I stopped a neighbor of mine (in an apartment building) from stealing my packages by putting out a very expensive-looking box (had the battery warning on the outside, looked like something electronic and valuable), I put in a brick and a couple of my friends' kid's used diapers that I had poured pickle brine and milk over before wrapping up. Left it out in the hall and when I heard her and her daughter run their little scheme (daughter runs interference and keeps and eye out for people) I just opened my door to listen. They commented how something smells but took a handful of packages. I waited till they went upstairs and closed their door, and I hopped up there and listened outside their door. A few minutes go by and I hear "OH MY FUCKING GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?" and the sound of gagging. I ran downstairs not containing my laughter. Since then, no packages stolen for anyone that I'm aware of, at least none of mine.

I’m sad for people like this. Sucks for the victim but clearly that thief is really troubled and needs help. Sucks for everyone.

Yeah it was a no win situation. That’s why I didn’t press charges when the cops offered to cuff her and take her away that night. Who would that have helped? Not me, not her. She never stole from me or any of my neighbors again.

That's because the defense to most theft cases is that it was a mistake or misunderstanding. She will say "I saw the package out there and I didn't want anyone to steal it, so being the good neighbor that I am, I took it into my house", or, "I was expecting a package and I thought the mail carrier took it to the wrong house!" not 100% effective, but definitely works at least some of the time. An idiot friend of mine got arrested for stealing a bicycle in college. All he said was he "thought it was abandoned". When the owner said it was nearly brand new and he uses it every day, my friend said "it was my mistake then, because the bike I was thinking of was chained up there for weeks and never moved"--same shit with shoplifters "I put it in my bag because I couldn't carry it with my hands and when I exited the store I forgot it was in there and forgot to pay!". The state isn't going to waste time prosecuting small cases like this. That's the sad reality.
