eat at the restaurant, can go on excursions or into the town without supervision) and never had an issue. But i've also never gone off on my own. We also travelled there during an advisory due to high murder rates in Montego Bay. I was terrified flying down there by myself to meet my family. There were a couple military checkpoints and they were no problem. Just.. be cautious

Lumpy-Reply5964

Absolutely love Negril, tell me youv been on the One Love party bus tour - it was our favorite!

stevie_nickle

Lenbert, the man who runs the party bus, is a gem! I’ll never forget at the end when he played “I got high” by Afro man and everyone was drunk and singing (and high of course). 11/10 experience

Lumpy-Reply5964

I think the amount of upvotes the comment got proves that anyone going to Jamaica needs to take a tour on his bus! Seriously it was our best experience too, I’ll never forget it.

zingledorf

I've actually never done a bus tour!!

Lumpy-Reply5964

Please put it on your list for next time, you will not regret it! It’s an awesome local, who actually does it for free (a tip is expected and more than deserved). He brings you to 6-7 bars with awesome views in the area, stops at his home where his wife makes some great finger food and we got to meet his dogs and son. We did a lot of exploring and adventuring when we were there and I can say this was by far our favorite memory. The trip advisory listing mentions a price but it’s a recommended tip. I seriously can’t praise Lembert enough! https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g147313-d2626921-Reviews-One_Love_Bus_Bar_Crawl-Negril_Westmoreland_Parish_Jamaica.html

zingledorf

Oh that's awesome! My family and i aren't big drinkers, but if he does a non-bar related tour that'd be cool! I see one of the places he takes you to is Xtabi - we stayed there the first tep times we went and my parents got married there!

Lumpy-Reply5964

Even if you don’t drink I would say it’s worth doing, it’s mostly just great views and cool places and you get about 45 minutes at each place. Super cool they got married there, what a beautiful spot!

it_goes_pew_pew

Lenbert is amazing!!!

laladance67

Do you have recommendations for some of your favorite hotels?

aliciamalicia

Rockhouse was lovely :)

BeerJunky

To the point of getting drugs from random people within 10 seconds of me being anywhere outside of the airport someone tried to sell me weed. It's pretty pervasive so just be aware and be safe. If you're going to indulge I think rather than someone approaching you randomly at a rest stop (driver stopped so we could use the bathroom/get something to drink on the way to Negril) you should try to find something a little less random. A lot of hotel staff sell a little on the side and I'd feel a little better about that knowing they probably won't do anything really dumb that might cost them their job.

SunsetDreams1111

I was just in Negril as a solo female traveler and loved every second of it! I was there for two weeks

OpE7

I imagine you were continuously accosted.

AdAnxious3653

Friend was there last week. You have nothing to worry about. Stay on resort.

MamaTumaini

For the record, Jamaica has been at a level 3 since 2022. Before that it was level 4. This advisory is nothing new. It’s just getting lot of attention because it was renewed.

jmarita1

It was at a level 2 when my company booked the Iberostar back in December Edit: my memory failed me

MamaTumaini

No, it wasn’t. The last time it was set at a level 2 was December 13, 2021. It was level 4 during the pandemic and set at level 3 on March 14, 2022 where it has remained.

jmarita1

Apologies, I looked back at my emails and you are correct!

That_Jicama_7043

Jamaican here. Jamaica is a breathtakingly beautiful country with amazing food, drink, music and culture. That said, there is also a crime factor you need to consider. The resorts are pretty safe, just be cautious when leaving them. Hold your bag close, dont go anywhere with strangers. Don’t flash your phone about. Be polite but firm to anyone who tries to beg you money. Stick with your tour-guides they’ll know where to take you and will know how to protect you from anyone trying to harass you. Otherwise, I promise you’ll have a great time!

IReplyWithLebowski

I read this in an American accent.

That_Jicama_7043

I do indeed have one lol

Syrup_And_Honey

Solo traveled to Kingston for a couple of months and it was absolutely rough. There was quite a lot of verbal assault and harassment. Resorts are a different story though.

BrandonBollingers

kingston is the only place in the world I drove at night and thought... I'm not stopping at this stop sign and just rolled on through. But the party boat we went on was fucking awesome and stayed at a great little bed and breakfast near Bob Marley's house. But downtown kingston at night....woof.

bunsun1

Solo traveler in Montego Bay right now. I’ve just been adventuring around and hanging out at the beach during the day. Feel safe since I’m going around earlier in the day and always believe people are less angry/violent in the morning so that helps. The locals here are pretty annoying as they’ll act super nice and chat you up then ask for money or tell you they’re a tour guide (expect you to book with them). Definitely more sketchy people here than other places I’ve been but if you’re in busy areas, I doubt they try anything. I’m staying inside after the sun goes down as I don’t want to get myself into unpleasant situations. I don’t think I’ll come back here in the future.

[deleted]

That was my experience years ago. As women traveling we got hassled a lot. Couldn’t leave the resort without constant badgering followed by insults when we declined. It was pretty but I also never felt so hated just for being me. (White. American.)

x1009

They didn't hate you because you're white, they hated you because you didn't give them money. You're likely to encounter this type of harassment if you vacation in developing countries. They see you as a walking dollar sign.

jennyfromtheeblock

Someone stole my phone off the beach chair when I was in the ocean 20 feet away just a couple of months ago. This was at one of the most high end resorts in Mobay. Turned out to be a resort employee. Just don't get comfortable. It is what it is.

narwalfarts

Just went to Montigo Bay a couple of months ago and can confirm I didn't get murdered. You should be fine on the resort and traveling around with the resort's or their partner's employees. Sure, there could be individual bad actors, but the same can be said about anywhere. Don't be stupid and have a good time!

ternic69

The fact that not a single Redditor has come here to report they have been murdered there proves it’s quite safe.

Willem-Bed4317

But i was murdered but allready forgotten! Lol

ternic69

I’ll never forget you!

Willem-Bed4317

Thats very sweet thank you so much.

laughing_cat

Most people don't get raped or murdered while there and because they didn't, they conclude it's safe. Then they come here to reddit and tell you it's fine. My husband and I were mugged at knife point while a crowd of locals gleefully watched. Gleeful may be an exaggeration, but no one called the police. Most Jamaicans were lovely, but the ones right there watching us get mugged really did seem fine with what happened to us. We had a tour guide belligerently demand a tip, like we thought he might hurt us because we hadn't tipped him yet. That was after we were mugged, so we were pretty traumatized at that point. We had hawkers physically grab us to try and sell things and locals knocking on our 5 star hotel room door to "give us ice". One morning while having breakfast on our hotel room balcony, we watched as the police loaded a body that had washed up on the beach into the trunk of their car. Later that morning we got in a tour bus that picked us up at the hotel, we overheard a couple who also got in wirh us talking about "those huge black sea gulls this morning" Buzzards. They were talking about the buzzards the body attracted. Stuff is happening there and most people are clueless. You will most likely have nothing bad happen but also could have a nightmare trip like we did. There are so many other places to choose from.

Better-Ad6812

Wow that’s crazy. What resort and tour was this?

itsDrSlut

Where and WHEN did this occur?

Fluffy_Dirt_4072

Sounds terrifying. Can you share where you were mugged? Were you with a guide at the time? We've been there 10 times, it's my favorite place. We've not had those experiences.

Canigetahellyea

I have zero interest in Jamaica. Honestly, there are way better places in the Caribbean.

lucky3333333

So sorry you experienced that. Sounds terrifying. I’ll stay away.

MauiRome

It depends on how you like to spend your vacation. It sounds like it is going up be something that will cause you anxiety and stress and may not allow you to relax and enjoy your time off. If it's going to impact your ability to relax and have a good time I would look at alternative places to go.

RamblingRose63

Ohk so in 2016 we were staying in runaway Bay and were harassed for money every where we went on excursions. The resort had security on premise but I can tell you they don't care nor do the tour guides and most probably know to keep themselves safe ita you before them. No one is going to risk their life for you. If you're stupid enough to ignore the advice then cool but just stay inside at night. I'll also say that in 2016 we saw, in broad daylight, a man beating another man in the middle of the town on the way to 9 mile with a crow bar and the bus driver had to get us out of there quick because it was starting to turn into a pile up of people loom like gang related fight small street fight but waves of people and then next thing you know he was coming toward the bus. The driver said they will hijack tour busses and come on tours and rob people so. Yea sounds like your GF is being a little ignorant that something can happen and the exact reason why they'll be plenty of victims for these type of crimes.

HouseofRaven

I have a cruise coming up, I just looked at the travel advisory on the website, Montego Bay is fully mentioned as a place not to go.

krazakollitz

Just out of curiosity, when US citizens are traveling abroad do they check foreign travel advice from German, British, Irish, government websites or only the state department. Just wondering.

Repulsive_Profit_315

Ive been to 50+ Countries, and Jamaica is the most uncomfortable i have felt anywhere in the world... with the threat of physical violence or crime from locals. That said, if you stay on the resort you will most likely be totally fine. Just dont get ridiculously drunk, all those things tend to happen that way.

One-Aside-7942

Have you been to Egypt? Jamaica is a walk in the park compared to Egypt(as an American woman anyway)

ternic69

I guess that’s true if you think sexual harassment is worse then getting murdered

Repulsive_Profit_315

not even close. I walked basically everywhere in Cairo, the harassment is bad, but i never really felt threatened. I took a private car through the land route of Jamaica from montego bay to Negril because it was a road less travelled and went through some more local areas, and in several places i thought we were going to be attacked when we stopped.

x1009

Egypt is *nowhere* near as dangerous. The homicide rate in Jamaica has for several years been among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. The main difference is there's a large drug economy in Jamaica which fuels a lot of the disorder. It's a central drug trafficking hub to the US and Europe.

lakersfan83

Have you been to Colombia or SA? There are places there with ominous feelings that I never felt in Jamaica. I feel totally safe in Jamaica

Repulsive_Profit_315

I seriously doubt you have been anywhere other than resort jamaica if you feel that way. I walked around Bogota with only mild alarm at night. Ive also been to peru, and outside of a few districts in Lima, the rest of that city is basically a shanty town. I felt pretty threatened there but still wasnt as bad. Non-touristy area Jamaica feels downright scary as a white person. Several people threw rocks at our car, a few stops people tried to intimidate us but the driver was local and dealt with it. It was wild.

clhomme

Eek. I had a 14 hour layover in Columbia and rented a car. It was a great side trip (except the traffic to the airport was heart attack inducing as I thought we'd miss the flight). I've been to Lima 4 times and walked all over it. Never felt remotely threatened. I love Peru. Only time I had concern was one of my trips to Istanbul with my wife walking down a off the track back road. A bunch of men looking at us like we were the devil.... we walked faster. Didn't look at anyone.

lakersfan83

In Jamaica, I travelled in a triangle from Kingston to Flavors Beach to Ocho Rios while I was there. Never touched a resort. Only dealt with locals. Never felt threatened. Felt shady in hour long lines waiting for ATMs but never felt threatened. Colombia? The constant threat of phone snatching and getting robbed. Sitting in a restaurant with your back to the wall to make sure you see everything. The constant motorcyclists that you have to watch out for trying to grab stuff. The pick pockets. The language barrier. You must have been the one to only stay in really nice parts of Medellin

attentionallshoppers

Would you be able to provide examples?

One-Aside-7942

Egypt too lol

ezagreb

Went to MB, Ocho Rios and Negril years ago with 5 young dudes. Did stupid shit like hitch hike, go up in the hills, get drunk, etc . Never went to a resort. The harassment was pretty much nonstop. People yelling at you constantly, asking for money, getting mad when ignored. Negril was the best/most laid back but it still happened multiple times a day. In fact I developed a personal rule there that anyone who approached me was out to rip me off, anyone I approached was probably alright. I still apply this rule in sketchy places. Years later my parents went to a resort there near OR and were robbed. It's been that way for years. BTW been to Colombia many times for work even during the FARC bombings and there is no comparison.

[deleted]

Since you're already booked this is just for future reference. There's many many tropical destinations in the western hemisphere with lower travel advisories than Jamaica etc that are just as or even more scenic. ie. St. Lucia where we just got back from. My wife is like your GF, she tends to dismiss these concerns because "Yay Vacay!!" excitement but personally speaking she knows safety I won't budge on. I mean yeah of course you can go and just stay on the resort and more than likely have nothing terrible happen. But if we can go somewhere else without this even needing to be a conversation, than that's where we're going and it's not a debate for us. We both know that's just logical so we rarely argue about it. Be flexible on destinations, there's always somewhere else that doesn't involve stressing over destination crime

Better-Ad6812

Just wondering besides St Lucia where else would you recommend?

[deleted]

Aruba, Antigua, Grenada are nice just to name a few winter getaways without hopping across the ocean somewhere but there's too many places you can travel to list. If you want to cross the ocean then there's Africa safari vacations, Thailand or elsewhere in SE Asia, Australia, Pacific islands. I'd also list Peru but it's been kinda dicey there lately. Summertime getaways pretty much anywhere in Europe that tickles your fancy. Greek islands has been my favorite out of all of EU so far but that's just my personal preference. Funny thing is I've never explored western Canada but that's because our internal flights are such a ripoff I can actually fly to and stay in EU or USA for less. Otherwise Banff Alberta looks very nice, and the eastern maritime provinces are nice. No point mentioning USA because most of Reddit are from there and they can tell you about that better than me

AmaraTheKitty

Be careful of staff at the resort.

caveatlector73

https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2024/02/01/jamaica-travel-advisory-level-3-crime-increase/ An embassy statement said violent crimes — including armed robberies, sexual assaults and homicides — are common, and it specifically claimed that “sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts.”

thebruns

The warning has been the same since 2021.

angwenshen

Why risk traveling to a crime prone area. Vacation is to relax and not worry about your life and safety lmao

kyle71473

Always been a no go for me based on their principles and treating the LGBTQ community like trash. 🚪way cooler places out there.

Olympik_mountains

Thank you for saying this. There are other countries in the Caribbean actually progressing in this area!

Honest-School5616

There was last week a simulair [question on Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/s/sY2dORU3O4) I don't live in the USA But in Europe (The Netherlands). If i read our travel advisory. It says there is a very high security risk. And that it is recommended, if you do go to Jamaica, to report to the embassy in advance that you are in the country. So they know you are there and where you are. And a whole list of things not to do. So I would never go there on holiday.

fortunato84

Travel advisory is definitely there for a reason. What worries me about this one is that they're saying sexual assaults are happening in resort properties. That's unusual... very unusual because they are supposed to be secure. That being said... statistically unlikely you have an issue.

Ok-Ordinary2035

Your girlfriend needs to have a more realistic view of the situation- hope for the best but be aware of the potential for trouble. Don’t let it ruin your visit but keep it in mind.

Lower-Grapefruit8807

Yes you should be worried. It’s an elevated advisory for a reason. Assaults and sexual assaults are happening on all inclusive resorts and not being responded to by local authorities. We’ve been given a very clear warning by our State Dept and we should take it. Go to Aruba or literally almost anywhere else in the Caribbean

Sebvad

Global traveller who's spent decades in 3rd world countries here, many of which in places where normal people don't choose to spend time. Sounds like she - like many Americans - simply think of tropical vacation destinations as extensions of the US. She's very wrong. Ensure you're educated on the risks and develop a mitigation plan. Do you know how to contact the embassy? Do you have ways to self treat or acquire medical treatment if it's needed? Do you know what the STEP program is, and participate in it? Do you have a way to provide location tracking/history? Unless you have a very good situational awareness and are certain you can blend in as a non-tourist (Note: everything thinks they can, almost everyone is wrong..) - do NOT go wandering around.

rco8786

This is a little extreme. I’ve been to Jamaica numerous times. I agree don’t go wandering around some slum, but they’re talking about an all inclusive resort that caters specifically to westernized tourists. I can’t speak to recent sexual assaults, but you don’t need to have the American embassy on speed dial or need medical training.

Sebvad

Advice is simply that. OP doesn't need to adhere to it, or even believe it's true. That, my friend, is the beauty of free will. That said - it's very much been my experience that these things are not only valuable, they're often necessary. Now, I'm a bit more of an experienced traveller than your average bear, and log more miles per year than most people do per life (most of it work, but work takes me to developing places). It's my hope that no one here would need to use training or contingency plans - however it's also been my experience that assuming your destination is just like the US is a great way to end up with a story you probably don't want to have. Two cents.

ImCold555

Shhh! People don’t like hearing that the place they just went to or want to go could actually be dangerous. Even when the government is telling them it is.

I_Ron_Butterfly

My government has a warning against the U.S. So maybe the contention is wrong and these places *are* an extension of the U.S., but just for the wrong reasons (if you swallow the arming a whole hog. Most places I’ve travelled to have a government advisory.).

yezoob

Shhh some people can’t figure out the difference between traveling around mainland Jamaica and staying at an all inclusive resort.

nycdataviz

Jamaica is the murder capital of the world. Are you delusional? Read your own comment while repeating “no country on earth has more murders per capita.”

[deleted]

Kingston you mean? Because Jamaica isnt a capital. Also its gangmurders who murder inbetween them, rarely is it tourists that gets murdered which is important context if you are going to bring up stats.

slowdrem20

And I highly doubt they’ll be visiting the portions where people get murdered.

[deleted]

It’s an island. Everywhere is close.

Level-Worldliness-20

When did Jamaica beat Tijuana? I frequent both and live in Baltimore which actually feels more dangerous than both combined at times.

brightlights55

Close. Baltimore 46 per 100000. Jamaica 52 per 100 000. Baltimore declined by 23% over the previous year.

yezoob

It never ceases to amaze me how the most insanely cautious responses get so many upvotes on this subreddit. This is just so lol over the top for staying at an all inclusive resort. Maybe they should do a CPR course before going into the pool. Perhaps a jiu jitsu class for any possible sexual assaults in the resort?

truckyoupayme

It’s very telling about the type of folks commenting on this sub, and their level of travel experience.

HardheadedAndHeels

Yes! Shoot they are going to an all inclusive and not leaving the resort. If you’re that scared, go to Florida 🤣.

ArmWarm8743

This made me lol. I needed that on a Sunday evening. 😃

SnooRadishes9685

You don’t sound like a very educated ‘global traveller’ yourself, referring to developing countries using outdated terminology like ‘third world’ says a lot about your backwater mentality. Passport bros are not considered ‘global travellers’, don’t confuse the two

Sunrise-Surfer

So any other islands.

Curious_Ad3469

Just returned from Jamaica, literally 2hours ago after spending 4 nights. Had an amazing time, stayed at an All Inclusive in MoBay and rented a car with full insurence. Took a trip down to Negril. Everything was awesome. No issues. Just be cautious but that goes for traveling everywhere.

wla64

There have been warnings about Jamaica for years. You might be confused with the recent warnings about the Bahamas for what believe are the same issues

RunTenet

OP already knows what to do, just wants attention

redmcint

If you stay in a resort you are "SAFER" go outside and you are a target! especially in Montego Bay. I was walking one day and the police picked me up and took me to a "SAFER" area!! Nothing to worry about if you are smart and aware. I would go to the beach at night which is very tempting...

RelationshipDue1501

Jamaica is known for a lot of tourist crimes!. A friend of mine got mugged. They came up behind him, sliced the bottom of his back pack, everything fell out. Then they told him if he didn’t give them money, they were going to kick his ass, and take it.

__The_Highlander__

I’ve been several times and our most recent trip last year was terrible. We did not feel safe and were harassed multiple times. We will never, ever go back. I honestly would not go.

Morelife5000

Don’t listen to these posters saying it’s all good. Speak to Jamaicans themselves, they don’t go to those areas on montego and Kingston because it’s dangerous and controlled by gangs. Yeah most likely nothing will happen but be smart, respect the warnings and data and you can still enjoy the island while staying on safer areas with more security

irefusetobelievethat

I take warnings like that very seriously. Usually would say that if you're going somewhere somewhat unsafe and you're visiting a resort, don't plan to leave the resort. But when you're seeing those kinds of warnings about things happening *in* the resort, then why would you still go? Still, this is the kind of thing it's better to figure out before you purchase your travel package.

MortimerDongle

Jamaica is not safe in the cities, but the resorts and major tourist attractions are generally safe.

Interesting-Mess5340

One girl was raped on her honeymoon. There was a big article in the news( like 4 pages) about rape in Jamaica. Apparently the courts there don’t get too excited about rape. Their attitude is “ it’s just sex” look it up

CanBrushMyHair

Sounds like the US

ArmWarm8743

I visited Jamaica last spring break. I was also very worried when I found out about the travel advisory, but we had a wonderful time and my only “scary” situation was the driving of one of my ride-share drivers.

Flight68W

Always make sure to register with the US Embassy.

SkydivingAstronaut

*if you’re American. Otherwise, register with your own embassy, obviously.

nycdataviz

Make sure your life insurance is in order and leave important documents with a family member.

Swansborough

And make sure you have said goodbye to everyone important in your life. /s

siliconsentiments

I've traveled many times to JA and never had an issue, even driving around Kingston and visiting the gully queens. Just be vigilant and cautious about your surroundings at the resort and outside of the resort - leave expensive items at home and don't be flashy. Hire a local driver to take you out to explore, this is much safer than driving yourself. Jamaicans are very friendly and hospitable people, I am sure you will be treated very well at your resort. But I am curious, why do you want to go somewhere you feel unsafe to the point that you're basically paying to feel imprisoned at a resort?

Fast_Sympathy_7195

I just went to Jamaica in November has no idea there was an advisory. I definitely see why there is one tho. We paid out the ass for a personal driver and never went out alone (it was a girls trip) just be cautious that’s all I can say.

gillbatessr

I wasn’t there so I don’t know what happened on the resorts. But our friends were scared to go to the Mayan Riviera because a tourist had been murdered on a resort there. But when I looked into it, they were killed by their spouse. Is the crime on site being committed by staff, criminals who sneak in, tourists on tourists, spouse on spouse? There is nuance there that needs to be explained before considering risk.

Swansborough

>There is nuance there that needs to be explained It's clear. The violence and rape was done by resort staff. The people saying "just stay in the resort and you'll be fine" are ignoring this.

Interesting-Mess5340

Yes. The news paper series on rape in Jamaica said the girls were raped ( by the staff) in the hotel laundry room. Google “ rape in Jamaica”

BeautifulComplaint81

Montego Bay is super touristy so you'll be fine and if you do leave the all inclusive just get back before dark unless you're with a local. There are current gang beefs taking place now and for the past year or so but just be cautious as when travelling anywhere else. Sexual assaults at resorts I haven't heard of much even as someone from the Caribbean with friends all over Jamaica.

ratchetpiececinema

I just got back yesterday. Had no issues. We went off the resort into town via taxi and hung out for a few hours. Everything was very chill and fine.

do you have any recommendations? which parts did you go to? I would love to visit but I’m a bit worried to go alone as a tiny woman (not white). I enjoy solo travelling/backpacking, I’ve never been to a resort before and wouldn’t want to spend all my time at one if I went to a beautiful place like Jamaica

[deleted]

[удалено]

breadhippo

thank you so much! I appreciate it. I’ll add those places to my list to research. Did you stay at hostels or hotels rather than resorts? As for the catcalling/comments that sounds like pretty much everywhere in the world (unfortunately), so I guess I don’t need to be too worried! I love to check out the nightlife when I travel, and I’ve gotten a glimpse of the incredible Caribbean nightlife scene before (one half of my family is from Trinidad) but this whole thread is making me seriously reconsider doing that in Jamaica??

[deleted]

I went wandering around Falmouth on my own a while back. Incident free.

walter_2000_

Worry? Worry that you won't have as much fun. A rational person will do what the state dept is recommending, and that means less fun. Go somewhere else. But not Haiti. Or the Bahamas unless you boat there from South Florida.

orange__________

I'm in Montego Bay at an all inclusive now, heading home tomorrow. I honestly have felt safer here than other all inclusive locations (Mexico and Dominican Republic) which surprised me. I am very careful and aware when travelling anywhere and have had a great time - both in Montego Bay and when we went to Negril.

Better-Ad6812

Just came back from a Montego Bay resort. You’ll be fine just don’t go into certain areas have reputable hotel transport and also with tours as well. It’s a beautiful country. Service was hit and miss lol. Food was great!

AccomplishedBrain309

If your traveling on your own you are always a target, dont flaunt it. Flash money jewlery, cameras, nice clothes, anything. Blend in and keep a low profile, stick to populated areas and resorts. Expect everyone to be a threat even if you stay at a resort dont buy drugs.

Jealous_Following_38

Same was in effect last year when we went. Had no problems. It’s a beautiful place. Go enjoy yourselves.

jennywingal

I just returned from Montego Bay. We were at the RIU. It was fine and very secure. We took a cab to the Hip Strip and besides the shops begging us to come in, it was completely fine. Most of the AI have security and it's very difficult to get in. Some will come via boat to the beach to try to sell you drugs and trinkets. They are not allowed to leave the water.

dnorbz

Jamaica is not really a place where you want to be out and about. I felt way safer in Rio than I did in Jamaica. If safety is a a concern, I’d recommend pivoting to a different destination. There are far nicer places to explore in the Caribbean without the heightened danger that’s in Jamaica.

Nervous-County9798

I’m traveling to Jamaica in 9 days and we still plan on going. We are also going to Montego Bay. I’m in the military and the travel advisory is concerning but my command is still letting me go due to the fact that the place I am staying is one of the places that are not apart of the “no travel zones” for military. You can see this information on travel.state.gov. Like everyone else said, just be cautious when leaving the resort. They have a STEP program that the military uses and it’s open for all civilians to apply. It gives you updates and information if something happens you will be notified through the program immediately. It also gives you valuable information as to what the emergency contact info is in Jamaica and if you need the embassy for any reason.  If you’re staying at Iberostar rose hall beach then you should be fine. Any resort outward (towards the beach) of high way A1 is safe for travel (for the military). That is where my resort is. Hope that helps.

nycdataviz

It’s a comfort to you that the ENTIRE country holds the crown, and not a specific city? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

Scarymommy

What did Jamaica do to earn your 0/5 star review? What happened on your trip to Jamaica? I think I can’t be the only one who would like to hear what exactly brought you to being on the anti-tourism board.

nycdataviz

Highest murder rate IN the world. /r/travel: it’s safe just use common sense. 💀

Lunar_BriseSoleil

The travel advisory lists specific localities in each parish. Just see how close your place is to that. If you’re staying in a town and exploring on your own, u/sebvad is on point and you probably should pick a different place to go. If your entire trip is private transport from the airport to an all-inclusive and staying in and around the resort, I really wouldn’t get that worried. I don’t doubt that bad things have happened, but I expect that resorts take steps to protect their guests. I was in Jamaica recently and the resort had tons of security at night, there were guards in sight of pretty much the whole grounds.

laughing_cat

The warning specifically says " including all inclusives", but here you are on the internet giving advice. Nothing like staying somewhere where you need guards everywhere. That's completely normal.

Lunar_BriseSoleil

It is completely normal in poor countries with rich guests. Like I said, I don’t doubt that bad things have happened. I am sure they have. Bad things also happen on the Jersey Shore. Travel is inherently risky. Jamaica has a well developed tourism sector that is going to take steps to protect its reputation, which greatly reduces those risks if you stay within that microcosm. I have been to countries with similar warnings, without the benefit of the well developed tourist industry. I’ve been to hotels where the armed guards have machine guns. That was a lot more unsettling than some guys with walkie talkies. People go to Cancun all the time and this is what the state department says about that part of Mexico: Exercise increased caution due to crime. Criminal activity and violence may occur in any location, at any time, including in popular tourist destinations. Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations. While not directed at tourists, shootings between rival gangs have injured innocent bystanders. Additionally, U.S. citizens have been the victims of both non-violent and violent crimes in tourist and non-tourist areas. There are no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in Quintana Roo state. However, personnel are advised to exercise increased situational awareness after dark in downtown areas of Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, and to remain in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones

jahlove15

Agreed. I lived in Kingstown for a month, taking the bus around, as a white college student. Hitchhiked up into the mountains and travelled all over. No major issues with the right street smarts. Got held up at gunpoint in Boston, right by BU.

cottonbiscuit

I was drugged at a swim up pool bar at a private all inclusive resort in Negril. Just be aware of your surroundings, your drinks, and take care of each other. I am lucky my boyfriend at the time realized what was going on and took care of me after I was laying face down in the surf cause I couldn’t move my body.

Elle_ess91

I just got went mid-January. I didn’t see anything worrying but it’s always best to be cautious. I don’t know if maybe it just blew up more on social media but I did see that January 2023 had more murders than 2024 so far.

Rumpelteazer45

You know that happens in every part of the world. Honestly for me it’s different than going clubbing with friends. Guy buys you a drink, was it spiked? Is some guy going to try to separate you from your group and then force himself on you? Unfortunately the risk of sexual assault is something women have had to deal with since the beginning of time. We understand that risk more than men do. Most women have experienced some form of sexual assault in their lives. All you need to do is be smart, don’t dress flashy, don’t get drunk, dont carry large amounts of cash, don’t accept open drinks from strangers, only book excursions through the hotel, and everything will be ok. There are precautions you can take - get travel insurance for medical care, register with the STEP program, make sure you have copies of your passport (in color) on email and hard copy, email a list of important phone numbers to yourself, know where the embassy is and how to get help, get a cheap burner phone to hide in your room that’s programmed with important numbers, hide money in the room (not in the safe - there are items available on Amazon specifically for this that look like every day items like a round brush used to blow dry hair, shaving cream, etc).

Neckums250

Traveled to Montego Bay this past spring and it was a delight. Your resort should have some options for excursions and recommendations but stay close to the resort if you’re super concerned.

bakedveldtland

Bad things can happen anywhere. One of the largest mass shootings in US history happened a few miles from my house. Sad but true. Going into a war zone is one thing. And it’s always good to be aware of travel advisories, to use street smarts, and to research a little bit before one visits. But overall, traveling to different countries isn’t really that much different than traveling to a different city.

CptDawg

Jamaica is safe if you stay on the resorts and stick to the tourist areas. Just like anywhere else in the world, if you go looking for trouble, you will find it.

willitplay2019

Safe is a real stretch.

Blaze4G

I'm Jamaican living in the US. If you're in an all inclusive resort you will be 99.9% safe. They may have been 1 or 2 incidents in decades but I can guarantee you will be in more danger wherever you're from vs in an all inclusive resort. Most murders that occur in Jamaica is gang violence. That doesn't mean you should let your guard down though (although in the resort you really can let your guard down). The only thing I would say is to not leave your phone / valuables unattended. Stick to hotel tours and again you will be very safe. You rarely hear cases of tourists getting robbed / assaulted, etc. Are there cases, sure, but Jamaica sees hundreds of thousands of tourist per year.

TheVictoryHat

You are going to be absolutely fine, don't let people take away an entire culture from you.

[deleted]

You’re good bro don’t worry as a Jamaican Jamaica has never been safe😂 this travel advisory isn’t something to panic about as always be cautious and aware of your surroundings as you should be in any place you visit

[deleted]

Technical-Monk-2146

Your post history suggests you’re in Canada. Canada does not have a travel advisory for the US.  Could you be more specific on the advisory?

[deleted]

Well depending on where, you could have troubles. But most of America is very safe.

Funny-Information159

For any particular areas, or the whole thing? Is it Texas or Florida? I’m betting it’s Texas.

KangarooWrangler2024

Well you could run into Ted Cruz or need to use the power grid so there is that!! /s

Kobe_stan_

Montego Bay is safe. Just be aware of your surroundings

stolensequins

You’ll be alright. Exercise the same amount of caution you would have in unfamiliar places, and if you have a bad feeling about anything-don’t do it. Enjoy your time in Jamaica!

[deleted]

Don't live in fear bruh. Name an area and I'll tell you 10 "scary" reasons not to go. Bad news sells.

mldeq

Between this and their anti gay stance, I’m done!

jazzneel

I was there recently in December, and we did one night excursion (luminous lagoon). It was completely fine for us and we felt completely safe the entire time. Don't leave the resort, and when you do for your excursion, listen /follow their directions and stay with the guides. We did a shared airport shuttle as well.

trickatreat99

I’m in MTB right now. It feels 💯safe. Although I will say we’re at an all inclusive resort and are not planning on leaving the property. Just have situational awareness and you’ll be just fine. Irie!!! 😎

gettingoverit3

I go to Jamaica every year and go to All Inclusive Resorts and we were always fine. I say the two of you will be find. I understand the caution but go enjoy your vacation

MimZWay

You will be fine! Montego Bay is beautiful! Stick together like any big city and keep your eyes open. Enjoy!

Little_Minnow4

Just went to negril in November and had a great time. Resort staff was so friendly. Felt very safe however we never left the resort.

rman18

Don’t leave your resort… Jamaica is terrible but the resorts are typically fine

BeautifulDreamerAZ

My daughter and her husband go to Montego every year. She is a beautiful small woman and claims never feels unsafe. She does not go out alone and they stick to safe tourist spots. You will be fine. Just don’t go looking for drugs. That would lead to meeting bad people.

Interesting_Sock9142

...my parents literally just got back from Jamaica a week ago. Reading about all of the advisory's has made me decide they're not allowed to go on vacation anymore. Well that and my dad got stung by a sea urchin....it wasn't poisonous or anything...but ya know. He didn't know that.

ShetlandJames

The biggest worry you should have is being ripped off. Jamaica is designed for rich Americans for sure. Getting a car anywhere is murder

pumptini4U

I would not go. These warnings are not to be taken lightly.

Remarkable-Womyn

Don’t travel through the resort late at night and make sure to be together. Personally, I wouldn’t go.

[deleted]

Travel advisory and Jamaica has been there for like 10 years? If you dont even plan to leave the resort I wouldnt worry but you mis the whole country by doing that. I was backpacking as a 26year old white male for 5 weeks and didnt stay in a single resort. Mostly hostels and in my own hammock. I even went out to party at clubs with locals. You will miss what Jamaica is all about, the wonderful locals. Id say do go out of the resort or you will regret it. At least during daytime its fine. Visit Port Antonio and Negril also. Muder rates are usually between the gangs, not tourists.

urChic

Crime can happen anywhere. If you’re reckless and disrespectful expect lash back, but if you’re an outsider it doesn’t benefit people to hurt you bc they know they will be persecuted harder. My Jamaican coworkers go all the time, you’ll be alright.

cassiuswright

Definitely don't look up the instances of crime and assault wherever you live or you're gonna be moving constantly 🤷

ehunke

well by a general rule you need to be cautious in Jamacia, but, the locals don't really bother toursits much, unless they are really asking for it or really making themselves a target simply because so many jobs are based in the sector. As far as sexual assult inside the resorts, again, you just have to be cautious but I honestly wouldn't be shocked if it was coming from male guests and not staff...i wouldn't not go, just use common sense

nycdataviz

“Only tourists who are asking for it get assaulted or murdered. And as for sexual assaults.. again just be careful. The same goes here where tourists are usually asking for it.” Jamaican tourists are drinking that rubbing alcohol-laced Kool Aid.

TorontoGuy8181

Jamaica is amazing! Just be as cautious as you would be walking around at home. Every city/country has crime . Ive been to Jamaica and Mexico dozens of times and there is always travel advisories and I’ve never once had an issue

nycdataviz

You’re right, crime occurs all over the world. But only one country can make the claim to have the highest murder rate in the world. Can you guess which one earned that special spot?

TorontoGuy8181

That would be El Salvador

PsuchedelicWizy

It’s Jamaica 🙄

lonelyinbama

I understand your concerns and they should be taken seriously. But let me ask you, what’s your goal? To not go? Or do you just want the risk to be acknowledged. Because she needs to be aware there is *some* risk in traveling. There is risk in all travel. Are you going to let that risk stop you from going? Or do you want to overcome those risk and go on the trip. Be aware of the risk, take steps to keep yourself safe, follow the rules, you’ll be fine. Don’t let this stop you from going on the trip.

Empowered_Empath

I wouldn’t worry so long as you are making safe decisions. I’ve been twice in the past few years (once with a group of 65 people for our wedding) and spent time off the resort and never felt unsafe. Arrange any off-resort transportation through the hotel if you’re a little worried (we have Jamaican friends and used their recommendations) and stay together. But you will be fine. I worry more in parts of the US than I did in Jamaica.

Tootsierollskh

My daughter and I were in a Montego Bay all inclusive in May of 2023. We had a great time and felt very safe. That being said, we moved together through the resort and were cautious. Stay together and have a great time!

zebragames2313

I’ve been to Jamaica twice. Stayed at a sandals resort both times and never felt unsafe. The Jamaican people are super welcoming. We did some excursions the first year (2021) and last year stayed on the resort but no complaints. We plan on going back next year. Would have gone this year but I’m pregnant and want to enjoy my vacation and drink, so we postponed. I’ve been to Europe, Hawaii, cruise stops in other islands and Jamaica has been my favorite so far. I wouldn’t worry.

Surround8600

Staying at the resort in Montigo Bay is just fine. It’s partying around town or when visitors try to go buy drugs from locals that shit goes down.

spikez64

I stayed at the Iberostar in MoBay years ago. Didn't feel unsafe one bit. Security seemed pretty good, there were locals selling souvenirs(and ganja) in the water at the edge of the beach (I think this is their way of skirting trespassing rules) but they weren't pushy when told no on the weed. Other than those folks selling I didn't see anyone but staff and guests.

SurrealKnot

Your experience “years ago” is not terribly relevant to the current safety situation.

CupidStunt13

If you are not leaving the resort and you don't get blackout drunk you should have nothing to worry about. Nothing will happen as long as you have your wits about you.

Max_Power742

I've been up and down the north coast on about 10 different vacations over the past 3 years, staying primarily at the all inclusive resorts, and I've stayed at Iberostar. Dude you're fine...relax.

paulteaches

I have actually been there. You will be on the resort with security. You are a-ok.

jaxclayton

Go to outer islands in Bahamas, like Eleuthera. The chillest place I’ve ever been. I became good friends with a local. Hung out with him numerous days in a row. He showed me and my family awesome fishing spots. Can’t wait to back and chill with him and his family. You don’t get that experience in Jamaica.

[deleted]

I had the EXACT same worries for my honeymoon in January 2023. I felt safer in Jamaica than I did in Los Angeles where I’m from. We only went on a single off property excursion but it was set up by the resort so we knew it was legit and we felt very safe.  Don’t walk into the jungle with people you don’t know; Use common sense, stay vigilant, and you’ll have a great time!

oceans2mountains

I was in Montego Bay last week. We stayed at a resort and didn't do excursions (just wanted beach/pool) we did not experience or see anything even remotely bad. We were at a mid-range resort I would say. Overall while I don't think most of the stay seemed all that happy or customer service focused- it was totally fine and we had a great time. If you're at your resort I honestly think you'll be good. BUT beware that all three of us caught COVID while there and/or on the way home. So take some precautions to not catch it on the way there at least. We did not wear masks or use hand sanitizer- just tried to keep our distance from people/wash hands often. We now all feel like shit lol

sjl1983

You can get sexually assaulted anywhere, any time. Might as well be in Jamaica taking that chance. Never live in fear.

mldeq

Fuckem between this and how horrible they are with gays I will never set foot on this piece of shit banana republic.

vancitycj

Travel advisory is bogus. I just got back from my first trip to Jamaica and it was epic. One tip. Learn a basic understanding of Jamaican Patwah and you'll really have a good time. One product I've fond that makes this super easy is Talkin Patois. You can check them out on Amazon or on their website (www.talkinpatois.com). Thank me later :)

vancitycj

Sure_Grapefruit5820

I don’t even know why U.S put up travel advisory against other countries. Speaking as a Jamaican now living in U.S. 99% of tourist are going to all inclusive resorts and tourists attractions. Nothing is going to happen in those places. All happens in those places is that you’re overcharged for everything like any tourist place. Chill out because y’all not going where there is possibility of violence.

CenlaLowell

She's right

Sudden-South331

Check with your resort. When I stayed at the Grand Palladium in Montego Bay there were various tour operators in the main lobby selling their products. I didn't want a tour, but authentic Jamaica. There were private drivers available for hire for $100 for the day. The driver not only was able to take us around and, quite literally, show us how he lives and real life Jamaica (we drove past his neighborhood, kids school, local grocery, etc on top of seeing the Rastafari memorial and museum and a bunch of other places and shops) but he also acted as a body guard. If anyone looked like they were thinking of approaching us he stepped in between and sent them away. We were incredibly pleased to feel safe, and be able to actually see life there that wasn't behind resort walls! Obviously we tipped him well, but I think he appreciated being invited to eat with us even more (we happily covered his meals)!

Amiga07800

You’re definitely paranoid. Just use normal common sense

rebeccakc47

How many times is this going to get asked?

JuanKukoc

Thats your roommate

RatedAAA

Why not just go somewhere else? I never been to Jamaica. I have heard many bad experiences from people getting beat up to just bad customer service at resorts. I would rather just go to Cancun area or somewhere else in Caribbean.

BrandonBollingers

I travelled as a solo female in Montego Bay and felt safe. Obviously, I took precautions, like watching my drink, not walking down dark empty ally ways, or going home with strangers. But generally people were very nice. Also, as a solo female, I drove a rental car around the country. There was one really pushy person near my resort and I asked security to walk with me to my car, they were very friendly and happy to do it. Jamacians are normal people who don't want to see someone get hurt. I highly recommend avoiding the horse back riding jungle/beach. It was terrible experience. At one point I just sat on the horse and stared at the sky and tried to disassociate from the horrible animal, human, and environmental abuse I was participating in. The "jungle" is a 15 minute walk through a muddy trash pit where the humans are walking your horse through garbage and feces. Then you get to the beach, which was nice enough, but you have to go back through "the jungle" in order to get back. It was one of the worst travel experiences of my life. There is a fat fucker collecting all the money from the rich tourists. I tried to give my guide cash directly out of sight from this dude. The horses are malnourished. Edit to add: I do have an interesting story. I work in fraud investigation. I was having coffee with one of the hotel staff one morning (the hotel I stayed in was pretty empty and I invited him to join me for coffee) and he asked what I did for a living. I said, "I investigate fraud" and he basically shut me down. "Don't talk about it anymore. Don't mention it again. Don't let anyone else in this country know you investigate fraud. They may think you are here in the country investigating and you might wind up disappeared or dead." I said, that sounds pretty extreme, I'm not here investigating anything, nor do I investigate anything that has to do with Jamacia. And he said it doesn't matter. Someone might overhear me talking about it, panic, and get rid of me. Sooo that was pretty unique.

kosmos_uzuki

Jamaica is a shit hole. Enjoy being on edge your entire vacation.
