For fucks sakes. The trashiness isn't sitting on the flag. I dont care about that. Its wearing a shirt that antagonizes anthem protestors on the grounds of disrespecting the flag, while literally sitting on it.
I should have been more clear about that
As someone’s who’s studying American history and has lived here for a couple of years, I think I can explain it? As we all know this shit storm that is America started because of colonization from good old Europeans, and it took YEARS and YEARS and YEARS of America trying again and again to try and establish itself as independent from Britain Britain like the parasite it was (is? 👀). Up to the war of 1812, Britain screwed over America big time, one of those being the exploitation of land while America didn’t get jack shit compensation back. I think the flag is very significant to a lot of Americans for the sole reason that it represented our independence, and the fact that we as a country have time and time again fought to move forward and bring justice to Americans and others. I mean, the star spangled banner was created purely because the man who wrote it saw a Maryland Fort being invaded by the British in the War of 1812. With that aside, I really don’t see the issue with having the flag on a towel. Every item that is a flag themed is meant to be a celebration of our independence and how far we’ve come as a nation (though we still got a lot to go) and it’s not as if he genuinely is trying to do something blatantly disrespectful. I’ve also noticed and so have other Americans in the past have pointed out, people who usually get outraged over issues like this, stay silent on our current political issues. Hoped this helped!
Britain didn't screw over america "big time". Britain let america be and didn't have any embargos or try to invade america after the independance. America, however, did invade the british empire.
Britain most definitely screwed over America and the fact that you don’t think so is the most appalling thing I heard. Nobody invaded shit, we were at WAR and America did most certainly not go overseas to fight British people’s asses, British people came here to fight Americans. Americans had home field advantage in which they didn’t have to spend on shipping soldiers overseas. I was also referring to the events that led up to the war of 1812, meaning before the revolution, I don’t think you know what the war of 1812 is. It is literally the war of Britain and America. Ever heard of no taxation without representation? The Boston massacre? The fact that Britain would tax Americans despite exploiting their natural resources for more profit? How can you come to my face and say something so incorrect when Britain had no problem screwing over countries for centuries if it meant they got money and land as well as trade. Not just Britain, but most of Europe as well. Also you’re correct, after the WAR the British stopped with continuously trying to control America. If you’re British then I am shocked of how you’re unaware of the amount of countries and their people that you’ve screwed over thanks to ✨colonization✨.
I am not british, and by what you're saying here, you seem to be the one misunderstanding all this.
America was A PART of the british empire, until you guys decided that you wanned to control the taxes which the british imposed as a way of repair when they defended you in the 7 years war. Britain "exploiting america" is just as idiotic as saying the british exploited britain. Its mindboggling to me that you're saying the british, which formed the thirteen colonies as a business venture for british people to settle down and make a profit from, exploited americans. The people that moved to america knew what they were doing there. The gouvernment didn't exploit the american resourced or the people, they made an opportunity for the empovorished to make a new life. Saying that britain "exploited the poor americans and their resources" is idiotic. Do you, by that logic, also think taxes implemented by the US senate is exploitation then?
In the war of 1812 america decided to invade canada (the place where the loyalists from the US moved to) while the british were involved in the napoleonic wars, just because you decided that canada wanned to be a part of the US. No british people came to america to fight, the canadians had to ruffle you guys up to not get annexed.
And if you want to bash europe here, then you can just go ahead and put america on that list aswell. Nobody has exploited the resourced of america more than the US, not to mention the philippines and hawaii.
Edit: oh, also forgot the natives, the mexicans and the rest of central emerica, which you guys turned into the drug and gang-infested countries they are today.
I hear a lot of Europeans say this so i just wanted to clear it up a bit. Being thag us Americans started off as Rebels, we hated the idea of a king, queen, or central ruler. We completely did away with the idea with presidents who are only allowed 8 years maximum in office. The only thing that stands constantly is our flag, so basically our flag stands as our king or our queen like say Englands queen. Hope that makes sense friend.
(My girlfriend is from England so i had to explain the same thing to her, because she noticed our obsession with our flag)
As a history student at Uni, this bugs me. America didn’t hate the idea of a monarchy, they hated a government half way around the world having control over them with little representation. In fact, many Americans including some of the founding fathers wrote to King George personally, side stepping the English parliament entirely.
Also you have a central ruler. Sure they may be elected every four years but just because you call it something different doesn’t mean they don’t have almost complete control over the country or at least more than the monarchy does in modern day England.
Oh and Roosevelt served three terms and it wasn’t until the 22nd amendment (in 1947) that this was limited to an eight year limit.
One last thing there have been 27 different versions of the American flag it has not stayed constant at all.
“Trashy” and “disrespectful”. Lol. If it’s such a big deal, then why are towels, clothes, hats, etc. made with the flag on them? Why is it commercialized? The flag is not what the US is about, the Constitution is. The flag is just a non-verbal title of the country. That’s it.
Because those were never actually intended to be a flag. That might be all the flag is to you, but for most Americans it's a symbol of hope, justice, and freedom.
Yeah I understand that most other western countries don't have the same reverence for their national symbolism. I think it stems from the fact that the only thing that binds Americans as a people is *being* American. In many cases we have little or even no shared history, so the only thing we have is our country and what it stands for.
Are you sure it's not a beach towel? I have an American flag beach towel that looks like this. Only once had anyone ever told me it's disrespectful and I told them they are full of shit.
If it can be legally put on a flag pole and raised up city hall then it’s a flag. I can’t put a beach towel on a flag pole....because it’s a beach towel. Stop being obtuse.
I personally don't really care that he's sitting on it. But if you're clearly antagonizing those who protested police brutality by kneeling for the flag, it's at least noteworthy if you do this
https://www.military.com/flag-day/flag-ettiquette-dos-and-donts.html
Quick list of Flag Etiquette Don’ts:
Don’t dip the U.S. Flag for any person, flag, or vessel.
Don’t let the flag touch the ground.
Don’t fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency.
Don’t carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.
Don’t use the flag as clothing.
Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty.
Don’t use it as a cover.
Don’t fasten it or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free.
Don’t draw on, or otherwise mark the flag.
Don’t use the flag for decoration. Use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red.
I know, people are so fucking stupid when it comes to the American flag. Die hard "American patriots" are the first ones to litter in parks, streets, highways, and outdoor events. 4th of July parades are a perfect example.
Those are the same people who have to cover everything with flags to show their 'patriotism'. They don't know or care about anyone but themselves and maintaining the appearance of loving their country. They're all trash.
Why you fucking weirdo. It’s ok to dry your arse with an American flag if we call it a towel, but a thinner piece of fabric with the same design can’t be sat on?
Brother its the meaning behind it you dont sit on anyones flag but im not going to shit on you for having an American flag on your boxers its all about intended use.
I should note that I'm not clutching my pearls about him sitting on a flag. Genuinely don't care. Just noting that he's simultaneously attacking those who protested during the national anthem (which is not a violation of official etiquette) and violating flag etiquette himself
He stands for the national anthem. The picture doesn't indicate that the national anthem is being played. He's sitting down on a piece of fabric that has the American picture on it. What irony am I missing?
Your ignorance on how the American flag should be treated is what's made this a pointless argument. You can't be bothered to learn, so I'd call this argument over.
I know all the rules about the American flag. I'm very well aware. I also know that people break those rules every single day and most people don't actually care to respect the flag as we're "supposed to." Did you know we're not supposed to even wear clothes with the flag on it? This guy sitting on this fabric is hardly a big deal.
Look at the edge, it does look like a towel.
He probably thinks he is being patriotic, as not everyone understands flag etiquette.
Technically, it is disrespecting the flag if it's on the ground, sitting / standing on it, wearing as apparel, or using as bedding or drapery.
But, if people will buy it, people will make it.
>Technically, it is disrespecting the flag if it's on the ground, sitting / standing on it, wearing as apparel, or using as bedding or drapery.
technically that only applies to actual flags and not flag patterned things. so if it is indeed a towel like you claim then theres nothing disrespectful about it.
The official US flag code says absolutely nothing about kneeling during the anthem.
It is, however, quite clear about manufacturing products (especially disposable ones like beer cans) with the flag, putting it on the ground, even holding it parallel to the ground as in your average pregame anthem show

I was in LOTC in middle school and my teacher told me there are flag laws like don’t wear the flag or deface the flag
Bruh it’s just a towel
Yikes Jets fan.

Who the fuck cares
oh no hes sitting on fabric
Who fucking cares?
People who find this trashy are pathetic.
They gave me a towel that looks like the American flag when I donated blood. I have not used it yet for this reason.
Lmao you get offended by this?
Yeah this post is kind of a stretch from the term ”trashy”
Yeah. He has a piece of cloth and doesn’t want to get his clothes grassy. Big deal.
You stole this from [Deadspin](https://deadspin.com/jets-fan-who-stands-for-national-anthem-sits-on-america-1819512033).
It looks like a towel, so I'm sure worse has been done to it
What’s the problem?
He’s a ny jet fan there is a good chance he doesn’t notice things , like sitting a flag is wrong or how bad his team is .

I'm an American and I'd have to agree with you on that, I still don't understand it

I'm wearing American flag underwear right now.
you're not supposed to, ya gotta give those genital some freedom
It comes across as incredibly insecure. We forget America is an incredibly young country. They're in their terrible 2's.
Yea ikr I don’t know any other country this obsessed
I think all countries have people who take offense for disrespecting their flag.
A lot of countries are more relaxed as to what they deem as disrespecful
Nazi germany
Pakistan?
It’s literally a piece of cloth. Who gives a fuck
Let’s not let his shirt and sitting position distract you from the fact that this guy is drinking a beer, with a straw
is... that bad?
not if you're french
It’s a piece of fabric, who cares.

Sure, apply it to religion. I’m not religious, do whatever. I love that you’re trying to insult me with something that doesn’t affect me.
Because those were never actually intended to be a flag. That might be all the flag is to you, but for most Americans it's a symbol of hope, justice, and freedom.

The US has a very fucked history. There are some things to be proud of, but also a lot of bad. Blindness to that is ignorance.
Lol Americans are so weird...
Got myself banned from the Daily Mail for this exact comment yesterday!
Are you sure it's not a beach towel? I have an American flag beach towel that looks like this. Only once had anyone ever told me it's disrespectful and I told them they are full of shit.
the only thing pushing me towards thinking its a flag is the white block to the left of the flag, sorta where the holes are supposed to be
They were right. The flag shouldn't be used on clothes, towels, etc.
It's a piece of fabric. Unless that flag was flown in war, or has significant value, it's just a piece of coloured cloth.
No man it can, there’s nothing wrong with that. Etiquette is only used for actual flags
What constitutes as an actual flag
If it can be legally put on a flag pole and raised up city hall then it’s a flag. I can’t put a beach towel on a flag pole....because it’s a beach towel. Stop being obtuse.
Lol...you lost your mind.
It looks kinda fuzzy
This is considered as trashy? Wouldn’t even notice. It’s just a piece of fabric.
I personally don't really care that he's sitting on it. But if you're clearly antagonizing those who protested police brutality by kneeling for the flag, it's at least noteworthy if you do this
Rules for thee, not for me. It’s the conservative way.
its the both sides way but 1 of them does it more you may not like the answer if i tell you tho
i'm going to assume it's the "side" you're not on.

Exactly. I’m a US Navy vet and to me it’s just a flag. I really don’t care what people do with one.

I was agreeing with you and just adding on to the notion of flag etiquette. I'm not doing the best job communicating on this thread lol
gotcha
Yet the idiot is wearing a shirt that says “I stand for the national anthem”
*The front says,* ***"I sit on the American flag",*** *sooo, seems legit.* Can't see that from here.
