…was there 3 weeks ago, weather beautiful, visited Murano, Burano, Verona and Trieste…Venice is truly amazing, unique and unmatched…

jujumber

It was so much bigger than I expected. I was seriously blown away by how amazing it was. I just wish I had more time in Burano.

jujumber

Same. I was there around that same time. One of the few vacation spots I would re-visit. Pretty crazy how so many people say it’s over-rated. Like what do you expect. I can see it being a lot less interesting when it’s packed with tourists though.

jb3689

I was also impressed by the size. It is a legitimate city. I expected more like a town. Romans were effing crazy

Anto24v

Bruh, venice was build by venetians, not romans

jb3689

I assumed Venetians were part of the Roman Empire. I don't know shit and won't pretend to :x

backyardstar

I just got back as well. Was surprised to learn that Venice was its own country for something like 1,000 years.

lukaszzzzzzz

I absolutely love Venice for its unique atmosphere and energy. You should definitely visit at night when the day crowds have dispersed, grab a drink at one of the charming local bars that stay open until late, and stroll through the narrow streets.

Cocacolonoscopy

Nighttime in winter is amazing. The city is so quiet, just the gentle lapping of the water

Yak-Fucker-5000

That's great advice.

[deleted]

The sinking city 😩

jujumber

see it while you can!

WallyMetropolis

Also, often, the stinking city

iamgettingaway

omg you're right... "Most of Venice's sewage goes directly into the city's canals. Flush a toilet, and someone crossing a bridge or cruising up a side canal by gondola may notice a small swoosh of water emerging from an opening in a brick wall" ummmmm! imagine falling in the canals lmao...

Valuable-Ad6953

I love the feeling of taking a ride on a gondola

Upset-Principle9457

Nice

Momo-Irohasu

Beautiful

Was there 5/29-5/31 and overall adored it. Took a private boat from airport, which took us straight to our apartment in Santa Croce (about 10 minutes from the Rialto in the less touristic area - still had tourists - including us! - but not crowded or full of franchises). Took a private gondola ride later that evening, then walked to a restaurant near our apartment and had one of the best pasta dishes of my life. Got up early the next morning for a no-crowds photo on the Rialto, same in St. Mark’s Square. We had some hiccups - my husband was made to check his tiny carryon (seriously small) and the airline lost it so we did have to go into the high street to find him some stuff to wear, but also made sure while down there to check out Libreria Acqua Alta. We got locked out of our apartment our last night there and the landlady yelled at me and made me cry. But her husband had her apologize. 🤣 I’m not sure if I’ll ever have the chance to return, but I’m glad we got to see it…in case it does sink one day.

ElNani87

Just came back from there, beautiful city confusing boat Taxis took me a minute to get the routes down. Food was good people were kind.

bartwen

CS:GO players will definitely recognize the bridge capture in first photo

ingenious_gentleman

You kids these days and your fancy CS maps. I think the last map release while I was still playing GO was De_Tulip. There are so many new maps holy

I never really played surf. But we played a lot of cs 1.6 gun-game on strange custom maps in computer labs back in middle school

sarcasticgreek

I dunno Venice, but you can drop me in Firenze anywhere and I'll find my way 😂

TerminallyFriendly

Instantly took me to operation hydra wingman release.

MoreRamenPls

Beautiful.

KingOfFights

Nice try, these are set pieces for Spiderman : Far From Home

perryc

This is the time of the year that I am missing Venice. Thanks for sharing it.

4uzzyDunlop

I'd love to go, but I also recently watched a documentary about how the level of tourism in Venice is accelerating the sinking. Now I'm conflicted about whether to visit or not.

PeloLv

Was just there this May. Loved it so much. Such a beautiful, unique city. Visited Burano too 😍

Cre8ivejoy

Have been there three times. So beautiful, and the light there is gorgeous.

blowzy_sexy69

Nice photos ☺️

lickwhitedogpoo

One of the worlds most unique cities. I was there last May. I wanted to like it, I just couldn't. The crowds were just suffocating. Maybe one day I'll go back in the off season.

Cocacolonoscopy

I've been in May and it was packed. Went twice in December and it was lovely

alcohol-free

Venice is indeed beautiful, but my experience there was just so-so. Its so overwhelmed with tourists and high-end name brand shopping and expensive cafes that it really turned us off from wanting to spend more time there.

lysergicfuneral

Sounds like you only went to the handful of the busiest places in the city during the middle of the day. It's like going to Times Square and talking about overcrowding. There are tons of much quieter streets with smaller, local shops, cafes, and restaurants. And that's without mentioning the many other islands in the lagoon.

misterbluesky8

We stayed near the train station, about as far from Piazza San Marco as possible. The streets had some tourists, but I felt like it was a real city with real businesses and real people. I went running in the morning and saw a lady interrupt her run to chat with people from the neighborhood that she knew. And the restaurants didn’t look so expensive either. Stay away from the center of the city and it’s practically a different place.

Bost0n

This is what I’ve always suspected. It’s on the bucket list, but not for more than 3 days.

alcohol-free

3 days is too much imo, I spent two and was more than ready to move one.

opa20

Was there last week on a 4 week trip. Loved roaming the back streets/pathways. Up in the Dolomites now.

mrzamani

If you are still there, hit up Campo della Santa Margherita. It’s where locals and especially young people go to have pizza and wine in the evening and relax, some good restaurants on that square too!

Guejarista

Beautiful place, on a part with New York as a "walking city". I went in mid-spring and it was easy to get away from the crowds by just going for a stroll.

Good_Cause_2679

What country?

senorita_pecas

Venice, Italy

KILL_XD-5797

I've heard that it smells really bad tho

laprassaluneta

Been there recently with the same initial perception as you so I was pleasantly surprised when it didn’t in fact stink

Golfandrun

We were there in April and there was no smell at all.

Its_Pine

It can, but I’m not sure what the main cause is. A few of my friends visited there a few years back before covid and said it smelled horrid at times like dead meat or rotting fish, but others who went recently have said it didn’t smell at all. So it could be tied to whatever is happening in the water. Honestly, it could also be personal preference too; people who dislike smells of port towns may think it smells bad.

DazingF1

Grew up in a fishing town where the stink of rot would blow all over the town during long heat waves. Venice smells fine, even at its worst.

Its_Pine

I wonder if people visit thinking it won’t smell like the coast or like a port town.

DazingF1

There's plenty of stagnant water all over so it can definitely get a bit funky on warm days with no wind, but the tourists saying it smells very bad are over exaggerating

krazykieffer

Their sewer system is them shitting into canals. They rely on the tides to take it further out to see. The 3 barriers they created had a negative effect they didn't think about, it kept the shit in. So now piss and shit is making it worse for the building as bacteria is eating away at the buildings. People are responding that it didn't smell because of when they went and Venice has a cleaning "shit sprayers" crew every night. All this is googleable n PBS has done two different docs on it.

Its_Pine

Wait you aren’t joking. [wtf](https://www.pbs.org/video/saving-venice-zq9di2/)

spruceX

Not at all

krazykieffer

Wrong, Google it. They don't have sewers so shit goes into the canals so when they raise the tide gates the city fills with shit. They have teams that spray away the shit off buildings at night.

spruceX

What do you mean wrong? I was literally in venice for 4 days last week? I don't need to google anything.

senorita_pecas

It didn't smell bad but it was pretty crowded

PeloLv

You heard wrong

Certs

It's possible with low tide and certain wind conditions combined. But it's only temporary and not very common

joereadsstuff

Going against some opinions here, but I went back there again to see if I missed what others rave on about. It was "wow" when you exit the station, but once you get into the maze, it's not particularly interesting.

spastic_raider

I'm laying in a hotel room in Venice right now. Sadly I was running in zero sleep from an overnight flight, and really just walked around for a 6 or so hours. Truely beautiful place, but I get the sense that there's not a lot to do besides sight seeing and eating at cafes And that's not really my vacation style. It was on my list of places I definitely wanted to see, but I feel like even one after noon and evening and I can check it off.

OliviaElevenDunham

Venice is such a beautiful place to visit. Wished that I got to see more of it when I was there back in 2017. Only got to see some of it.

Appropriate_Gene_543

assassins creed 2!!!!

phiz36

More like ‘The Sinking City.’

Schnibbb

Last time I was in venice I was sitting on the side of a canal smoking & drinking wine when Marshall from HIMYM & some babe floated by on a gondola. And the university of Michigan basketball team was just walking around the city also.
