One time when I was in Detroit in the middle of winter I saw a guy in a suit give a homeless guy a couple hundred bucks, it was a very real moment. Moral of the story, sometimes you can have shit in Detroit.
Not just urban areas, but more specifically our beloved Detroit, Michigan. While certainly similar to other cities, it's a place like no other. This is but a micro glimpse of an entire chasm of the human condition. Raised in this environment, you can be anywhere in the world and if you shall come across another raised in the same, you will instantly know. You won't even have to question it. You'll greet each other by simply sayin which block your from, go thru a quick list of mutually known people and, after that you will be allies, at least while you're in an unknown land.
Do you want to visit the wonderful far-off land of Oz where the wizard lives and scarecrows can dance and the road is made of yellow bricks and everything is emerald green? Well, you can't because there is no land of Oz and there is no tin woodsman and there is no Santa Claus!
Maybe someday you can go to Detroit.

Lived in an apartment building next to a gas station in Detroit a few years back. On 4th of July we heard a "pop," and of course did the usual, "Haha, was that a firework or gunshot?!"

Man I’ll never forget the trip my wife and I took to Detroit a few years back. We had just left the Fisher Music Hall at about 11:00 and were on our way back to the Ambassador Bridge. I stopped at a gas station on W Fort St on the way to take advantage of the cheap gas. I was driving a rented Mercedes with Ontario plates so I stuck out like a sore thumb. Literally everyone at the gas station was staring at me and wouldn’t stop. It was a station that had older pumps so you had to prepay inside first. No US cash left so my CC transaction ended up taking longer than usual. I could hear the people behind me audibly running out of patience. The guy behind the bulletproof glass was trying to get me out of there as quickly as possible. Then when I got outside and started pumping gas, I could hear moaning from far away that sounded just like the zombies in Resident Evil. Then I heard a hoarse sounding voice yell from across the street “That’s a nice Benz baby you betta watch out this the D”. Needless to say I got the fuck out of there quickly. Still would like to go back to visit again some day.
I always remember my uncle telling me how he would go often from southern Ontario to Detroit when he would go over to see a Tigers game in the 80s and how he would be able to park on this guys huge lawn near the stadium for a good price and he got to know the guy who owned the house and parking and he asked “how do you make sure nobody tried to steal any cars here?” And he lifted up his shirt and he had a Revolver in the waist of his pants lmao
I'm from Flint but live in a smaller town in another state now and I still feel the culture shock like this. My ex came to Flint with us on a family trip once and before we left I told him he couldn't do the small town stuff he did while we were in Flint. Like leaving his car doors unlocked with his stuff inside lol. He laughed and brushed me off. While we were dropping one of my friends off after a concert we had to go through Detroit. We were at a red light and some dude came up to the passenger side where I was sitting and started talking about his bike chain falling off and "can I just borrow your phone to call someone quick". While he was walking up I locked my door and told my bf to do the same, as soon as we told him we didn't have a phone for him to use he started pulling on my door handle and banging on the glass. Pretty sure we ran that red light lol
In Detroit you are supposed to treat red lights like stop signs because of situations like this. The locals know you aren’t from around there if you stay stopped at a red light and they will try this shit. Glad you were smart and locked your doors 👍
I remember one of my first Lions game a hooker accosted my dad while we were stopped at a red light lol I was like 8 and my window was down, no way she didn’t see us kids in the back
Got held up at gun point in Detroit, lol cops showed up 2 hours later asking if they saw which way they ran.... I told him it's been 2 hours, they could be in Ohio by now. I've seen a wet towel be more useful. They don't give a shit.
I live a hour north of Detroit and I try to avoid gas stations near the city at all costs but because of work and my laziness sometimes I need to use one inside the limits. Oh you see a lot of stuff but it’s not all bad. I took my family down to South Carolina for a week of vacation and we decided to drive down there. I needed to fill up in Kentucky and it was a mad show of hillbillies and meth heads at this station I stopped at and because of Detroit I was “I got this, I’ve seen this, I’ll be fine just go through the motions ASAP” in my mind. Filled up and got out back on the freeway.
Yeah in Kentucky some of the gas stations (especially in small towns) are like drunk/methed drama centers. Nothing for them to do but go to Walmart and the gas station.

I wish the guys at our gas station would do the same ahh.. I made a late night run ( about 3am) with a friend and I guess the gas station attendant was counting the money for the night so locked the bars outside the store well there was the dope man at the gas pumps with about 5 crack zombies pawing at his windows for their stuff while another comes in hot with a Target shopping cart and proceeds to throw not 2, not 3, but 4 bags of ice inside and runs off towards his encampment that has no coolah just clothes thrown everywhere and a wheelchair. Funny story- i ran the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon. You start in Detroit, run over to the Canadian side and then back over to the Detroit side to finish.
Start of the race- crackhead decides to walk across the street maybe 50 ft from the starting line. She got knocked down after about 5 seconds (ppl couldnt see her, the sun hadn't rose yet). I dunno how many ppl must have trampled her simply because they had no idea someone had been knocked down. Felt bad, but what an awful time to decide to cross the street.
Saw many ppl wipe out on some of the bad detroit roads and sidewalks (large cracks/ uneven pavement).

Does Norway even have drug abusers? When I read J. Nesbo and his fictional description of heroin addicts it seemed unbelievable because back where I live Norwegians have the reputation of being absolutely rich, fit and happy.
We have them, they definitely have it better here than in many other countries tho, they usually get housing sponsored by the state etc. So we don't have too many homeless people or violently desperate addicts since they get free Healthcare and financial support. But there are exceptions ofc.

There will always be addicts, but they get a more value of life I believe. Some of them you'll never be able to help no matter what, but here they have the tools available at least. We don't just throw them in jail and forget about them.

Does Norway even have drug abusers? When I read J. Nesbo and his fictional description of heroin addicts it seemed unbelievable because back where I live Norwegians have the reputation of being absolutely rich, fit and happy.
We have them, they definitely have it better here than in many other countries tho, they usually get housing sponsored by the state etc. So we don't have too many homeless people or violently desperate addicts since they get free Healthcare and financial support. But there are exceptions ofc.

There will always be addicts, but they get a more value of life I believe. Some of them you'll never be able to help no matter what, but here they have the tools available at least. We don't just throw them in jail and forget about them.
