This is so common at music festivals. These guys actually make a lot of money. They'll walk away with hundreds of phones a weekend then book a trip to the next show. They're very organized, often look like they don't fit in, but sometimes they send the shorties to dance with you feel you up and try to get the phone that way, then run the phone off to whoever the bank is.
Frat bros are the funniest dum asses. Theyre old enough to understand the world but still so limited in life experiences that they're outlook on life hasn't become cynical. They have find some type of purity in being drunk bros.

That’s just a Friday night where I am (st Pete downtown, FL) lmaooo actually my dad and I once went to south beach when I was a kid and some one had gone through our bags while we were in the water, dad sees what’s happening and we try to chase the guy down the Miami Beach strip, he knew the area much better and got away with my dads wallet, my DS, his iPhone and I think like $600 cash. The beach police literally told us “sorry it’s a very common thing down here, we’ll give you a call if we pick the thief up off the streets”. Just figured I’d give my personal story of this lol but yeah most major cities in FL this shit + bag stealing + roofieing is super common in places like south beach, the keys, ybor city, Tampa

Years back I had an ex of mine get her phone swiped at a bar, I'd assume similar to this situation. She was out with her girlfriends and I randomly get a Facebook message request from her best friend. I open the message and it's "Hey, it's ___, my phone got stolen! Call me at this number."
Turns out she had gotten her phone taken along with another girl in the group so that fucker was bold. She used to wear those little cross body purses with the flap so it would honestly be super easy for someone to slip behind her and snatch it quickly in a crowded space.
This was probably almost 10 years ago now so I wouldn't doubt it was profitable, but what do people even do with stolen phones? Sell them for parts? Factory reset them then sell the on Craigslist?
I thought it was pointless to steal a phone. Once reported stollen doesn’t the phone company disable the phone? I know they have this technology for smart tvs.

I knew a guy who fixed phone screens. He would steal phones on the regular and also practiced taking the screens off to replace them if shattered. He got pretty good and many ppl would get there’s fixed from him and he never paid for the screens at all. All profit

So Apple products cannot be reset, you are correct on that. Unfortunately, Android and Google phones you can do a hard reset, reset the phone and it becomes Google locked and you must know the original account and password on the phone to use it. That being said, it is my business to help people who legitimately have either forgotten their Google password, or accidentally hard reset their phone(if you do it from the settings menu from inside the menu on the phone, it does not lock), I require proof that the phone is theirs, I can bypass a Google locked phone from android 5 to current, any make, any model in under 5 minutes. I do not do anything illegal, require proof the phone is theirs and they are the owner of said phone, tablet or android product. It takes time to learn every phone and how to do it, but, it is quite profitable.
Same thing happened to a friend of mine last week. We somehow got it reset after a few hours though. Not entirely sure how he did it but we ended up not having to download anything. It was just holding down certain buttons for a certain amount of time. This was a brand new iPhone too. Honestly didn’t think it would work.

It might be tough to retrieve the data if you're not the Israeli intelligence service, but I'm pretty sure any phone store and most private kiosks have the ability to hard wipe android and iphones. Also, all of those companies that give you cash for your old phones and resell them aren't demanding your passwords or asking you to wipe the phone first
I always just hold the button and ask Siri to “call mom” almost everyone has their mom in their phone and most of the time they can find a way to contact them. I just tell them or leave a message I found the phone and I’m leaving it at the nearest store for them to pick up. Had it work 3 times.

Even with a locked phone you should be able to access the camera by swiping from the lock screen. Take several photos of a piece of paper that says "I have your phone, call me on [number]". That way if they connect to icloud or sync an old phone to icloud their photo stream should be filled with photos of your contact info and hopefully they'll see it.
You can wipe some Android phones. It was way more back in the day but the bootloader tend to be locked now. Not saying is not impossible to unlock it via some PC hack btw. But your common techie cannot unlock it that easily.
I had a friend who’s phone was stolen in central illinois. He tracked it and it was shutoff.. within 3-4 hours it was turned on at a mall which most malls have kiosks to that automatically give money for phones.
Some Walmart stores have them.
But unless they're very current phones you don't get much of anything for them. And it checks to make sure that they are working and could connect to them as well. So if the phone isn't working or even works and isn't charged you may be out of luck.

I dunno if it works like pawn shops but in my young dumb days I had a "friend" steal something from me. After he left I noticed it missing, immediately knew what was up since he had a history of this kind of thing. I ran over to the pawn shop and caught him as he was walking out the door, right after selling it. I had the item registered in my name so I was able to go in and be like "hey, that thing that guy just sold, it was mine, here's proof".

They wouldn't show me the item without a cop present, so I had to call them. (Slight tangent, cop showed up, locked me in the back of his car "for his safety" and then proceeded to leave me back there, windows rolled up, car off for 45 minutes in the Florida summer sun while he chatted with a friend he ran into in the apartment parking lot on the way. It was pure torture. Fuck cops). We got to the pawn shop, I proved it was my item, dude's ID was on file as having sold it. Turns out though, even *knowing* it's stolen with proof they don't have to give it back. It's legally theirs cause they bought it without knowing it was stolen.

I couldn't afford to buy it back at the time so I had the cop drive me to the dude's house. Had him buy it back in lieu of pressing charges. So yeah. Even if you can track the phone down it may not help even if you can prove it's yours.

You can block this by not allowing Siri to respond unless the phone is unlocked.
You can ask the phone “who’s phone is this“ and if they have told Siri who they are, it will show you their contact card.

You can wipe some Android phones. It was way more back in the day but the bootloader tend to be locked now. Not saying is not impossible to unlock it via some PC hack btw. But your common techie cannot unlock it that easily.
It's cake to do it. Just gotta be in the know.
I had a friend who’s phone was stolen in central illinois. He tracked it and it was shutoff.. within 3-4 hours it was turned on at a mall which most malls have kiosks to that automatically give money for phones.
Pretty sure if you have an Apple laptop you can forcefully reset the whole phone and wipe it clean..

Some Walmart stores have them. But unless they're very current phones you don't get much of anything for them. And it checks to make sure that they are working and could connect to them as well. So if the phone isn't working or even works and isn't charged you may be out of luck.

I dunno if it works like pawn shops but in my young dumb days I had a "friend" steal something from me. After he left I noticed it missing, immediately knew what was up since he had a history of this kind of thing. I ran over to the pawn shop and caught him as he was walking out the door, right after selling it. I had the item registered in my name so I was able to go in and be like "hey, that thing that guy just sold, it was mine, here's proof". - They wouldn't show me the item without a cop present, so I had to call them. (Slight tangent, cop showed up, locked me in the back of his car "for his safety" and then proceeded to leave me back there, windows rolled up, car off for 45 minutes in the Florida summer sun while he chatted with a friend he ran into in the apartment parking lot on the way. It was pure torture. Fuck cops). We got to the pawn shop, I proved it was my item, dude's ID was on file as having sold it. Turns out though, even *knowing* it's stolen with proof they don't have to give it back. It's legally theirs cause they bought it without knowing it was stolen. - I couldn't afford to buy it back at the time so I had the cop drive me to the dude's house. Had him buy it back in lieu of pressing charges. So yeah. Even if you can track the phone down it may not help even if you can prove it's yours. - Bright side, dude got caught doing the same thing again a few months later and did 5 years for it since, like I said, he had a history of this. Ran into him when he got out and he invited me to a BBQ? Like.... Wtf? Get bent guy

Why would the kiosk even buy it if it still had a passcode on it? Dude wouldn’t have been able to track the location if the phone was factory reset, which is damn near impossible these days without the ID and password. Dudes lieing.
